Prologue

Luke stared out the window of the dropship. What he saw was chaos. His soldiers were being massacered by turbolaser fire, and his navy was in a deadlock. Since his promotion to General, he had been assigned increasingly dangerous missions, the most recent of which was hunting down rouge Admiral Lance Kraiden. Kraiden had been terrorizing the mid-rim territories for months now, so the New Republic sent in their best.

Luke’s fleet had nearly cornered the Admiral at Concord Dawn, decimating a majority of his fleet and capturing the planetary ion-cannon he had built there, though he still managed to escape. Luke’s forces then perused him half-way across the galaxy to a planet called New Holstice. The Ex-Imperial Admiral intended to make his last stand, and he had dug his forces deep.

The battle had been raging for three weeks strait now, and Luke was tired of it. Him, Lando, who had decided to jump back into his general’s outfit, and New Republic agent Kyle Katarn had cooked up a plan to take Kraiden in his own base.

Luke was so deep into his thoughts, he almost didn’t hear Lando. “Luke?” He shouted again. “Luke!” Snapped out of his train of thought, Luke turned his attention to Lando. “What?” Lando rolled his eyes. “We’re landing in two minutes, and you’re just sitting there looking out the window. Do you have all your gear ready?” Just then, Kyle strutted over to the two.

“Calm down, Lando. It’s not like he forgot his lightsaber or anything.”Just to make sure he didn’t, Luke put his hand to his belt. Feeling the cylindrical weapon, Luke gave out a deep sigh. Just then, the Pilot’s came in over the dropship’s comm. system. “All right, this is as close to your target as I can get you! Good luck, and may the force be with you!”

--

As Luke and the strike team piled out of their transport, the familiar sounds of war filled his ears. In the far-off distance, he could hear explosions and screams, and above him, he could see X-wings and TIE fighters twisting and turning, fighting for supremacy, their laser cannons blazing the whole time.

As the team approached a sewer, their one ticket into the imperial stronghold, Kyle pulled out several charges that he then began to prime. As the team crouched by their soon-to-be entrance, Kyle placed the bombs on the sewer gate. “We’re live in three!” he announced, jumping out of the way to avoid the explosion.

As the team moved through the wet and musty sewers, Kyle started reminiscing about one of his earlier missions. “… I was supposed to capture some Imperial scientist, but the guy decided to build his lab in the Nar Shaddaa sewers. The things I saw in there…” Lando made a snear. “Sounds like a vacation…”

He stopped when his sensor on his hip chirped, alerting them that they had reached their destination. Grabbing the seal above him, Lando pushed slid the plate over, making an entrance. Sticking his head out of the hole, Lando was perplexed. “Kyle, is this the right spot? It looks like we’re coming out into a ‘freasher.” Kyle itched the back of his head. “Well, yeah, it was the closest spot to the sewer system I could find…”

Lando rolled his eyes. “Jeez, I would have at least put us in the Ladies room.”Luke laughed as he climbed out of the sewers. “I think you’d be hard pressed to find a Women’s room in an Imperial base.” Reaching into his suit pocket, Luke pulled out a holo-schematic of the base.

“Okay, here’s the plan. Lando, Kyle, and I are going to try to find our way into the Admiral’s command room. Captain Kora, you’ll take your men and take out the main power generator so our forces can finally get through all those turbolasers!” Luke then pulled out an Imperial Officer’s hat from his suit. “We’ll also need to change into our disguises. There’s no way we’ll be able to sneak through here.” As everyone changed into their Imperial uniforms, Luke couldn’t help but feel… Worried.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

--

While Luke, Lando, and Kyle hadn’t run into any stormtroopers in the corridors of the massive base yet, Luke was on his toes. Relax, Luke thought. This is just like that time on the Deathstar. They have no reason to stop you, and if they say anything, just keep moving. Noticing the lack of personnel also, Kyle loosened his grip on his holster. “You know, Kraidan probably sent everyone he could against our forces. There might not be anyone still in the base.”

“Still, I don’t like this. It could be a trap, and we’re walking right into it.” Lando warned. Luke tensed up. “Why would they be seting a trap?” He asked. “They don’t even know we’re here.” Rounding the corner, Luke noticed the elevator. “Well, there it is.” Kyle said, walking over to the elevator, pushed the call button.

Nothing.

“They always lock the door.” Kyle mumbled. “You’d think they’d have learned by now… Doesn’t look like there’s a key–that would be too easy. The console to unlock the door is probably hidden in some room twelve floors up or something… how does that make any sense?” He asked himself, prying open the control consol for the lift. “Hey, Kyle,” Luke said, “You should better hurry up. I think I heard some footstep-” He was interrupted by the roar of blaster fire coming at them from down the hall.

