Everything You Touch

Genre: Drama, Supernatural
Rating: PG
Time Frame: “Invincible” - beware of LOTF SPOILERS!
Characters: Zekk, Mara

Summary: Everything you touch turns to ash and gold. Post death, afterlife speculation.

Notes: Okay, I really think that Zekk survived Invincible, but I've been wrong before. This is a little whatif, and you can all breathe easy – this is not a crack!ship. This is an experiment on many differnt levels - I'm playing around with a different tense, and a different look on the after life. So, it's a little different, but I think that it fits the tone I was going for. With that said, enjoy the story. happy

Everything You Touch
by Mira-Jade

You remember floating.

Falling.

But never landing.

Death is chilled, awkward – but not unpleasant. With your last breath you try to rein in your power; your presence. As is every thought, this last thought is for her, and you hope that she will not feel the pain of your passing.

You refuse one last brush of minds, and then there is only cold.

Death is not entirely unbecoming, you think.

O

You remember drifting.

Floating.

But never touching.

Death is not whole. The force is not corporeal – it is luminous, the opposite of the crude material body you have spent your life in. There is blue – blue everywhere. From unending cerulean skies, and knee length powder blue grass. Sapphire swirls around you in mists, forming scenes and images you think best left forgotten.

The world between worlds is cold.

And that is where you meet her.

O

You remember her.

Flash and flame. Tempest and teacher. Mother and wife.

But never like this.

She's one with the mists, a memory come to life. Long silver streaked licks of flame curl down her back, now colored in shades of shadowy blue. Her body is young – much younger than you remember, hidden under soft folds of Jedi robes. Her eyes when she looks at you, are the same – blazing emerald in a sea of foam blue. The ancient glow loitering there makes you stop and stare more than anything else.

She smiles when she whispers, “Welcome.”

You watch her for a moment, for time has no meaning here. Minutes are hours and seconds are days. You are merely here. And so is she.

Mara Jade Skywalker walks towards you, the mists parting at her silent command. When she reaches you there is pain and empathy in her eyes – she knows what it is like to leave behind what you're not yet ready to relinquish.

“There is no one else to meet you,” she explains, and you nod. Father was never like you, you remember, and mother had left long before. You think of fallen comrades who could have welcomed you into the land of the dead, but none of them seem as fitting as her.

You reach out and take her hand, and the world fades to white.

O

You remember belonging.

Sepia and white, flame against eternal night.

And her. Always her.

You spend most of your time observing the land of the living. There are wide glassy pools amongst the blue shrouded world, windows to the world you've left behind. There is peace and wholeness here, but there is also a wistful air of longing amongst those who were taken while leaving others behind – the force cannot completely sooth away that. You find yourself sharing the same pool with Mara more often than not - taking turns between observing her son and your lovely friend.

Around you spirits shift. You have already met Grandmother Skywalker – a small woman with Jaina's eyes and Leia's political fortitude. Anakin is different without the shroud of black that he was renowned for. Here you only know him as a shrewd sabacc player with a sharp tongue – more than once you wonder how much of Jaina's skill was her Grandfather's doing rather than her father's. Anakin Solo was a pleasant surprise, though you know he shouldn't be. Others like Lusa and Raynar were harder to meet, harder to remember.

You have finally been declared dead, struck down in the line of duty. You watch her mourn your death – after all, she has clung to her hope longer than most as she had not felt your passing, and you are warmed in this cold world.

Mara watches with a sad glow in her eyes, and you remember the raw pain that still clouds the Grand Master's aura. When she speaks she's slow and careful, and you know it is not for your sake as much as hers. “It's hard, watching their grief,” she tells you, somehow that makes it okay.

“Yes.” Your voice is low and wispy, and you are not yet used to a ghost's whisper.

“It's easier when they have others to turn too,” she continued, and drew her knees up under her chin – a move that reminds you of Jaina so much it hurts.

You watch Jag come in and wrap his arms around her, and that doesn't hurt as much as you though it would. You tell yourself you are thankful, glad she has him to turn too. Even so you wish to be there to dry her tears.

You are grateful for the pain that death takes away.

O

You remember less as time goes by.

Ashes and ember, and you wish for flame.

Mara tells you that ones who were not ready to let go can revisit as ghosts. The force will allow you to touch the plane of the living, if only for a short period of time, and you wonder when will be a perfect moment. Mara goes less and less often, one day – or was it night? - she tells you that she only has a few visits left. The force's lent power is limited, and soon she will have to let go completely.

