DISCLAIMER: I own NOTHING! It all belongs to George Lucas, and I’m getting no money for it, so don’t sue.

Author Note: This little bunny just jumped up and bit me without warning in the wee hours, and I felt obliged to type it up. Should anyone take an interest, continue it I shall. If not, well this much was enjoyable to get out. For general timeline placement, it begins during Invincible. And, depending on fan reaction (that would be you folks reading this), I may post a dramatis personae at a later date.

Uncontrollable

One Sith too many

Darth Krayt stood at the edge of the balcony, his gaze focused on the black cobblestones of the courtyard below. The Force was whispering to him now, warning of a threat greater even than the Jedi. Lumiya and Vergere's pathetic vision had, until now, proved to be a timely and useful distraction, but events were in motion; he could feel it. Something was shifting, and not to the advantage of his Sith Order. And that, above all, would not be tolerated.

"You sent for me, my Master?" the Togorian Sith Morto asked as he approached from behind.

Krayt nodded imperceptibly, not bothering to face the new arrival. "I sense a disturbance in the Force."

"I feel it too, my Master," Morto agreed somberly.

Krayt sucked in a heavy breath. "Jacen Solo has become a threat greater than I first anticipated. He debates a strategy that endangers our plans. He must not be permitted to follow this new course."

"What would you have me do, Master?" Morto asked expectantly.

Now Krayt did turn to face the clean-shaven, tattooed Togorian. "You must leave Korriban. You must seek out the source of this disturbance in the Force. And you must eradicate it before it tears apart all I have set in motion." He paused, his eyes narrowing. "And if you should fail me, Morto, you will suffer agonies that will dwarf the pain you felt as your body was ravaged by the Twi'lek's bacteria," he warned.

"Yes, my Master," Morto said, bowing low as a flash of lightening split the dark sky above.

------------------------

"Your pleas are growing tiresome, my apprentice," Darth Caedus rumbled irritably.

Standing a respectful distance behind Caedus in his quarters aboard the Anakin Solo, Tahiri didn't flinch. "It's not a plea, it's a fact, my Lord," she challenged. "Without him, you're doomed to fail."

Caedus rounded on her, his sickly yellow eyes burning with fury. "You would be well advised to watch your tongue in my presence. Or are you still so obsessed with my late brother that you wish to join him in the Force this very day?"

Tahiri barely acknowledged the threat. "You need him to defeat Master Skywalker and the rest of the Jedi."

Caedus' face twitched in irritation. "What you suggest is impossible. I had thought I had made that clear to you," he growled.

"You told me what you had to in order to break my will, but that does not mean you told the truth. It isn't the way of the Sith," Tahiri responded reasonably.

Caedus snorted. "And what would you know of the way of the Sith?"

"I know they lie," Tahiri answered brazenly.

"Not about this," Caedus snapped. "The brat is gone, and you would be well advised to accept it. As my apprentice, you have a greater destiny than Anakin could have ever fathomed. It is in your best interests to accept that, and find what comfort you can in its reality." His expression grew harder and voice colder still. "It is all the comfort you have left to find, my apprentice."

"You're afraid," she scoffed.

With the barest flick of his wrist, Caedus used the Force to send Tahiri crashing hard into the wall behind her. "I fear nothing."

Laying at the base of the wall, Tahiri took a brief moment to gather herself before looking up. When she did, her expression was more vicious than Caedus, or Jacen Solo, had ever seen it. She smirked. "You're terrified," she said, sounding oddly amused. "You'd rather allow yourself to be destroyed by Master Skywalker than risk being unable to control Anakin." She snorted. "A Sith Lord... pathetic."

Enraged, Caedus threw out his lone arm. Force lightening shot from his fingertips, striking Tahiri unmercifully. His face contorted in anger, he assaulted his apprentice without the least regard for her well being, her screams falling on deaf ears.

TBC.