Ducking behind a corner, Luke proceeded to fire back at the encroaching stormtroopers. “How’s that lift coming, Kyle?!” Lando yelled, narrowly avoiding several laser shots. “Almost… Got it… Done! Let’s go!” Kyle yelled, diving into the now open turbo lift. Following in quick step, Lando and Luke rushed in, avoiding the Stormtroopers unusually accurate shots. As the lift ascended, Luke tried to gather himself.

“How did they know it was us?” He panted. Lando stroked his chin. “Well, like I said, it’s a trap.” He answered. “Did you see those Stormtroopers? The Empire must be seriously bumping up their salaries, cause I’d say the life of the average man-in-white just went up a little.”

While Luke continued to ponder how the Imperials could have known who they were, he got a chirp on his comm. unit. “General,” Kora’s voice came out, “We’ve successfully shut down the turbolaser defense grid, and are awaiting your orders.” This was good news. This means the ground forces actually have a chance, Luke thought. “Very good, Captain. Alert the ground forces that they can finally move in on the fortress.”

“Yes, General.” With that, the comm. chirped off. Hearing a ding, Luke turned around. “Well,” Kyle said, “Looks like we’re here.”

--

Admiral Grast Kraiden was angry. After being chased half-way across the galaxy, being put under siege in his own fortress, and having most of his remaining forces incinerated, thing weren’t looking good. And now the guns don’t work… He thought, putting his hand to his face. His dreams of creating an Empire, a perfect Empire, free of corruption and built to his own specifications, had nearly vanished from the back of his mind.

Well, he thought, At least I’ll go in a blaze of glory, like in all those old stories Grandpa used to tell me. Just then, he heard a ding, the sliding of durasteel doors, and a familiar voice. “Admiral Kraiden, in the name of the New Republic, I place you under arrest.” Oh, no… Kraiden thought.

“General Skywalker, I had hoped my men could have taken care of you down stairs. I take it you’re responsible for the deactivation of my turbolasers, am I wrong?” The Admiral asked. Luke smiled. “I may have had a hand in it, yes. So, are you going to come quietly, or do we have to get rough?” The Admiral laughed. “What makes you think you’re in any position to be making demands like that, Skywalker?” He asked, signaling for his guards to come out of the shadows. The trio was surrounded.

“I wonder…” Kraiden mused. “If I were to take you back to Coruscant with me, would I get a full pardon? I’m sure our lovely Sate Pestage and the High Moff council would just love to get their hands on you.” He started chuckling. “Yes, that sounds like a grand idea! But what about your friends… Who do we have here?” He asked, examining Luke’s two partners.

“Ah, I recognize you! Lando Calrissian, correct? The one who blew up the second Deathstar?” Lando gave him the stink eye. “Yeah, that was me. I also like gambling, tarisian ale, and I hear I can give a good massage if you’re interested.”

Kraiden again chuckled. “Ever the slick one, Calrissian. And who is your other friend…” He asked moving in for a closer examination. “I don’t recognize you. Any extraordinary feats like your friends here?” The Admiral asked, looking right into Kyle’s eyes. “Well, I can look at you and not cry, so I guess that counts as extraordinary.”

This made the Admiral skip chuckling and go straight to full-out laughter. “Skywalker, do you always affiliate yourself with such stupendously entertaining company?” He asked, almost gagging the words out. Luke’s expression stayed hard as stone. “Well, these are the good ones. You should see Han.”

Kaiden quickly regained control over himself. “Well, the fun and games are over now, and we do have a schedule… If you’ll follow me.” The three former rebels just looked at him. “What makes you think we’re just going to go with you?” Luke asked.

“Well, because if you don’t, I’ll kill you.” Kraiden answered, his expression suddenly becoming very serious. He then pulled his blaster out, pointing it at Luke. Kyle yawned. “Hey, can we just take these guys out, already?” Luke nodded, and the rest happened like magic.

Igniting his lightsaber, Luke used the force to send it up, cutting the cable that held the light fixtures in place, sending it crashing down on top of several Stormtroopers. Kyle threw out a grenade he’d been keeping in his back pocket out, exploding and sending several stormtroopers out the command room’s window. Lando pulled out his two blaster pistols and fired them at a charging troop, hitting the Imperial trooper right in the face. When the fight was over, only Admiral Kaiden remained.

Cornered and scared, the Ex-Imperial Admiral waved his blaster around franticly, threatening to shoot anyone who came close. “Don’t you come near me!” He said, pulling out an activation switch of some sort. “If you take one more step, I’ll blow us all to bits!”

