UNEXPECTED BLOSSOM

The Millenium Falcon landed gracefully on the surface of Yavin IV and the pilot powered her down swiftly. Soon the ramp lowered and Han Solo stepped down, breathing in deeply the damp air of the planet, barely stirred by the upcoming sunset.

The heavy scent of the jungle brought all the memories back at once, as always. This was the place where he had started to fall in love with Leia Organa, so many years ago. The place where, in a way, everything had started.

“Welcome, Captain Solo,” the young padawan greeted, interrupting his reminiscence. “Master Skywalker is finishing with a class but he says he’ll be with you in a few minutes.”

“Thanks, kid. Look, I have some supplies for the infirmary in the cargo hold. My copilot will give you access to them, can you...?”

“Sure, I’ll manage it.”

“Great. Do you happen to know where...?”

“She’s at the Sanctuary of Light. She’s on duty there this week. Do you know the way?”

The Corellian smuggler rolled his eyes. Jedi always finishing his thoughts before he had the time to complete a sentence always grated on his nerves. “If you haven’t moved it since the last time I was here...”

The Jedi student blinked in surprise at the notion. That was Luke’s padawan in a nutshell; quiet, friendly, efficient, no sense of humor.

Nodding to the befuddled young man, he left the landing pad and headed down a narrow path that meandered through the trees. A few minutes later he arrived to the massive round structure that the New Jedi Order that Luke had rebuilt from the ashes of the old had dedicated to all those that had come before them.

The building was mostly a half sphere of stone and glass about fifty meters in diameter and not very remarkable from the outside besides from its size. On the inside, though, it was a whole other business, as Han knew from previous visits. It was like being inside a giant Corusca gem. The light of Yavin’s primary came through the windows and was reflected and refracted in a thousand ways, broken into a dozen colors and fused into white again, creating walls, rooms and alcoves where there were none. It had a strange effect over people, Jedi and non-Jedi alike, heightening and soothing at the same time.

The Corellian went in through the south entrance and stopped just inside, taking in the beautiful vastness. The brown robes of a few Jedi could be seen here and there, all of them immersed in deep meditation. His eyes noticed immediately the small figure clad entirely in white that sat cross-legged in the exact center. His heart fluttered with joy as he recognized the shoulder length chestnut hair.

The light changed, turning grayer as the sun sank below the tree line outside.

The figure in white raised her hands with her palms up in front of her chest, as if she were holding something infinitely precious on them. At first Solo did not understand what she was doing, but then he saw the tiny ball of fire the delicate hands of the Jedi were cupping.

The fireball grew bigger as she spread her hands apart and soon it started to levitate slowly up until it stopped well over her head. Suddenly, she extended her arms fully and the ball of fire exploded silently into a hundred fragments that flew towards the rounded wall, each one of them lighting a small lamp attached to it.

The chamber was flooded again with renewed radiance.

“Sweetheart...” Han Solo breathed in awe.

The small figure turned to him, her fair features lit up by a smile that shone brighter than the hundred lamps. “Dad!” She called loudly, running into his open arms.

When I'm gone
No need to wonder if I ever think of you
The same moon shines
The same wind blows
For both of us, and time is but a paper moon...
Be not gone

“Great job, Raania,” the gentle voice of Master Ni interrupted father and daughter. The girl blushed, pleased by her Master’s praise. “Good to see you again, Captain Solo,” he continued. “How’s the family?”

“Everybody’s fine, thanks, Master Ni,” Han answered politely. He had had his reservations when Luke had assigned him as Raania’s Master, but the old man had slowly gained his trust in the time he had been teaching her and he had never tried to stand between him and his eldest child. “Although the Mistress complains that girl or no girl, this will be her last baby,” he joked.

“But it is a girl,” Raania giggled, then blushed profusely and covered her mouth with her hand.

“You promised,” her father said sternly, waving at her a mockingly menacing finger.

“Sorry,” she shrugged. “But now you’ll only have to keep it a secret for a week or so, right?”

