I was just thinking that you include Jaina in your stories a lot more then the others. I, Jaina Solo and Empire Of The Hand have centered almost exclusively on her. I'm not complaining(Jaina is one of my favorite EU character), just seems odd.

I hope she follows through and puts him back together - having a nanny droid around Jaina has to be good for a few more laughs.

Made it back.

Still no new grandbaby! Waiting . . . waiting. happy

The fog and steam that rose from the gurgling swamps coated the entire world in a cloak so thick that night and day were barely distinguishable, the slightest change in tincture above being the former Jedi's only hint that the sun had sunk somewhere else for the evening.
That really sets the mood for the fic as well as evoking the landscape. happy

I guess it would be hard to cut yourself off from the Force completely having once been so strong. Especially on Dagobah.

Love the description of Wobbler - great name, too. happy Matches him perfectly.

she'd created the droid within the first month of landing on the swampy planet, piecing him together from junk and spare parts she'd found on her ship or scattered throughout the jungle, but mostly from Allana's parting gift when Jaina had informed her family that she was leaving— the little girl's beloved TD droid.
Awwww. Cute.

Actually I would say that Jaina DOES need to be pampered, so the droid is perfect.

"But I'll die," the droid replied, his giant photoreceptors seeming to well.

Jaina stared down at him, contemplating how that was true of almost everyone who got close to her.

Now there's an ouchie. wink

Poor wee Wobbler - such a life of sacrifice for droids.

Enjoyed that post a lot. happy

Could you PM me. happy The next few months are going to be busy.

corran: I was just thinking that you include Jaina in your stories a lot more then the others. I, Jaina Solo and Empire Of The Hand have centered almost exclusively on her. I'm not complaining(Jaina is one of my favorite EU character), just seems odd.

Yeah, that's true. The story in "Empire of the Hand" was mostly Jaina's share of what was going to be in "The Age of Heroes" that I decided to make as a connector fic between my NJO series and LotS because everyone seemed really disappointed when I said I wouldn't be continuing the story for a good 6 months. I filled it out a little more to make it its own story, but originally Jaina and Wrev were going to go to Chiss space to see Fel, end up finding out about Thrawn, then getting captured by the Vagaari and so on.

I think it worked out better this way any way.

It wasn't that I wanted to write another Jaina-centric story as much as she was the obvious choice to connect to the two series when you look at the other characters' arcs.

This fic is an ensemble but Jaina is the main character. I guess I just like writing her as a hero. She's definitely one of my favorites, though I probably prefer Anakin and Mara as far as my top 3 EU favorite characters. But it's more by plot circumstance than me deciding I want to write Jaina fics.

Stroja: The droid made me think of Wall-E as well

I got to see the full trailer for that this weekend when I saw Kung Fu Panda and now I really, really, really want to see it tongue Looks cute.

I hope she follows through and puts him back together - having a nanny droid around Jaina has to be good for a few more laughs.

I'd say there's a good chance we'll see Wobbler again. This story is going to be pretty dark, so it'll need him tongue

Thanks so much for reading and replying grin

GrandMasterKatarn: Aaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwww! I never get sentimental over a droid, but DON'T KILL WOBBLER! I like the little droid.

I'm glad to hear you like him so much grin Unfotunately, I think Wobbler is coming apart for now sad Hopefully Jaina will put him back together later.

Thanks for reading and replying happy

Tahi: Made it back.
Still no new grandbaby! Waiting . . . waiting.

Aww. I hope Jess is doing well hugs

That really sets the mood for the fic as well as evoking the landscape.

Thank you happy Dagobah's an easy planet to write about since we all know it so well.

I guess it would be hard to cut yourself off from the Force completely having once been so strong. Especially on Dagobah.

Yeah. Dagobah's got some creepy energies around it worried

Love the description of Wobbler - great name, too. Matches him perfectly.

Hehe, thanks. It took me awhile to decide on a name which is why he didn't appear in the dramatis right away tongue I'm glad you liked him grin

Actually I would say that Jaina DOES need to be pampered, so the droid is perfect.

She would probably never let that happen sad

Now there's an ouchie.

laugh

You're right.

Poor wee Wobbler - such a life of sacrifice for droids.

They were made to suffer sad

Enjoyed that post a lot.