This scares her. Not even death's peace can calm that.

“I don't know what he'll do without me,” she tells you quietly, and you know that she worries what will happen to herself when she lets go. You don't want to think that far ahead, and neither does she.

Silence passes, the silvery foam of the viewing pool shifts from Luke and Ben and a small girl with onyx hair. You find yourself smiling, “Jysella?” you ask.

Mara nods, she frowns. “He's much too young.” She whispers, a mother's ire creeping into her voice. With a pang you think of all the moments she'll miss. You refuse to think about the ones you may have had. She was never your future, even before death's interference.

“Fifteen isn't so bad,” you say, wishing to see the fire invade her eyes once again.

As predicted she scoffs. “Fifteen is good for friends, but they never stay 'just friends', don't they?”

You feel a pang at her words, you hope you hide it well. She falls silent too, and you know she's regretting her words. “I'm sorry,” she whispers, and that is wrong. It is something you never wish to hear from Mara Jade.

So you shrug, letting the regret wash over you like water – that is something that you are becoming better and better at. “Don't be,” you assure her, and wonder whom you are trying to convince. “I wouldn't trade our friendship for anything.” Except her love.

Mara nods, unconvinced, but her eyes are back on her son, and soon her mother's gaze see little else. Out of the corner of the vision you see Jaina, and she's hand in hand with a man wearing Imperial white. You watch as Jagged Fel takes her hand, fingering a Corellian Heartstone on her ring finger. All at once you feel your wisps of emotion plummet as joy and pain war for supremacy inside you.

She's happy, so so happy – you can see that so easily in the glow in her cinnamon eyes.

You wonder if it would be right to see her now, wondering if you have any right to bring back old griefs. The force knows that she has suffered so much, and you are hesitant to grant yourself relief. Mara says the force will keep you here in limbo until you're ready – until you're ready to move on, or you wait for her to join you.

Soon you know you can share eternity with her.

The thought warms a body that can no longer feel heat.

O

You remember being anchored to something solid.

Real and whole and together.

You miss her more than you will ever admit.

You rarely leave the viewing pool, and your glowing blue body has waxed and wanned until you are flickering dangerously in the breeze. Mara watches you with barely disguised concern, and you find that soon you hardly even see her.

She's encouraging you to see Jaina – you can, you should. It would put both of you at peace, she says, but you don't. You've lived for her, and now you're serving her in death. You will not bring back even the slightest twinge of pain to her. And she's happy – married and just starting to swell with child. Anakin – the elder Anakin - was sure that it was going to be a boy. Younger Anakin said that they would name him Jacen.

You disagree, for even here Jacen is not welcome. Redemption never suited him, you think, not while his twin's hands had to be coated in his blood for his reign to end.

Mara says nothing when her killer's name is mentioned, but you can see the anger that clouds her crystal eyes. You hope that Jaina doesn't burden her child with that name.

Mara doesn't even try turning the scene to her husband and child. Instead she watches Jaina shop for baby clothes with a beaming Leia, little Amelia in tow. Latter you laugh a little too much at Han's barbed insults that struck Jag with a practiced ease.

Does she even miss you?

That question haunts and hurts more than anything, and you find that you don't want to know the answer.

O

You remember living.

That is something death doesn't ever claim, and you wish it does.

Mara is growing annoyed with you, she passes the mists by your post at the viewing pool. with soft steps, echoing in the carnivorous land. They sound loudly in your ears, even though she's silent as she walks. “You're going to Fade,” she warns. “The force will not wait for you.”

“I don't want it too.”

“Kriff it all Zekk, don't you think that this could be good for her too?!”

“I will not hurt her that way,” you whisper.

“You know what I think?” Mara fairly growls. She squats down next to you, her emerald eyes flashing and so close to your own. “I think you're scared.”

“Of what?” You are hardly paying her any attention. Jaina is in labor in the land of the living, and you feel her pain as if it is your own.

Mara reaches out and slices her hand through the viewing pool, distorting the image until you are forced to look at her. There is a fury inside that you have not felt since before dying. “I am not scared.” Your voice trembles.

“Yes you are! She misses you, she hides it, she moves on, she lives - but don't ever doubt that she mourns you!”

Your hands are trembling, hope and anger cloud your vision. “What do you know? You were loved in return, you never once had to doubt that Luke would welcome you back!”

Her eyes soften, she reaches out ghostly hands to cup your face, and her gaze is entreating, tender. “And my time with him is at a close. I will not see another waste what some yearn for so violently.”