"You told me what you had to in order to break my will, but that does not mean you told the truth. It isn't the way of the Sith," Tahiri responded reasonably.
So then Tahiri admits that her will is broken? Darn, I rather enjoyed that huttslime scene.

Yeah!

"I know they lie," Tahiri answered brazenly.
They do indeed

At this point, I realised what you were doing here: Morto as the Maul to Krayt's Palpatine is a GREAT idea, and it really fits into the personalities of both characters.

Until this point, I'd been distracted by the neat, subtle continuity references that built the scene, the way that "the black cobblestones of the courtyard below" evoked the fortress on Korriban, and the fact that you were using Morto again.

I liked that little switchback. cool

She's got a point. A REALLY great point. grin grin

And, there's an interesting contrast here: whereas Krayt and Morto are tangibly SITH, in the manner of Palpatine and Maul, Jacen and Tahiri are complicated characters who might not be quite sure what they're doing.

This is about more than just Jacen and Tahiri being less clearly, classically Sith than Krayt and Morto. There's a contrast in style, but they're still talking ABOUT being Sith, about what it means. Tahiri, as I noted above, is presenting herself AS Sith, no matter what sort, whether obedient underling or manipulative controller.

Jacen's interesting. I'm not sure I have a clear reading on his character, but he seems to be annoyed by Anakin, or perhaps by his own limitations (or perhaps those two are one and the same: the part of him that wants Anakin back thinks he can't, and that feeds into he part of him that's frustrated because little brother always made him feel he wasn't good enough... all of which is a VERY interesting psychological insight into Traitor).

That said, I think the part of him that's obsessed with Sith destiny cuts in here too. Perhaps for the same underlying pschyological reasons, he insists that the only comfort they have is service to the Sith vision of Order in the Galaxy....

Tahiri's manipulating him, and she knows what SHE wants. A very clever, unruly Apprentice - which makes for an interesting relationship with her Master. And, also, she's Yuuzhan Vong enough to be quite happy to be made to howl with Force lightning.

Does Jacen not want to admit that? Does he only hear what he wants to hear, the agony and punishment that he feels he wants to give her?

Of course, that doesn't mean Tahiri's always going to be on top. She can push his buttons, but she's placed herself in her power, and he's more skilled, less subtle, and more directly controlling. And would Tahiri let Caedus remake her as his loyal Sith weapon, in return for getting Anakin back to serve the Sith, or simply save the Galaxy? I think she might....

The question that poses, I suppose, is whether any part of Tahiri is truly committed to the Sith in an ideological sense, or at least to destroying Master Skywalker. It's a VERY interesting little setup you have here.

This is STELLAR characterization!! grin grin

Ooh nice, great to see you back in action, two stories in a few days, yes. applause
So, Krayt finally makes an appearance in LOTF, by the way, I was wondering what happened to the sequel to your fic, Willful Disobedience, did you ever write one, or was it just abandoned. Just wodnering, because I have searched high and low, and have found no sequel. Nice to see Morto again, as for Anakin, Caedus would not want Anakin back, because Anakin would be the only one who could stop him effortlessly, so that is why he won't bring him back, assuming that he can. Caedus has only one arm, so this is after the Duel on Nickel One, are you going to give an explanation of why he does not get a new one, or the old one re-attached. Also, Tahiri looks like a Sith, but in the end, all she wants is Anakin back. Great fic, I can't wait for the next update.

I'd call that an accurate analysis.

She's smart. It's hard to know whether she's telling the truth in saying that he broke her will, and emphasising her loyalty, or sneakily flattering him by telling him what he wants to hear, himself.

It's most certainly one or the other. mischief

Noticed that, did you.

Tahiri, as I noted above, is presenting herself AS Sith, no matter what sort, whether obedient underling or manipulative controller.