Thank you! happy

Has read through, and now I can all is quiet as it is necessary to comment. The prologue has very much liked. This Jaina's dream with Caedus phantom, and all rest. Interestingly, who to it should be rescueed... Means, spots of Jacen's blood and were not erased from its neck? It is good. I certainly would write * the fratricide * that all life it was a shame to it with that that it has made... Excuse, has distracted. I wait for continuation! It is very intrigued. applause

Chapter 1:

and its face was marked by a pair of oversized, extremely expressive photoreceptors and a misshapen voice slot.

He does sound a lot like Wall-E. grin

"I've been worried sick," Wobbler said in his child-like vocoder. "I was afraid you were lost... or you'd abandoned me."

Aww... sad

Allana had given it to her aunt as she was leaving, so Jaina "Wouldn't get so lonesome."

That is so sweet. love Sounds like Jaina and her niece are bonding already.

"Don't worry so much, you'll rupture a circuit,"

Same old Jaina. Tsk, tsk... shame_on_you

"Hug?" Wobbler asked, reaching his arms up and wiggling the fingers of his oversized hands in anticipation of Jaina scooping him up— he seemed to like that.

"No thanks."

"Kiss and make it better?"

"Absolutely not."

So adorable! I love Wobbler, I want one. grin

Wobbler turned to the ground dejectedly. "What are you doing way out here?"

"I have to leave," Jaina said, severing another vine from the white-plated hull. "I'm sorry."

"You should have taken better care of your ship," the droid observed.

"Yeah, thanks for the tip."

He’s smart, too!

"Is it Jagged?"

"What?"

"You talk about him a lot," Wobbler replied.

"I mentioned him once."

LOL. Busted! I bet Jaina talks in her sleep the way her twin did. mischief

"Well, maybe it's just the way you said it."

Exceedingly smart and very perceptive, too.

"You want to remove my power core?"

"Well... yes."

"But I'll die," the droid replied, his giant photoreceptors seeming to well.

sad All of a sudden I imagined the robot from Short Circuit, “Number Five is alive! No disassemble!” cry

Jaina stared down at him, contemplating how that was true of almost everyone who got close to her.

There’s just no escape from the bitter truth for Jaina. Even alone on Dagobah with no one but a cobbled-together droid for company, the past is constantly at her heels.

"You'll put me back together?"

"As soon as I get to where I'm going, it will be the first thing I do."

I really hope she does. I’m already attached to Wobbler, I want to see more of him.

"Can I have a hug before you take me apart?"

Awww.... *huggles Wobbler to pieces* hugs

Okay, Master Yobi, is it time for more yet? Can’t wait. grin

TSF: I'll join the crowd....Wobbler is great!

Yay grin Glad you like him.

Jaina needs someone like that in her life and she should definitly put him back together.

Hopefully she will whistling

Couldn't she tie him into the ship's power and keep him "alive"?

I thought about that, Threepio has that "plug in" after all. But I imagine Wobbler has limited connectivity tongue

Thanks for reading and replying grin

Well, the blood trail disappeared after she killed Caedus, but now it's back, and a little different pattern, apparently. Or maybe it was always that way and she never noticed wink

I certainly would write * the fratricide * that all life it was a shame to it with that that it has made... Excuse, has distracted. I wait for continuation! It is very intrigued.

Yeah, it was sad.

Thanks for reading and replying grin Glad you're enjoying the fic!

Wedge: Finally got around to reading and catching up with this fic. Quite the interesting ensemble of characters in the DP.

There will be more characters added soon. Juun and Tarfang for one tongue

Oh, and after watching RotJ last night, I'm almost convinced that the "him" being refered to is Luke. Geez man, what happened to him to become so bloody minded?

I think Luke is a really interesting guess, given what happened in Invincible. What do you mean by RotJ, btw? thinking

Good, if we stayed on Dagobah any longer my skin might've turned green and my ears might've become long and pointy. Speak backwards, I might have as well.

laugh cry

Already begun for me, it has sad Into exile, I must go.

Thanks for reading and replying grin

jagsredlady: He does sound a lot like Wall-E.

Hehe. I saw "The Happening" instead last night... it was not good tongue

That is so sweet. Sounds like Jaina and her niece are bonding already.

We'll be seeing "Amelia" in a little while.

Same old Jaina. Tsk, tsk...

You didn't expect her to get all mushy, did you? wink

So adorable! I love Wobbler, I want one.