You're shaking. Fear rises, choking you even thought you can't breath. Mara's hand shifts on your face, and then her wavering arms are drawing you close. You give way to tears that you can no longer shed, and she catches them with her thumb. Understanding swirls in her eyes, and you find yourself following them down, wishing to see the bottom.

“Never doubt a person's capacity to love,” she whispered, drawing away. “You'll just kill yourself all over again.”

This you know, at least. Even as you contemplate the idea you can see yourself darkening from wispy white to electric blue. The force is feeding you, urging you on, and you find yourself suddenly yearning like you never have before. Just once . . . One look, one touch.

Just one more good-bye.

Mara smiles, the same triumphant look that had coated her face after a won duel back during the Yavin days. She leaned forward, kissed you forehead tenderly – like a mother would, and then your world fades to white again.

O

You remember life.

Light and air and color and sound.

And her.

Night has descend over the Imperial capitol and the royal suite was lit only by soft green lights. You welcome the color as you glide through the corridors, suddenly so sick of jeweled blue. You know the way to her instinctively, and with thoughts of her you suddenly appear in her rooms.

The room is black, and the twin moons outside send in slivers of light through the ribbed blinds. Her husband is gone, seeing to matters of state before retiring for the night, and you are thankful. For a moment you are rooted to the spot, unable to do anything but stare. Her face is relaxed and peaceful, a glow has invaded her skin from the exertion of birth, and you think she has never been more beautiful – with her chocolate hair falling in messy ringlets around her ivory skin, and her small hands clutching the coverlet in a childish grip.

You feel yourself moving forward before you register that you even moved. The back of your hand reaches out to touch her cheek. Just one touch, you tell yourself. Just one touch and you'll be gone. Just one . . .

Then her eyes flicker open, and your worlds collide again.

At first her eyes only blink sleepily. She obviously thinks she's still caught in the land of dreams, for she's smiling, as if you're an old visitor in her thoughts. The thought gives you courage, and you finally touch her face. The contact makes her shiver, and you feel nothing in your ghostly body.

That seems to break the spell, for she's shaking the sleep from her eyes as she sits up. “Zekk?” She mutters, bewildered. Tears invade her large eyes, and you are regretting coming upon seeing her peaceful face etched in grief again. Everything you touch turns to ash and gold, you think, and you are not yet ready to see her blow away.

You do the only thing you can think to do, and turn to leave. Regret churning inside of you until you are flickering in your temporary body. She gets out of bed as quickly as she could on her still quavering legs, and her hand clasps around your wrist, passing right through. She looks a little shocked, and you are confused as well, wondering what you should do. “Wait! Don't go!”

The desperation in her voice makes you stay. You have never been able to deny her anything. There are tears falling down her cheeks – little diamonds that you trace with your eyes. “I'm sorry.” You say, guilt and grief making your voice heavy.

She looks surprised, “For what?”

You come forward, and raise a ghostly hand to finger her tears. They are still there when your hand falls away. “You're in pain again,” you explain simply.

“What?” She reached up and wiped them away on her own, her eyes brightening. “Please don't be sorry, Zekk. I . . . I've missed you so much. Please, please don't regret you've came.”

You don't know what to say to this – and you're quiet. Once again the dirty street urchin trying to find the right words to the angel from above.

“What happened?” She asked, needing to know.

You shrug. “My ship was hit. I died.” Such a simple end. It sounded like an inadequate explanation.

“I didn't feel you . . . go. I felt Mara, Anakin, Jacen. But not you. I think . . . I think I always hoped that somehow.” She shook her head, shaking away her thoughts. “Well, I was wrong.”

This you could explain, “I didn't want you to feel it. I wanted to spare you even the smallest pain.”

She was smiling, brilliant and beautiful - every inch the woman you love. “Thank-you.” She said simply, and you can hear every loaded sentiment behind those two words.

And that is enough.

“There's someone I want you to meet,” she tells you. Reaching out, she took the hand she couldn't grasp, and you let her lead you. The mischief in her eyes was a flash back to their days on Yavin, and you clutch to those happy memories as she clutches to you.

She draws you around the bed to a small cradle, and suddenly you stop, not wanting to go any further. If she notices your hesitance, she says nothing. Instead she reaches inside and picks up the newly born babe. The child is still sleeping, and only awoke enough to turn and snuggle into it's mother's warmth. When she turns to face you again she's smiling so brilliantly – proudly, like she was upon making Rogue.