Lando didn’t seem convinced by Kraiden, so he took a step. “Look, Admiral, nobody has to get hur-” He never finished his sentence, as Kraiden pulled the trigger on his blaster, sending a bolt of energy right into Lando’s chest. Luke could only watch in horror as his friend dropped to the floor, clutching his chest. “NO!” Luke shouted, dropping to the ground to help his friend.

“I’ll do it again if you take another step!” Kraiden threatened, pointing his blaster at Luke, his thumb firmly over the detonator. Luke payed no attention to the increasingly insane Admiral, trying to see if he could help his friend. “Lando? Lando, are you still with us?”

The old scoundrel looked up at Luke, managing to make a smile. “I’m doing fine ,Kid…” He was able to squeeze out. “Luke!” Kyle yelled, pointing at the now fleeing warlord. “Kraide’s running for it! I’ll watch Lando, go!”

Just as look had gotten on his feet, a proton torpedo came smashing into the command room, throwing Luke, Kyle, and a dying Lando up against the wall. Then, everything went blank.

--

When look awoke, he was in a daze. Quickly getting a hold of himself, he studied his surroundings, seeing Kyle sitting over by Lando’s body, a sad look on his face. A look of mourning. A look of death. “Kyle, is Lando-” Luke’s question was answered by a sad head shake from Kyle.

A strange sensation took over Luke then. It seemed as if every hateful thought and memory he had ever had suddenly compiled into him. He was angry, he was hatful, and the fire of vengeance was burning bright within him.

Lando Calrissian, Rebel hero, successful businessmen, and most importantly, good friend, had died that day. And the man who killed him would share his fate, 100 times over. Luke would make sure of that.

Cover art good. happy Like the cover art.

Just to make sure he didn’t, Luke put his hand to his belt.

That was funny, Luke thinking he'd forgotten his 'saber and making double certain that he hadn't...

Action was well written, and I liked that Luke had a schematic of the place. Good touch.

It was right here that Kraiden started to give me the willies... and I liked him. Creepy enough to be likeable? Wow...

“What makes you think we’re just going to go with you?” Luke asked.

“Well, because if you don’t, I’ll kill you.”

Well... I'm convinced... Go with the creepy sardonic imperial, guys...

Lando Calrissian, Rebel hero, successful businessmen, and most importantly, good friend, had died that day. And the man who killed him would share his fate, 100 times over. Luke would make sure of that.

Lando! cry And... woah... *get's popcorn, settles in to wait and read with baited breath* Bring it on, zonzo.

Well done and good post. happy Liked it lots. (PM's, please.)

Wow, great post, zonzo applause Loved the action and the group you assembled for the mission. Three of my favorite Star Wars characters, and you gave it that great Star Wars bounce with all the humor in there.

But man, I did not see Lando's death coming! shock What a shocker!

And looks like it really messed Luke up cry

Wow, I am a horrible person. worried I made you wait almost a week for this update! tongue

Sorry it took so long, but I rediscovered my love for Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast, and, well, Kyle needs my help to defeat all those Reborn. cool

Here is chapter one:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter One: A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar

Kraiden’s heart was beating ferociously as he raced down the deserted hall, slamming against his chest plate. He had ordered all his men into battle, which, in hindsight, had been a very bad idea, especially now since he had a seemingly blood-thirsty madman on his tail.

Maybe killing Calrissian wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had… He thought as he turned a corner, running into a squad of stormtroopers. “Sir, the rebels have breached the perimeter and are storming through the base!” The Commander reported. “We need to get you to your shuttle.”

“Oh, of course…” Kraiden started, interrupted by the sound of sprinting feet. Knowing exactly who it was, the Admiral pushed though the group of troopers. Grabbing one of them by the arm, he rushed down the hall toward the hanger. “Kill Skywalker!”

--

Charging down the hall, Luke heard Kraiden yelling something. Then, rounding a corner, he saw what it was: A squad of storm troopers, blasters leveled at his head. Igniting his lightsaber, Luke charged in, cutting down two of the Imperial troops. Whipping out his blaster, Luke shot one of the grenades on the belt of one of the remaining troopers, resulting in an explosion that knocked Luke against the wall as well as incinerating the trooper and those around him. Knocking him almost unconscious, Luke’s vision was a mix of deep red and black. As it slowly returned to its normal fidelity, Luke struggled to get off his back.

As the smoke cleared, Luke could barely make out the outline of Kraiden and his stormtrooper escort, running through a door leading to the hanger. Jumping to his feet, Luke rushed to make it through the door, intent on catching Kraiden before he escaped.