I'll buy you one as soon as they're available wink

I'm glad you like him so much hugs

He’s smart, too!

lol!

LOL. Busted! I bet Jaina talks in her sleep the way her twin did.

I had the exact same thought when writing this laugh

Exceedingly smart and very perceptive, too.

wink

All of a sudden I imagined the robot from Short Circuit, “Number Five is alive! No disassemble!”

OMG, I thought of having him say "No disassemble"! shock shock shock

There’s just no escape from the bitter truth for Jaina. Even alone on Dagobah with no one but a cobbled-together droid for company, the past is constantly at her heels.

Yeah. She's isolated herself and nothing has really changed sad

I really hope she does. I’m already attached to Wobbler, I want to see more of him.

There are good odds that you will batting

Awww.... *huggles Wobbler to pieces*

laugh

You're the only one who knows if Jaina hugged him or not. I clipped the answer off when I posted it cause I thought it made a better ending not knowing silly

Okay, Master Yobi, is it time for more yet? Can’t wait.

Yeah, I hope you liked this one too wink

Thanks so much for reading and replying grin And the beta work hugs

Chapter 2: Lost in the Mists

The office was nowhere near as large or extravagant as Jaina had somehow expected it to be when the door slid away with a pneumatic hiss, revealing instead an austere chamber of whites and gray. It was clean— obnoxiously tidy, really— and it was grim, and cold. There were no holographs or paintings secured to the alabplast panels, no plush rugs unfurled across the gleaming gunmetal plates of durasteel flooring— nothing soft, or warm, or personal of any kind.

A convex back wall of transparisteel did give way to a breathtaking view of Bastion's night sky, with its great towers and massive ferrocrete superstructures stretching into the coal-black clouds that glimmered with starlight, while a lattice of knotted air traffic streamed across the city's face in flashes of golden headlamps. It might have been a smaller version of Coruscant, had the traffic not consisted of the heavy-handed patrols of TIE fighters and some of the edifices not been crowned by rings of weapons emplacements.

Under the circumstances, the former Jedi supposed she should have been glad it was a single humorless woman in gray officer's khakis escorting her inside, instead of being nudged over the threshold by a platoon of cold-blooded stormtroopers.

The man behind the obsidian desk was already rising, fastening an extra button on the sharp black jacket of his uniform with a gentleman's grace. He appeared several kilos lighter than the last time Jaina had seen him, his arms thinner and shoulders narrower in the fitted coat, while his features were drawn, shadows cast by his cheek bones seeming darker on sunken, pale skin before hiding beneath a full beard. Still, there was no denying the former pilot's dashing aura or the gleam in his jade eyes, and Jaina noticed that the black hair tucked beneath the angled Imperial cap on his head was a few centimeters longer than Remnant standards.

"Grand Moff Fel," her escort announced. "Jaina Solo is here to see you."

There was a slight moment of hesitation in his movements as he stepped around the desk that Jaina was certain his aide did not notice, as if he couldn't decide whether to hug her, shake her hand, or wave goodbye. He settled for a crisp bow, straightening while the female officer turned and retreated from the office without being asked, the whirring door gliding closed behind her sealing the two of them alone inside.

"Hello, Jag."

A long and uncomfortable silence followed, with both simply studying the other's face, too distracted for their minds to even search for words.

Finally, Jag nodded. "I hope that planetary security wasn't too burdensome when you arrived. I tried to rush you through as soon as word reached me, but we have very strict procedures regarding the appearance of unknown space craft in this system."

"They searched me and my ship, nothing I didn't expect," Jaina replied. "Nothing too intrusive."

"I was... a bit surprised when they notified me that you were here asking for a meeting. I'm not sure I really believed it was you until you walked in... It's good to see you."

This time it was Jaina who nodded. "Yeah."

"It's been a long time."

"I know."

Jag looked as though he wanted to ask her where she'd been, but he resisted, instead gesturing to one of the two plastoid chairs in front of his desk. "You may sit, if you'd like."

"No thanks... been crammed in a ship for days."

"A lot has changed since you left... Have you been keeping up with the HoloNet? About Daala and your uncle?"

"Not exactly," Jaina replied. "But I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to catch up on that later."

Jag seemed to accept this for a moment as another silence hung lifelessly in the tiny space between them.

