	Title: Ignorance Is Bliss, a Talonverse Fall '08 OC Challenge Entry Timeframe: 11 Years After the Battle of Yavin, between TIS: Book Four and TIS: Book Five Characters: Talonverse Original Characters Genre: squadfic humor Notes: This is a vignette entry for the Fall '08 OC Challenge from the Essential Guide to OCs. The challenge is to "[w]rite a story that has some fruit in it..." Talon Intelligence Squadron Official Website The Talon Intelligence Squadron Restoration Project Talon Intelligence Squadron: Not Always as They Seem (Book One) Talon Intelligence Squadron: Not Always Fair (Book Two) Talon Intelligence Squadron: The Pursuit of All That Is Good (Book Three) Talon Intelligence Squadron: The Pursuit of All That Is Evil (Book Four) He was working in the relative quiet of his medical ward, pushing a flimsy here, there, when the near-silent steps echoed from beyond the double doors. They opened with a slight squeak that he mentally noted to fix later on that day. The confident pace of the steps, coupled with the lack of a greeting, only meant that his teammate was the intruder and not anyone who had to be greeted in return or saluted. Specifically, whenever Trika Adair walked into the medical ward, it was usually a part of a larger-scale plan to lure him into a false sense of her innocence. And she usually struck hard within the day. What she could have been up to at that moment, no sentient being could know. Staff Sergeant "Stone" Talson continued to scribble notes on the squad's last mission debriefing. The steaming, hot mug of caf dropped in front of his work. Gently laying down his stylus, he sat back in his rolling chair and prepared to meet her devilish smirk, always in tact in situations like these. "Right on time," he mused, raising a suspicious eyebrow at the gift. "It's been nearly a week since we got back. I was wondering if you'd lost the will to prank." Trika feigned an appalled shock. "Me? Are you kidding? Kriff, Stone, I knew you'd almost lost your lunch on that psychotic amusement ride to rescue Ty, but I didn't know you'd lost your brain in the landing." Stone suppressed a groan at the memory. Quis Heartilly's wild idea to throw them out of the Eagle's back door and let inertia take over had effectively cured him of the curious desire to jump out of a transport without a parachute. After skipping across hundreds of meters of water and taking a nose-first dive into the beach, Stone had been happy enough to have both legs still attached. "I just couldn't give you the satisfaction of that one," he said, still eyeing the container on his desk. "You want to tell me what you've done to it or should I go ahead and start chem-testing the thing?" She plopped into the spare seat next to his desk and flung her head backwards, a hundred or so braids shifting in tandem. In her hand was her own mug of caf, of which she took a large sip before speaking. "There's nothing wrong with it, and I'm offended you think so," she replied, attempting to remain serious while delivering the line. "My days of spiking caf were much brighter back before the Talons." Stone risked eyeing the mug and its contents. "Oh yeah?" he grunted, taking another chance with his life and actually raising the mug to his nose. "I'm pretty sure nothing compares to that time I slipped that truth serum derivative into yours and you fed me all I need to know about your good pranks for the whole year." Trika kicked her feet up, the makings of a good story imminent. "My best wound up being my worst," she began, eyes distant in memory. "And it was an accident, too! I swear I was just trying to keep my nose clean out there at Seventh Fleet." "It never happens that way with you, Eleven." "Never hurts to try," the Chinaési woman retorted, sticking her tongue out while he wasn't looking her way. "In any case, I was a peon over there for the most part. I was still learning Basic and really wasn't able to contribute much else to the production line aside from making sure the cleaning droids made their rounds in a timely manner. My accent was likely enough to keep them away from me. Everyone else had a pretty serious stack of flimsies to analyze all day long, so they usually sent me on errands to keep me busy. "This one guy sends me to make caf one day," she continued, smirking before the punch line, "and he doesn't tell me anything about it. Of course, I've never made caf in my life, and I had definitely never tried it. So, I make some a little too strong and wind up having a taste, just to make sure it's okay." Trika flung forward in her chair as if heaving her inner organs. "It was so ridiculously gross. They're not known for the best caf in the galaxy, anyway, but this stuff was so awful it would make Bullwinkle pass out from the stench." Stone raised an eyebrow at that comment. The good drill sergeant and the Talons' cook was about as disgusting as they came from the field. "No way," he shot back with a grunt. "There's no food or drink that could drop Bullwinkle outright." Trika sat back and nodded enthusiastically. "This stuff was thicker than engine lubricant," she said, raising her right hand to swear it. "So, after testing it out, I wound up deciding to fix it up a little. There was this bottle of fruit juice sitting off to the side, and I poured in a little, gave it a sniff, and thought I had done the poor guy a favor. I even served it with a side of some other fruit, all cut up and looking nice and pretty." "Fruit and caf," Stone declared with a snort. "Only you could come up with something that twisted." "It was namana juice." The medic did a complete double-take. "It was what?" "I know. I know." Trika slouched in her chair, almost looking embarrassed. "And he laughed at me, laughed at the fruit, and probably cursed at me for being so stupid. And then he took the mug of caf and downed the sucker without thinking." Stone slapped his forehead, knowledgeable enough about the effects of namana juice without having experienced them himself. "They just suck the stuff down over there, eh? So, he drank the whole thing and…?" "He started dancing." "Dancing?" "On top of his desk in front of the crew." The medic cradled the mug of caf in his hands, still eyeing it suspiciously. "Too much of that stuff and it could probably wind up being quite addictive on just the first dose." Trika groaned. "It was. I put so much in there that he had to get help coming off it. Needless to say, I was never allowed to make caf again, and I sort of continued to fall down the slippery slope of pranking after that incident. That one might have been accidental, but speaking of being addictive…" He might have been taking a chance with his life, but Stone lifted the mug to his lips and sipped at the caf. When the rim of the mug dropped below his eyes, he could only see the slicer's devilish grin watching, waiting for some reaction. "Pretty good caf, Trikes," he said with nonchalance, setting the mug back down on his desk carefully. "And it tastes pretty normal. No fruit juice or anything." "Not that you know of, anyway," she grinned, getting up and leaving him to his work. He purposefully watched her leave that morning, not willing to chance that she might be hiding just beyond the double doors, waiting for the delayed reaction from some unknown substance in the drink. She had left without any exceptions, though, which meant something a little more disastrous if she had indeed spiked his caf. "There's nothing wrong with it, and I'm offended you think so." Trika never lied, though. Well, she hardly lied. Well, she didn't lie unless it was a part of a huge prank in development. Kriffin' hell. With a quick prayer that his breakfast wouldn't come back up before lunch, his sweat wouldn't turn bright purple during his workout, and he wouldn't start dancing on his desk, Stone took another sip of the unexpected gift. 	Hi, SoA! Thanks for the compliment on my descriptions and for taking the time to read this scene. I sometimes feel like my writing lacks a lot of really elaborate descriptions, and that the way I write them is too predictable. I'm glad to hear you thought they were "smooth." I'm always looking to analyze what I do better, and I'm sure to go back and see what I can do to steadily improve my work with that in mind. 	I'm sorry I took so long to get here, Trikes. Great one-shot! Trika and Stone are always fun to see together: they know each other so well and play off each other wonderfully in humorous situations. 	LOL. I'll see this thread get found every once in a while and get a pleasant surprise when I open it back up! Thanks for reading, Thumps! I've said it before, but I'll say it again... the Trika/Stone dynamic is probably my favorite out of the whole squadron. Trika plays that younger sibling role in a real sibling's absence, I suppose, and she does it to a few Talons during their adventures together across what will wind up being seventeen or so books.