He wasn’t fast enough, however, to stop Kraiden from closing a blast door over the entrance, effectively blocking Luke’s access. Smashing his head against the door, Luke collapsed in defeat. There’s no way I’ll be able to him in time… He grimaced. Luke heard Kraiden’s voice over an intercom. “Well, Skywalker, giving up already?” He laughed, adding salt to Luke’s already searing wound. “All this trouble, and you trip at the finish line… How pathetic. I may have not won this battle, but you have lost it, I assure you…”

“Are you going anywhere with this?” Luke interrupted, his eyes flaring with anger. “You seem to be under the assumption that you’re going to make it out of here alive.”

There was a pause over the comm., which was quickly filled by Kraiden’s laughter. “You’re still under the delusion that you can kill me? Look at what’s in front of you. This is one, solid foot of starship-grade durasteel. Not even your lightsaber can cut through this. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to be going.”

He’s right, Luke thought. Unless…

--

“Control, control, you must learn control!” Yoda scolded, shaking his head at his young apprentice in consternation. “Needed, much concentration is, if you intend to move this bolder. Let the energy flow through you.”

Luke just looked at the Jedi master and dropped to his knees, exhausted from the day’s training. “Master Yoda, how am I supposed to lift that thing?! It has to weigh at least two tons!” Luke griped. “I might as well try to lift a Star Destroyer…”

“Size and weight matter not! Again, you must try.” The old Master ordered. Returning his attention to the massive, moss-covered boulder, Luke widened his stance, angry at his constant failings, and called upon the force. Only this time, it didn’t come like it usually did. Instead, it came hard and cold, giving Luke an odd sense of power and confidence. Channeling this new power toward the boulder, he managed not only to lift it off the ground, but lift it several feet above his head.

Slowly setting the large rock down, Luke jumped with joy at his new achievement. “Master Yoda, I did it, I lifted the…” He stopped when he saw the old man’s face.

“The dark side, you used.” He sighed.

Luke stared at him in disbelief. “But Master, how did I… I didn’t even notice.”

“Mmm, easier, more seductive, the dark side is. Control your emotions, you must, or let it ensnarl you.”

“But how will I know the good side from the bad?” Luke asked.

“When you are calm, like this.” The old frog-like Jedi answered. “You must let the force guide you, for it will not lead you astray. Trust in your feelings, and let go of everything else, you must.”

--

Rising to his feet, Luke took the same stance he had those years ago under Yoda’s apprenticeship. Trust in my feelings… Focusing all his power into his palms, Luke unleashed a blast of force energy at the door. He watched as the door bent outward, shooting screws and bolts all around.

As a gaping hole was ripped open in the door, Luke dashed through, hoping he wasn’t too late.

--

Hearing a large crumple from across the large complex, Kraiden instinctively knew what had happened. “This guy just doesn’t know when to give up…” He muttered as him and his Stormtrooper escort approached the turbolift leading to Kraiden’s personnel shuttle. Entering the lift, Kraiden slammed the door shut, leaving the Stormtrooper outside.

“Sir, what about me?” The trooper demanded, hearing ever encroaching footsteps. Sickened by the trooper’s lack of professionalism, Kraiden decided to give the lowly trooper a little glint of hope and motivation before his inevitable death. “Kill Skywalker, and I’ll make you a General.”

Watching the trooper as he ascended up, Kraiden couldn’t help but feel a little guilty of leaving the young man behind.

Watching in horror as his superior officer left him to die, the stormtrooper noticed that the sound of footsteps had stopped, replaced with an eerie calm. Twirling around, he turned to see nothing but air. Then the lights went out. Lacking any form of night-vision, the trooper quickly started to lose his balance as he tried to find a way to escape.

Stumbling through the dark, he screamed as he tripped over a hydro spanner, firing his weapon wildly as he fell. Getting up, he slowly shook himself off, trying to maintain his posture. As he regained his damaged balance, he heard a soft chuckle, followed by the clank of wrench as it hit the ground. Aiming in the direction of the sound, he pulled the trigger of his rifle, emptying half his clip at toward the phantom.

By now, he was drenched with sweat, searching aimlessly for his laughing antagonizer. After taking a few steps, he heard a small ticking sound coming from underneath the floor. Then, in the flash of an eye, a hand shot out, gaining a vice grip on the trooper’s leg. Firing his blaster wildly as the hand ripped him under the floor, he noticed the laughter had stopped.