You find yourself smiling too. Curiosity moves you to come forward, reaching out to finger the deep chocolate fuzz just starting to cover the baby's overly pink skin. When the child's eyes flickered, you catch a glimpse of glowing green, and you smile at seeing a perfect medley of the parents. “He's beautiful,” you whisper, and know that somewhere Anakin was collecting a bet from Mara.

“I know,” she said, awe coating her voice. You smile at it, the guilt and pain falling off of you in waves. She looks up to you with a questioning look in her deep eyes, and you urge her to speak.

“What is it?”

“I,” she started, looking around before meeting his eyes. “We, Jag and I, named him Zekk.”

Your world stops, and you are aware of nothing past the pounding in your ears. You are touched, so deeply touched, and trying so hard not to show it. She's smiling, and you know that had this been before, you would be crying. But it is too late for tears, so you wrap your arms around mother and child, holding them both. You can feel Jaina's tears, and the sleeping child's warm breath against your flickering skin, and you think you know what peace is in that moment.

When you can feel the force telling you it is time, you pull away. This time when you reach out to dry her tears, they come away on your hand. She reaches out one last time to cradle your face, and you leave a kiss on the inside of her palm. Tears have stopped falling, and you finally whisper, “I love you Jaina, I'm sorry I've never told you before.”

“I know,” she whispered, and she must have seen something in your gaze, for she stepped back. “Thank-you for coming.”

You nod, and turn to go. If you don't now, you know you never will. Your steps are light and heavy at the same time. Joy and grief wagging a war in your head.

And then her voice stops you. “Zekk,” she whispered. “I love you.”

The joy won out, and as you fade away you hold onto the look in her eyes as she watches you leave. When you rejoin the force again, you pause, unable to move as emotion overwhelms you. You kneel down to the viewing pool, awe still in your eyes as you watch Jaina tuck her child in. Latter Jag returned to his wife and child, and Jaina whispered to him with animated hands, her eyes sparkling wildly.

His wife's joy was contagious, and as he paused to wipe her tears his eyes searched the room, as if looking for a ghost. For a moment Jag's eyes lock with you, and he mouths 'thank-you.'

You smile, even though you know he will never see. You think that somehow Jag knows, and when he pulls Jaina close, you can almost imagine that you are there instead.

The viewing pool turns back to silver, and you rise, turning to the woman who remained silent behind you. Her eyes were glowing brightly, pride and joy reflecting off of eternity. You wonder then how much of Ben she sees in you, and you have no urge to answer the question as she comes up and takes your hand.

Then you are falling again, but you know that that isn't so bad.

Death has much to take, and much to teach in return.

And you have an eternity to learn.

Your writing makes me cry sometimes, but this one....made me cry a lot. I think you need to know, I don't cry easily. This was a beautiful glimpse of the after life. Have you ever read: What dreams may come or CS Lewis, The Last Battle? Both make the afterlife very desirable, and your story...it's right up there with them.

“There's someone I want you to meet,” she tells you. Reaching out, she took the hand she couldn't grasp, and you let her lead you. The mischief in her eyes was a flash back to their days on Yavin, and you clutch to those happy memories as she clutches to you.

Your world stops, and you are aware of nothing past the pounding in your ears. You are touched, so deeply touched, and trying so hard not to show it.

Thank you! A much more fitting name for a noble knight!

Then you are falling again, but you know that that isn't so bad.

Death has much to take, and much to teach in return.

And you have an eternity to learn.

There it is. That peacefulness. I love that Mara was the guide, but that the two Anakins were also present.

This was wonderful, applause but I still hold hope Zekk is alive! worried

I love your take on the afterlife - that the deceased can see what's going on. Your portrayal of Zekk's love for Jaina was wonderful (but so sad cry ).

That was absolutely beautiful. applause

Oh my gawd.

I choose my words carefully in this review, for to say too much would ruin the sheer beauty of this fic... this was amazing. Not only heartwrenching and chilling, but also brilliantly unique and creative. There are so many takes on the afterlife, both real books and fanfic, and each one seems to follow a pattern, all the same. This was like being shown a whole new color in the spectrum-- unexplainable yet breathtaking.

Zekk and Mara I never saw as friends, though throughout the course of this fic I sense them getting closer, and now I'm tempted to look back at profic and find a connection between them. They aren't all that different in some respects.

I'm with iamobiwan on this, I was teary-eyed at the end of this. I haven't had a good fic bring me to tears in awhile.