“My wife doesn’t like to know the gender of the baby before they’re born, it’s a Corellian tradition,” Solo explained to the confused Jedi Master. “And after four boys...” He grimaced lopsidedly. “But I warned the little imp here that if I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep it quiet for long...”

“We’ll have to work on that when you come back, Padawan Solo,” Ni addressed Raania. “Discretion is a Jedi’s greatest virtue,” The Master added with a wink. “Are you staying for the evening meal, Captain?” he asked turning to the older Solo. “If not...”

The teenager turned pleading eyes to her father. “Please, Dad?” She knew he did not feel comfortable among the Jedi, but she still tried to make him loose his distrust of them.

Han Solo sighed. He could not say ‘no’ to those eyes that were so much like Leia’s. “Sure... We can lift off after that, right, sweetheart?”

“Then I’ll see you there,” Ni said with a smile, leaving them by themselves.

The girl pulled shyly at her father’s hand. “Are you coming?”

Han Solo nodded.

Though I'm gone
It's just as though I hold the flower that touches you
A new life grows
The blossom knows
There's no one else could warm my heart as much as you...
Be not gone

Han and Raania walked hand in hand along the inner wall slowly, their steps guiding them surely to a point both of them knew well.

The stone pillars that supported the glass panels were not smooth, but carved with letters from a hundred alphabets. The letters spelled names, the names of all known Jedi in history in the native language of their species. New names were added from time to time, as new data became rescued from the Emperor’s brutal attempt to erase everything Jedi. The columns of names all ready reached higher than what Han’s eyes could read in the tricky lighting of the Sanctuary.

At last they reached their destination. It was a wall section that had been one of the firsts in being carved, bearing the names of those that had died to make the rebirth of the Order a reality. Still their names were neither larger nor more adorned than the rest, but every living Jedi knew them by heart. They had been the last of the old and the firsts of the new: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Anakin and Leia Skywalker.

Han Solo’s fingers traced the carving that spelled the true name of the passionate young Princess that had stolen his heart so many years ago. This was all he had left from her. This, and the beautiful daughter they had made together. The miracle child.

Raania Solo slipped her arm around her father’s waist and he threw his around her slim shoulders holding her closer to him. She still did not know the full details about the nature of her mother’s and his relationship; he did not like to talk about her and Uncle Chewie was as stubborn as the Corellian when he wanted. The circumstances of her mother’s death also intrigued her, but Uncle Luke’s diplomatic answer had been that she would know when she was ready for the knowledge. But she did not need to know anything to feel the pain and grief they felt any time they thought of her and that was her gift, and, for a long time, her curse.

Anyway, she thanked the Force every day for giving her father the chance to rebuild his life with that wonderful woman that was about to give him his second daughter. She all ready had two boys of her own when they had met, both about Raania’s age. Even if Han Solo’s daughter – by then aged five – had no intention at the time of sharing her Daddy with anyone by any means, the woman had been wise enough to find her place in their lives little by little.

Two more sons had joined later the de-facto family. And Thera had never made the smallest difference between her and her own children, or made any reference to the ‘oddities’ that happened every once in a while as her adopted daughter’s Force potential developed. That big was that woman’s heart. They missed each other dearly now that Raania had come to live at the Academy most of the time.

Raania looked forward to see her Corellian family again and to meet her soon-to-be-born little sister.

Han cleared his throat. “I brought something,” he said. From a pocket of his perennial flight vest he extracted a small flat package. Discarding the wrapper, he uncovered a thin piece of clear metacrystal with some pink and yellow flowers inside it. “I was told it would stick to any surface, let’s see if they were right...”

He placed the crystal next to Leia’s name, where the light hit the wall more intensely.

“It’s beautiful, Dad... Thank you,” Raania whispered. “Are they...?”