--

As Luke pulled the Stormtrooper down from the upper level, he ripped the trooper’s blaster away and slammed him onto the ground, effectively pinning him down to the floor. “The door to the turbo lift upstairs is code locked; what’s the code?” Luke demanded, pulling a pipe over the trooper’s neck, choking him.

“Like I’d… tell you…!” The Stormtrooper managed to spit out, causing Luke to tighten his pull on the pipe. Luke didn’t have time for this. Using a malformed version of the technique Obi-Wan Kenobi used five years prior to get Luke and the droids past a stormtrooper squad on the backwater world of Tatooine, Luke dug deep into the mind of the trooper. He rooted out all the flaws, all the nightmares, all the deaths, and every memory and set them down onto a psychological table, like a serial killer choosing his weapon, picking out all the worst memories, all the traumatic experiences, shoving them back in, strait into the front of the trooper’s mind.

Screaming as all the nightmares flooded his already stressed mind, the stormtrooper thrashed about, trying to escape this torture of his own creation. Intent on not letting his prey go, Luke tightened his hold further on pipe, until the trooper finally lost conciseness from both the traumatic experience he had been put through, as well as the lack of oxygen to his brain. A smile stretched across Luke’s face as he felt the heartbeat stop.

Climbing out of the hole he had made in the floor, Luke looked down at the twitching body of the now deceased Stormtrooper and shook his head. Fool, if you had just told me the code, you could’ve lived… I knew it anyway.

--

Confident he had finally escaped Skywalker, Kraiden decided to take a slower pace to his shuttle. Walking past one of the view ports leading to his personal hanger, he saw the extent of the day’s battle. He could see the feint outline of several Mon-Calamari cruisers sticking out of the ground, no doubt blown out of space by his superior, all-human navy. Those Rebels are no match for my Armies… He thought, though he quickly reexamined that opinion, especially now that his Empire had been torn down by force right in front of his eyes.

Looking a little closer to home, he saw a more graphic representation of the carnage. He saw giant piles of white, no doubt the once proud solders of his army. The whole field was covered in blood, scrap, and carbon scouring as far as you could see, blackening the once plentiful forests, transforming them into a dead wasteland. There were walkers spewed across the land, their hulking wrecks alive with a black, angry flame, fed by their carefully calibrated fuel-cells.

Walking past the view port and into the fuel room, Kraiden stopped when the continually familiar of Luke Skywalker. “This is the end of the line, Kraiden.”

Kraiden sighed. Can’t I just get a break? “So, it seems that Stormtrooper didn’t hold you for long. I’m running out of things to throw at you Skywalker, you keep killing them.”

“Every death here today has been on your hands, Kraiden. Now it’s going to cost you.” Luke said, igniting his lightsaber. Taking a dash-step, Luke slashed at the Admiral’s gut, missing only thanks to Kraiden’s above-average reflexes. As if in punishment, Kraiden in-stepped, bringing the hilt of his pistol over Luke’s head, making a large cracking noise. Then, in an equally fast move, the Admiral clamped Luke’s hand, squeezing so hard he actually broke the pinky of the mechanical hand, sending the lightsaber it was gripping soaring across the room.

Laughing as he watched Luke stumble to his knees, Kraiden brought his weapon level with Luke’s head. “Well, General Skywalker, it seems there isn’t a battle we can fight that I can’t win. A reacuring occurrence, wouldn’t you say?”

Luke answered the Admiral with a cocky smile. “You haven’t won yet!” He exclaimed, sending a blast of the force into Kraiden’s chest, blasting his across the room. Jumping to his feat, Luke used the force to summon his lightsaber to his left hand, charging at the downed Admiral.

Just as Luke was about to bring his saber down onto Kraiden’s head, in a final act of desperation, Kraiden fired his blaster, right into a fuel tank. Sparking an internal spark, the tank showered out sparks, flame catching as they mixed with the fuel.

Luke was able to turn around just in time to see the tank explode, igniting the rest of the room. The last thing Luke saw on Kraiden was a smug smile, followed by the mouthed words, “I still win.” Luke could only scream in rage as the flame engulfed the two men.

Great little flashback to Luke's training days on Dagobah. I love the way you worked that into the story.

Dude! shock

Luke has totally gone over to the dark side and now he's going to be burnt to a crisp. I'm picturing him having to be stuffed inside a Vader-like suit.

Great post, zonzo applause Can't wait to see where this is going grin

Got a crush, do we?

No, zonzo... the only villain I have ever had a crush on was played by Raoul Julia... the man played a very convincing Santa Ana, you know...

Maybe killing Calrissian wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had…

In a word? No, sir, it wasn't...