Dangit, I wish you never had to go to school if this is the type of stuff we get from you when you're free tongue Excellent, this was pure awesome applause applause

oh....that was so pretty. a little sad that Jacen didn't get redemption in this. I guess it's how the reader interpets Invincible's ending. Awesome job though.

Wow, the comments I've gotten for this story have floored me. Thank-you so much you guys for your warm encouragement! hugs

Jedi-Ant : I'm waiting. happy peace

iamobiwan1970 : that has to be one of the most wonderful comments I have ever recieved for one of my stories, thank-you very much! hugs I have not read those works, but I will definitely put it on my 'to read' list. happy And yes, I hope that Zekk is alive too. praying

path-seeker : Thank-you! The portrayal was a little different, but it seem to fit. love

Myriad_Daydreams : Wow, thank you so much. You have no idea how much your words mean to me. blush hugs I agree that Zekk and Mara are alike in many ways, which is what really inspired this. I'm glad that you enjoyed the slightly . . . different take on the after life. Thanks again, so much! happy

JediMasterJessica : I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think 'Invincible' may have redeemed Jacen, slightly. But nothing on Vader's level, and I hate his character. So I took a few liberties. wink Thanks for reading! happy

Jade_pilot : Thanks! grin

Irish_Jedi_Jade : Wow, again, thanks for the kind words! I wish that J/J/Z would end like this, so that was somewhat of a secondary goal for me. I'm glad that you enjoyed this! grin grin

carr3107 : Thanks! grin

Oops. blush I slotted my place and then neglected to post a proper reply. Time to rectify that..

“I didn't feel you . . . go. I felt Mara, Anakin, Jacen. But not you. I think . . . I think I always hoped that somehow.” She shook her head, shaking away her thoughts. “Well, I was wrong.”

This you could explain, “I didn't want you to feel it. I wanted to spare you even the smallest pain.”

love love

Aww... *melts* This is when I just love Zekk and J/Z. So beautiful!! *grabs for a tissue*

Then you are falling again, but you know that that isn't so bad.

Death has much to take, and much to teach in return.

And you have an eternity to learn.

Wow... what a perfect ending!! grin applause applause

I jumped on this one because I'd not long read your other masterpiece, Burning Bright, and I must say, your brilliance simply astounds me! love This was perfect in so many ways -- having Mara guide Zekk was wonderful, and the way he seemed to float through the phases -- love *sighs*

I've not been a Zekk fan for very long, and I was shocked at the direction his character took, but if he has to be dead like it seems, then I hope this is what happened.

A very emotional, beautiful vig. rose I'm so happy to have read it. happy

My first thought was, "Zekk and Mara - that's kind of strange, but intriguing." Having read the story, it's my last thought, too. Which sounds weird, but coming from me, it's a definite compliment. I love strange but intriguing stories. grin

Second person is always an interesting choice, and usually very hard to pull off, but it works fantastically here. In fact, I didn't even consciously notice that it was second person until I'd finished the story. I'm not sure that's ever happened to me before with this POV. It feels perfectly natural. grin

Mara and Zekk's characterization also feels perfectly natural, both individually and together. Offhand, I can't recall any direct interaction those two had in profic; surely there was some, but I suspect it was brief. Yet here it sounds just as I'd imagine it to be, both as the individual personalities they are, and with a recognition of the age and rank that separates them. Mara treats Zekk with respect and as an adult, but she has no problems scolding him, either; for his part, however familiar their interaction is, Zekk always seems to maintain a measure of respect for her as Master Skywalker. Not to mention that they each react just the way I'd imagine they would to the experience of being one with the Force. It really rings true on all levels.

When she turns to face you again she's smiling so brilliantly – proudly, like she was upon making Rogue.

I love this line, because it is so characteristic of Jaina. grin

“He's beautiful,” you whisper, and know that somewhere Anakin was collecting a bet from Mara.

That amuses me tremendously. tongue

“I,” she started, looking around before meeting his eyes. “We, Jag and I, named him Zekk.”

I never saw that coming, yet it feels exactly right. I could definitely see Jaina and Jag doing so.

Then you are falling again, but you know that that isn't so bad.

Death has much to take, and much to teach in return.

And you have an eternity to learn.

Great way to close this, bittersweet and atmospheric and just right. Really beautiful work with this story. grin

That so so nice! I had to blink back some tears at this. I really loved the Zekk and Mara moments the most and it was touching that they named their child after him. Overall, excellent job here!

I will admit, I actually shed a few tears here. You wrote the scenes between them beautifully. applause

That part just finished me off. I love that there's no animosity here.

Wonderful work! happy