“Yeah,” Han Solo answered. The artist had sworn they were real raanie, the little flowers that bloomed everywhere on Alderaan, in all climates, against all odds. The blossom that ages before it was destroyed had given the planet its name. The name that had been perfect for the undefeatable fighter his daughter had been from day one. Just like her mother.

The night fell on the Jedi Complex on Yavin IV.

Luke Skywalker hurried along the path that lead to the Sanctuary of Light, hoping to still catch his niece and her father there. Han never stayed more than a few hours on planet if he could avoid it. On his way there, he crossed paths with other Jedi that were heading to the main dining hall.

As he arrived to the same entrance Han Solo had used earlier and stopped dead in his tracks, fascinated by the scene shown before his eyes.

All the Jedi had left the building and Han and Raania were the only ones remaining, still sharing a silent moment in front of that spot of the wall Luke himself knew so well. But as his flesh eyes grew accustomed to the soft lighting of the temple, his inner sight revealed a third figure by them.

The translucent silhouette, washed in blue light, turned to look at him and smiled.

Hi, Luke, the calm voice of his lost twin, Leia, spoke in his mind.

Hear my song
Still think of me the way you've come to think of me
The nights grow long
But dreams live on
Just close your pretty eyes and you can be with me...
Dream on

Hi, Leia, he smiled back.

Obi-Wan, Yoda and even his father had been the ones to come to his help any time he needed help in his lonely quest to rebuild the Order. But it was Leia the one to appear any time his worries had been about Raania.

More than once, in his many moments of self-doubt and despair, he had questioned her. You could have stayed if you wanted to... Raania needs you, Han needs you... I need you.

Every time the answer had been the same. This was the only way...

He had never dared asking what the alternative could have been.

When I'm gone
They'll say we're all fools and we don't understand
Oh be strong
Don't turn your heart
We're all
You're all
For all
For always

“Luke...”

Han’s deep voice snapped Luke out of his reverie and he exchanged a warm handshake with the older man. “It’s been some time...” He greeted him.

“Things were pretty busy at home lately,” Solo shrugged.

Although Han’s distrust of the Jedi had never gone completely away, his attitude toward the Order had grown softer with the years as he came to terms with the idea that his beloved daughter was one of them. He had not had an easy path to follow either.

“C’mon,” Raania commanded, stepping between her father and her uncle. “I want to see what’s for dinner tonight. I’m hungry!” She took each of them by one arm and steered them towards the main hall.

“Really? I guess that hockey trick with the fire must be pretty exhausting!” Han laughed, falling in step by her. Raania had always sported a healthy appetite and many times the three grown ups in charge of her had wondered how such a little girl could eat so much. “Or is it the growing spurts again?”

“You wouldn’t believe how much, Dad,” she winked at him as they walked away from the Sanctuary.

As they were about to take a turn that would hide the Sanctuary from their sight, Luke turned his eyes to take a last look at it. Through the growing darkness, he could still see the bluish shimmering by the massive door.

His sister’s voice caresses his mind like a warm breeze. Don’t look back, Luke... Not too much. Move on, like Han did...

Raania tugged gently at his arm and he found her young eyes full of compassion and understanding. Some days he wondered how much did his niece really know. How much went through the bond that she still shared with her mother.

The breeze blew around them and a few night avians started to let their mating call be heard. If he ever asks... - the words in his mind seemed to come from afar now, a mere whisper in the Force currents – tell Han that I’ll never abandon her... or him.

The nightbird sang again.

Let us cling together as the years go by
Oh my love, my love
In the quiet of the night
Let our candle always burn
Let us never lose the lessons we have learned...

THE END

hugs That was a beautiful, if somewhat sad, story. Through the Force, Leia did get to watch her daughter grow up, though.

Brain: Now, Pinky, if by any chance you are captured during this mission, remember you are Gunther Heindriksen from Appenzell. You moved to Grindelwald to drive the cog train to Murren. Can you repeat that?
Pinky: Mmmm, no, Brain, don't think I can.

Sad, but not. I don't know how else to explain it! grin