There is a debate taking place, no doubt there. Aside from simple imagery, I'd would have to say Tahiri is acting the most like a Sith. Take that for what it's worth... mischief

Jacen is, at the risk if being obvious, somewhat mad here. He's long since lost the perspective needed to fight wars both internal and external, and it's showing enough for his apprentice to call him on it.

That said, I think the part of him that's obsessed with Sith destiny cuts in here too. Perhaps for the same underlying pschyological reasons, he insists that the only comfort they have is service to the Sith vision of Order in the Galaxy....

It's his anchor to, dare I say, sanity. Or as close to sanity as a Sith Lord gets.

Tahiri's manipulating him, and she knows what SHE wants. A very clever, unruly Apprentice - which makes for an interesting relationship with her Master. And, also, she's Yuuzhan Vong enough to be quite happy to be made to howl with Force lightning.

All things being what they are here, Tahiri is most certainly the one in control of this scene.

Does Jacen not want to admit that? Does he only hear what he wants to hear, the agony and punishment that he feels he wants to give her?

In a word, yes.

I think she might, as well. But there again, it's a matter of her placing herself in his power. wink

The question that poses, I suppose, is whether any part of Tahiri is truly committed to the Sith in an ideological sense, or at least to destroying Master Skywalker. It's a VERY interesting little setup you have here.

No sequel as yet for Willful Disobedience, I fear. But one is still being debated so I'll keep you informed if/when it starts.

It's all about Anakin; you're right about that. Tahiri wants him back. Jacen fears what Anakin in the mix means for him. Darth Krayt's Sith... well, you'll see what they want in due course. wink

Specters of the past

Darth Caedus frowned as Tahiri went still. His apprentice was proving to be quite troublesome indeed, he mused. The fact that her potential to be his apprentice was so high made the current situation all the more infuriating. He would need to reign her in quickly if he was to make full use of her talents. But with the war seemingly nearing its end and a showdown with Luke Skywalker looming, there was precious little time.

You try my patience, and I have little left, thought Caedus.

The Dark Lord eyed Tahiri with anger flashing in his yellow eyes. The Embrace of Pain served to make him feel in control, but he was not so foolish as to trust the sensation. No, this woman in front of him was half Yuuzhan Vong. Perhaps more, he thought idly. She would take every bit of cruel agony the Embrace had to offer, and then she would smile and request more of the same. Were his apprentice not so defiant, her reactions to the Yuuzhan Vong device might well have earned her Caedus' praise. But as it stood now, it was not to be the case.

Caedus' comlink buzzed for attention, and he moved quickly to answer it. News of enemy fleet movements and a message from the Imperial Remnants Moffs' Council came streaming through the connection. Caedus listened intently, then quickly relayed his instructions and his decision to return to the Anakin's bridge. He would leave Tahiri to her ecstasy... for now.

Caedus gave his apprentice a last disdainful look, then turned crisply on his heel towards the door. He would deal with her later, after more pressing matters had been seen to.

"You know, this isn't exactly what I had in mind when I asked you to kiss Tahiri for me, Jacen."

Caedus froze in place, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. The voice was Tahiri's, yet it wasn't. He turned slowly, his eyes, suddenly yellow no more, met Tahiri's green orbs. Her head was raised just barely above her chest, and her eyes held his gaze. For a long moment, neither spoke. Then, without warning, her head dropped back down, her eyes closing once more.

Caedus forced his wide eyes to return to normal, then slowly, tentatively he approached his unconscious apprentice. Nothing seemed odd, nothing at all. All was as it had been moments before. He grasped her hair, pulling her head up so that he might look into her face. Tahiri didn't stir. A trick, he thought. Some game of Master Skywalker's, or perhaps Tahiri herself, the Sith Lord reasoned. He let go of Tahiri's hair, allowing her head to drop back to her chest.

"Anakin," Tahiri mumbled, barely coherent and her eyes still closed.