"So," the young leader of the Imperial Remnant began, "Why have you come? I have a feeling it wasn't just to see me."

"It's Zekk."

"Oh..."

Jag's gaze averted hers with a few rapid blinks, before he began to pace around his desk.

"I'm looking for him," Jaina explained.

She'd spent the last six days flying around the Maad System in the Transitory Mists, searching with the Force for some trace of her lost Jedi partner. It was beyond Jaina why her brother would want to alert her of Zekk's survival, but he was the only person Jaina could think of that needed saving, and Zekk had disappeared in the final raid on Jacen's flagship. She was surprised to only feel a few faint tendrils of Caedus's death tangled in the mists where she and her brother had fought aboard the Anakin Solo, and nothing of Zekk at all.

"Zekk... Zekk's gone, Jaina," Jag replied, absently brushing his forehead.

"I think he needs my help."

"It's been two years. Even if he survived the battle—"

"I asked you to find him. I was hoping you'd looked."

"I did look," Jag said, sitting down behind his desk. "I diverted an entire flotilla to it for seven months. I was hoping to at least find his body for you... We searched every inch of the Maad System and exhausted all possible resources."

"Did you find anything? Any evidence of his death or survival?"

"Just some StealthX wreckage— nothing we could ever pin down as belonging to his fighter. And no trace that his beacon was ever activated."

Jaina knew that something like an EV beacon in the Transitory Mists was potentially useless, as the amount of energy in the region disrupted most communications.

"You're sure? Nothing?"

It had to be Zekk. There was no one else...

Jag was busy tapping keys on the foldout data screen in his desk.

"I'm sorry, Jaina. I had the best search teams in the Remnant scouring the battle zone and beyond."

He slipped a datacard into the inlaid terminal before pulling it out a moment later and offering it to Jaina.

"What's this?" She asked.

"A record of the search and everything we found. All of the records we have on Zekk's disappearance."

Jaina reached for the card but as her fingers were about to brush it Jag swung it just out of her grasp and grabbed her wrist with his free hand.

"What's going on, Jaina?"

She stared at him, her brow furrowing in agitation. "I told you—"

"I haven't heard from you in two years— no one has as far as I can tell. Now you suddenly show up here concerned about Zekk? What happened?"

"Nothing."

"Did you feel something? See something?"

Jaina wrenched her hand out of Jag's grip and snatched the datacard from him. "Thanks for your help, Jag," she said, before turning to leave.

"Wait!" Jag called after her, hopping out of his seat. "If you're going back out to the Mists, you better take one of our ships. I saw that bucket you flew in here on the security screens. That can't be safe."

"I'll get by," she assured. "It's worked so far."

"At least stay here for a night and get some rest. I can arrange for quarters—"

"No, I—"

"Why won't you let me help you?"

If Jaina Solo was even aware it was because she was afraid, she would certainly never admit it.

"I need to get going."

Jag nodded. "Of course, you've been here for ten minutes. Time to run away again," he said dryly.

Jaina was surprised by how sharp his tone was and how much it stung. She knew that there was a lot of hurt there, the way she'd left things...

"I'm sorry... I wouldn't have come if it wasn't important."

"I know."

That hadn't come out right. Jaina thought about qualifying it, but she knew she would only make things worse.

She palmed the toggle controls for the door and it hissed open.

"Goodbye, Jag."

"Good luck, Jaina," he replied, as she stepped out into the corridor. Above the drum of her boots on the durasteel, she heard him murmur, "May the Force be with you."

Jagged Fel sat on the corner of his desk for a full two minutes after Jaina left, absently stroking his beard. He was certain two minutes had passed— he'd been counting as he went over the encounter.

He reached down and plucked the comlink from his belt rather than using his desk's intercom and dialed it to a secure, and secret channel, before raising the device to his lips.

"Cem?"

There was a slight pause before a female voice laced with static crackled over the comm.

"Yes, sir?"

"Jaina Solo is on her way back to her shuttle. She'll be leaving the system shortly."

"You want me to put a tracer on her ship? That Cygnus scrap heap?"

"Place several on, but she'll find them," Jag replied. "I want you to follow her, make sure she gets where she needs to go if she has any mechanical difficulties."

"And when she gets there?"

Jag drew the small white cylinder from his mouth for a moment, before raising it back to his lips.

"Keep following her. I want to know what she's up to."
