Just found this. Interesting premise, I can't wait to see how things work out with the Sith twins in charge. If you have PM updates, I'd like to be added.

So Jaina killed her Uncle Luke as her sacrifice to become a Sith? Wasn't Jacen originally going to be the sacrifice where she could kill two birds with one stone? Well Jacen's days are still numbered huh, when will that come to be? And on another note, Ben must be having one kriffing bad day, one of his cousins killed his mother while the other one killed his father. Can't wait til the next one.

Jaina: Haha! I knew you'd like that.
Jade: Too easy for whom? mischief
Cambius: I'm not sure. I'll go ask Vergere. tongue And Jaina's Sith name will actually take a few more chapters, sadly.
dm1: Hello! Oh yes, things are going to be interesting. Welcome to the PM list!
smash128: Yes, Caedus' days are quite numbered. How numbered is yet to be seen. And we are going to see some of the fallout from all this on Coruscant, definitely. There shall be chaos.

And more for you, while I go recover from two weekends in a row of geology fieldwork. I hope I get the mud out of my jeans someday.

Chapter 18: The Star

Vergere materialized in front of the ship as soon as Caedus and Jaina returned. She had a bit of a questioning look, underlaid with deep satisfaction. “Jaina Solo. I expected you to return something like this.”

Jaina laughed darkly. “You never expected me to return at all.”

“Really, you weren’t supposed to figure that out.” Vergere tossed an admonishing look in Jaina’s direction. “Shall we return to the ship? It is time to return to Korriban.”

Throughout the flight back to Korriban, Jaina, Caedus, and Vergere avoided each other. Jaina spent her time in quiet introspection, wondering exactly what she was going to do upon her return to Korriban. Clearly, she would have to kill Caedus someday, and find her own apprentice, and keep the galaxy under her control… Daala was going to be a powerful opponent, one determined to foil the Sith at every turn. The Jedi were still present and active, and would not stand long for the murder of their Grand Master.

Caedus was halfway between pleased with Jaina and a bit sad that his tenure as Dark Lord of the Sith was soon to end. He remembered what Lumiya had said to him upon his own ascension, and her own conviction that Caedus’ ascencion meant her own end. He wasn’t so sure about how soon Jaina would destroy him- she still needed a Sith name and had to secure better control over the galaxy. Clearly, Jaina had some kind of higher plan with the Sith, and if she was planning to depose him, he’d never know.

Vergere drifted around the ship, laughing to herself. She had set up the whole thing from quite a few years ago, and it had finally come to fruition.

As the ship touched down on Korriban, Jaina forced herself to think about what was next. A Sith name, eliminating Caedus, and taking control of the galaxy. Three things that were impossible together but all completely necessary.

“You seem to have quite a bit on your mind.” Caedus stood in the doorway to the cockpit, watching Jaina. His expression was oddly bemused for someone planning to die.

“You’ve been purposefully avoiding me.” There was quite a dark tone in Jaina’s voice. “Is it because you don’t quite want to surrender your power to me yet?”

“No. We are all fully aware that we shall have to die to allow the next Sith to take over.”

“You haven’t a problem with that?”

“Should I?” Caedus was cultivating quite the air of nonchalance.

Jaina sprang from the chair and shoved Caedus against the wall of the cockpit. “Stop lying. You still have completely normal emotions- you don’t want to give up the power you’ve worked so hard for, and you’re guilty as hell about killing Luke.”

“You’re just as guilty,” Caedus shot back, a bit of his control slipping.

“So what. It had to be. I’m your experiment that wasn’t supposed to succeed, and now you don’t know how to deal with me.”

“Enough, children,” Vergere whispered. She had suddenly materialized in a corner, still wearing her trademark bizarre smile. “Your arguing will not be productive.”

Disgusted, Jaina shoved Caedus away from her and stormed back to her seat. She resumed landing the shuttle, ignoring both
of the other beings in the cockpit.

Vergere turned to Caedus and smiled mysteriously. She does have a point, you know.

“Shut up,” Caedus hissed. Jaina wasn’t worth losing his temper over.

Try not to act in such a way, then. Vergere took on a bit of an admonishing tone. She needn’t any further reason to kill you; your very existence is reason enough.

“You do know I can hear you?” Jaina glanced over her shoulder at Vergere. “We’ll talk when we land.”

Vergere settled her glowing form on the rubble of a large fallen statue outside one of the tombs. She had mentioned to both
Jaina and Caedus that they needed to talk to each other, and she was going to mediate. Neither of them had further spoken either to each other or to her, and she wasn’t expecting to see them for several days. Jaina’s ascension to being Dark Lady of the Sith had left Caedus very conflicted; he didn’t know how to share his power. It was time that they resolved their problems.