Caedus' face twitched at the name. A touch reluctantly, the Dark Lord stretched out with the Force. His eyes closed as his level of concentration rose. He had to know. His face scrunched up the more he extended himself, but it was futile. There was nothing to be found. Caedus opened his eyes at last, a trace of confidence returning to his features. A trick, he decided forcefully. He snorted and shook his head. Skywalker could play whatever games he wished, but it would matter little. In the end, Luke Skywalker would fall, and the Jedi Order with him.

------------------------

Inside his quarters aboard the Hapan Battle Dragon Loyal Dragon, Luke Skywalker felt restless. It was not a sensation he enjoyed, nor was it one he felt he could afford. Soon they would be back on Shedu Maad, and soon after the war would end... one way or another. That much he could feel with as close to certainty as he could imagine having. Caedus would find them, sooner or later. And when he did, it would fall to Jaina to finish what the Grand Master himself could not. Not for lack of power or skill, of course, but for reasons much more personal.

You need rest, Farmboy.

Luke turned slowly, a sad smile upon his face. "We all need rest," he countered.

Mara's ghost gave him a quirky smile. I'm dead, Skywalker. I'm long past needing rest. She paused, giving him a mildly warning look. And none of that 'there is no death' business. Between the two of us, I'm the only one in a position to know for sure.

Luke almost laughed. Almost.

You're worried.

"I shouldn't be?" The challenge was anything but forceful.

The ghost shrugged. I suppose it depends on what you're worried about.

The strain that had clouded Luke's expression earlier returned in force. "Jaina, Ben, Leia, Han... it's a long list."

But not yourself?

"I can take care of myself," Luke answered simply.

Mara's quirky smile returned. If that were true, we would never have been married.

Luke smiled faintly. "Ben's inherited your knack for verbal abuse."

Mara's smile was both proud and sad. I always knew he had it in him. She paused, her expression turning more serious. Thank you for saving him, Luke. I knew you would.

"He wanted to kill Jacen. So did I. Part of me still does," he confided, though it was hardly a secret.

Who hasn't lately? Mara responded casually. Darth Brat seems to inspire that sort of thing in people.

"I almost lost Ben," Luke said, pain in his eyes and voice.

And I nearly won. In the balance, ifs, maybes. and could haves don't amount to much. You didn't lose him, Luke, and that's what matters.

The Grand Master drew in a deep breath, his chin rising. "He's coming for us, isn't he?"

Mara nodded. And he's not coming alone.

TBC.

Great post, nice to see such rapid updates. I love the way you write Caedus, and He's coming and he's not alone. Does that mean Tahiri, or is Caedus going to bring back Anakin, if he can. Nice to see Mara's ghost actually speaking, and let's see more of Morto. I'd write a longer review, but I'm at work. Great job, and I can't wait to see more. applause

Wow, Riina here actually passed out from Caedus' 'torture'.

As for Anakin speaking through her, that was way cool and way so out there. Gave me the chills.

Yet... Ahhhh, nothing like reading about an unconscious woman. There's just something about that... I need help.

...

Caedus isn't alone? Who is it? Your OC or Anakin?

Oooo...love the story. happy

I'm curious to see who Tahiri is referring to, and who Morto has to destroy.

Can't wait for more!

ooooo me likey! I'm not to fond of Darth Caedus, but you definitly write him very well. I'm very interested to see where this Anakin thing go's. Its so neat to think that he might be coming back! I can't wait to see how it all plays out. And I am very happy to see Luke talking to Mara, it was so bitter sweet, and you really write the two of them very well too.

I'm glad you're enjoying Caedus. happy He's rather fun to work with.

Does it mean Tahiri or Anakin? It could mean neither. mischief You know those Force ghosts can be pretty cryptic, even when they don't sound like it. wink

Mara is just... cool

And more Morto is most certainly in the offing. wink

grin It seemed like something ghostly Mara could pull off.

I can promise you you'll see and hear more from Anakin... in one for or another. mischief

And really glad you liked Luke and Mara. That was a really fun scene to write. happy
