"My Captivity by Savages"
Dear someone watching from the shadows;
I’m writing these words in hope that someone, somewhere, will read them and know my story. It is unlikely I will escape my captivity alive, but I remain hopeful that an end is near. From my dim bunk in the worker’s bunkers I’m scrawling on a piece of animal skin I found in the mess hall.
My name is Nessby, of clan Bavar. I am a humanish mish-mash of parts, of no specific race or family tree or breed. My face is like any other face: plain, scuffled, work-worn. Found by the Ryn, I was adopted into this clan, and we traveled as one. Through the Corporate Sector we found our unlikely home. A nomadic race, they’ve no homeworld and little wealth, but a long and crooked history.
On the advent of the Scarhead attack, the caravan hesitated at the news. Nouksin and Mousine didn’t want to bother a journey off world when there were plenty of places to hide here. We moved into a series of abandoned campsites, and celebrated my coming of age in merriment. However, it was only a matter of weeks before the soldiers swept the forest outskirts, and our camp. My family---the entire population of the traveling party---had been taken by surprise as I slept. Perhaps a traitor from the city traded us for a few more weeks of life or payment in credits.
Did I dream a dreamless sleep? To the Ryn and clan Bavar, there could be no such thing among creatures possessing souls, or more aptly, brains. A tapeworm I wasn’t, but I was certainly in need of feeding and clothing and educating about the ways of the galaxy. Through the night I tossed and turned on my little bunk in the shelter made of a long-dead businessman’s decrepit vacation home, shadows swishing like fortune-tellers’ dancing skirts with the lights switched off. Maybe it was the sound of thunder making the hairs on my lopsided ears prick in fright.
When I awoke, an aching pain filled my arms, my legs, my skull. I blinked away tears accumulated through sleep and discovered that the Scarheads had slaughtered everyone inside the log cabin and dismantled the walls around me to use as fuel to burn the bodies, as they would the droids they loathed. I’d been singled out as the only non-Ryn in the area, to be taken to the warrior camp by their leader and his pack of lizard hounds.
No holocam lens can truly describe them. The name Scarheads is apt, for their leathery faces are lined with gashes and spiral lines. Hair is sparse on their scalps, or absent completely. Their leader was heavily armoured in a suit of black crab shell that was still alive. Many appear to smirk, their lips pulled back by the extra legs of their crab armour, or missing. It is frightening when you are this close and have them breathing on your neck. And I will not forget the Commander.
When his cold eyes fixed on me inside the makeshift twig hut, when he told me how his platoon had came upon our house in the dark night with axes and nets and hooks, how he’d waved aside our pleas for mercy, how he’d personally saw to each and every execution of the elders, my blood must have run cold. Where confusion once was, now rightful fury burned.
I managed to scratch his face with a sharp tool I spied on the ground before I darted between the legs of the hounds his soldiers rode. A wave of confusion aided me as the dogs attempted to throw their riders, but before my escape was complete, I was grabbed by my dusky nest of hair by the animal handler and yanked back. Again, the eyes of the Commander fell on me. His frayed lips twitched in delight.
“Very good, human.” he said, fingering the cut in his cheek as blue-black blood flushed his face.
“But you are not leaving.”
Death was still a possibility, but I hoped they’d spare me that. At least in captivity I’d still have the narrow chance of escaping, if not intact. There was nothing they could do to me now that would shame clan Bavar, if they had indeed killed everyone but myself.
I was taken to a small, snailshell-shaped house where a younger warrior handed me a brown garment made of skin. Repulsed by the alien-ness of my homespun dress, the Commander wanted me clad in the garb of his species’ worker caste. How quaint this was. I suspect a more brutal male would have had me fitted with a slave implant before sending me to a caf plantation before what happened next. She exited the minshal to make way for another occupant of the camp.
Then, a tray of homely ooze was placed in front of me. Obviously, I was expected to eat it. I was surprised to see another Ryn, not very old, standing beside me. Her orange tail twitched from side to side, and I spotted a restraining device planted in her skull.
“I am Ryn too. My name is Nessby.” I said, making a customary gesture with my hands. I tried to whistle a tune.
Maybe I looked stupid to this one, already subdued by the Scarheads into mindless drudgery. Maybe I was being watched. I hoped this act of greeting was of little importance to the invaders.
“I, Murren. Why?” she waved back.
I nodded, but would question no further. It was too soon to tell if any members of clan Bavar other than me had survived.
We walked silently to the larger (although the Scarheads hate this word, which they associate with us infidels) building, which resembled a giant, spiny snail.
Inside, it was separated into multiple chambers. In the largest sat the commander, beckoning me forward. I received my assignment; I was to become handmaiden to these strange and savage monsters for as long as I lived. He welcomed me to the grashals of domain Selsk. Handmaiden seemed an awfully quaint word, but I reckon the translator worm had a quirk in its programming. I bowed out of fear, although it was an awful shallow bow.
My captivity has gone on for a year, maybe more, maybe less, but I know not when it’ll end. I am becoming too sleepy to write, and put my pen down for tonight. I don’t know if I’ll wake in the morning, but I hope I will. Someday, someday someone will hear the story of my captivity by scarheads from beginning to end. Even if I’m already dead. At least, the war will be done with sometime after that.
Blessings,
Nessby, Clan Bavar

This is a great piece of characterisation,
kecen
. I enjoyed the backstory you worked in about Nessby and the views of the YV seen through her eyes. It's an emotional piece, due to the way you capture Nessby's ager, dspair and fatalism in her voice, and in the way she describes what she sees. I enjoyed this a lot.
Good to see someone using the Ryn by the way. Don't get to see them in stories very often.

Tahi: I was worried the description she gives might be a bit inconsistent in terms of style, but considering her circumstances, I guess I did well XD
SilSolo: I might write more. This is based off of the spoken word piece "My Captivity by Savages" by Rasputina, which doesn't tell the whole story.

Very nice work,
kecen
.
I really liked all the details you put into the story to give it a lot of depth, both for Nessby's background and her current situation. You've got me wondering now what happened to her and if she ever got away. She seems accepting of her fate for the moment, but also just biding her time until she has a chance to escape.
Great job!