“You wanted to speak with me?” Jaina emerged from one of the tombs, clearly seeing the upcoming discussion as a necessary evil.

Caedus appeared silently, casting dark glares in Jaina’s direction. Jaina acknowledged him with a brief nod and sat next to Vergere on the statue.

“The twins are together again,” Vergere commented. “There was a time when you were Jedi together. Now you are Sith together. Why is it that only now do you find problems in sharing your power?”

“Why do you think?” Jaina replied quickly.

Caedus nodded. “Jaina, would you believe me if I said I don’t know how to handle being your equal?”

“I’d say you’re lying, but that seems to be your default setting.”

Vergere didn’t say anything. She examined both of them carefully, still not speaking and showing no emotion. Clearly, she wasn’t pleased with the way their talk was going.

“I have an idea.” A rather malicious smile played at Jaina’s lips. “Lord Caedus, if I might have my Sith name and acknowledgement of being your equal, we could find a way to rule this galaxy together.”

“It certainly isn’t the worst idea I’ve heard from you.” Caedus sighed. “We work together to keep this Galactic Alliance together, while establishing Sith rule in whatever way we see fit.”

“Fine. I’m going to meditate a bit.” Jaina got up and went into one of the caves.

Caedus glanced at Vergere. “You consider that a productive conversation?”

“You two had little to say.” Vergere was no longer visibly displeased. “Through the course of Jaina’s training, you two have resolved a lot of your problems and learned that you work quite well together as a team. You are twins, after all, and being a Sith duumvirate will certainly be more reliable than everything the Sith of the past have done.”

Nonetheless, Caedus wasn’t convinced. “For the time being, I’ll trust your judgment, but as soon as Jaina and I start trying to kill each other again, there will once again be one to embody the power and one to crave it.”

Jaina couldn’t get those long-ago words out of her mind- One to embody the power, and one to crave it. Ever since she had fallen into the way of the Sith, she had always wondered how true it was and which one she would be. Now, she had an answer.

The legendary twin-battle. It had been in both of their minds ever since the Yuuzhan Vong war, though neither of them had wanted to admit it. Jaina had battled Jacen many times, again and again seeking to defeat someone she thought of as the other half of her mind. Once again, she was facing him…

No, it wasn’t Jacen. Jacen had been dead for years on end, replaced by Lord Darth Caedus. Jaina, too, had been dead for several years, replaced quite gradually by this Sith woman who was about to destroy the Dark Lord. It was time now for the Sith Lord and Lady to determine which one was the stronger.

Jaina stood on a fallen statue that had formed a bridge in the Valley of the Dark Lords, looking down a deep chasm. At the other end of the statue, Caedus watched her, his fiery lightsaber ignited. He stood perfectly still, his gold eyes unable to hide the hatred for his challenger.

In the night of Korriban, millions of stars gleamed. Jaina glanced up at them for a moment, recalling how she had traveled among them for most of her life, before falling into the abyss beneath her feet. But she had come out of it, changed, recreated…

“No,” she whispered. She had no need to speak loudly- Caedus would hear her. “I’m not going to fight you here or now. We are equals, and only time will determine which is stronger.”

She walked away from the bridge and the abyss, seeing in the far distance a hint of sunrise.

Enjoy while I go write the last four chapters of this story and fail utterly at fending off the plot bunny for my next project.

See, now you've made me conflicted. As you can probably guess, I absolutely love the idea of the Sith twins working together to rule the galaxy. But then you go and use the term 'duumvirate', and it sounds so silly...

And if Vergere has been planning this for who-knows-how-long, then why was she surprised by Jaina's survival? Sneaky chicken

nicely done. Something tells me that maybe Vergere isnt as surprised as she claims to be that Jaina survived this long. Remember, "everything I tell you is a lie".

Jaina: Sith twins ruling the galaxy: Made. Of. Awesome. "Duumvirate:" Valid word, at least according to SpelCheck. Then again, this is the same SpelCheck that needs a supplement for the sciences.
Cambius: Why, of course! But don't know you that everything Vergere tells us is the truth?
cdgodin: Thanks! Sith are quite a bit of fun to write.
Jade: I think you're right. Though neither of them might be aware of it quite yet. And battle? There probably will be a few more. And the new bunny is a Thrawn-era AU that will probably end up with some L/M. Sigh.

And here you go, more story. While I go get some sleep and accept that I can't do calculus.

Chapter 20: The Moon

“If you don’t mind my intrusion, Chief Daala, I’ve been wanting to talk to you for quite some time.” Leia was banking on her reputation and still considerable influence to gain an audience with Daala.

Daala glanced up from her desk, quickly arranging her face into the appropriate diplomatic expression. “Jedi Solo. Allow me to express my condolences about your brother’s sudden death.”

“Thank you.” Leia nodded gravely. She closed the door behind herself as she entered the office, and fixed Daala with a cold gaze. “I know you know something about what happened to Luke. No one will tell us anything but that he met with an accident. I know what lightsaber burns look like, and I know you believe there are Sith on the loose.”

“What do you want me to say?” Daala was clearly trying to not talk any longer, trying to get Leia out of her office.

“Tell me what really happened to Luke.”

Daala paled. “Despite your exemplary record of service to the Alliance, I still cannot actually tell you anything about that; it’s still under investigation.”

“You will tell me.” Leia didn’t put a Force suggestion behind her words at all; she could see that Daala was desperate to tell someone what had really happened.

“Don’t try it.” Daala didn’t have to even mention that Leia’s comment was unwelcomed. “It doesn’t matter what I think about what happened. Speak to my investigators.”

“I have. They sent me here.”

“They shouldn’t have done that.”

Leia laughed darkly. “Perhaps you should check on the people you assign to cover your tracks. You certainly aren’t as good at it as you think.”

“I’m not perfect.”

“Neither am I. But I do know you’re hiding something. It would make both of our lives easier if you’d tell me what you know about Luke’s death.”

“You won’t believe me,” she replied, sounding a bit distracted.

“I will.” Leia met Daala’s eyes.

“How does one get rid of a Sith?” Daala asked quickly, for the first time allowing a bit of vulnerability to show through.

“Or two of them? There are always supposed to be two, master and apprentice. I think they’re both Masters by now. They killed Master Skywalker and…”

“And?” Leia was steadying herself on the desk. “Why didn’t you tell me before that there were Sith? Why didn’t you tell Luke? You could have…”

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” Daala admitted, meeting Leia’s eyes for the first time in their meeting. “That… monster convinced me to permit himself and that demon he made out of your daughter as the true rulers of the galaxy.”

“Wait.” It was Leia’s turn for a shocked silence. “Jaina was with Caedus, as a Sith?”

Daala nodded faintly. “Master Skywalker sacrificed himself to her for some reason I don’t understand. I don’t know enough about the Sith to know what happened…”

“Caedus captured her sometime during the battle at Shedu Maad.” Leia began to piece the story together in growing horror.

“Something happened that convinced Jaina to turn to the Dark Side, and she’s fallen far enough that…”

“Far enough to have the audacity to come here and kill Master Skywalker. How will the great and vaunted Jedi order deal with this?”

“I don’t know,” Leia confessed. For once, Daala’s unspoken comment was very true. You Jedi police yourselves and always fail to notice when one of yours is falling. It takes a disaster of this magnitude before you wonder what you’re doing wrong.

As soon as Leia had left, Daala turned her attention to the holomessage hidden in her desk. She knew it was from Jaina- no one else would have left a message for her without any other explanation.

“Chief Daala. My apologies for this sudden intrusion, but we do have rather serious matters to discuss.” It appeared that Jaina was on some backwater planet, wherever she thought was a suitable hiding spot.

“It seems you are quick to forget your promise to not speak of certain recent events concerning the business of Force-users. Due to the potentially precarious political situation, I cannot permit you to speak so freely about what we should both agree to be highly classified.”

Daala almost shut the holo off right then and there. What did Jaina think she was doing, ordering around the Chief of State as though it were her right? Never mind the bargain they’d made. A promise wasn’t worth anything when it was made to someone who was trained to lie.

“Furthermore, our bargain is still valid. I understand your displeasure with allowing me to control your daily affairs, but I cannot trust you with your own devices yet. Get the Jedi to stop asking questions about Skywalker’s death, and especially get Leia Organa Solo off your case. Otherwise, I shall have to take rather drastic measures. Trust me, you wouldn’t like that.” She paused for a moment to allow the meaning of her words to sink in. “It is always most unwise to cross a Sith.”

Disgusted, Daala tossed the recording across her office and watched it shatter on the wall. “Intimidation, threats, murders… there is a reason why I’ve always tried to stay out of politics.” She thought again about her conversation with Leia, in light of Jaina’s recent message…

It was clear that the Sith were not going to be content with ruling the galaxy through Daala. They would stop for nothing but a new Empire, with Caedus and Jaina as Emperor and Empress…

Enjoy.

I do agree that the idea is Made. Of. Awesome. And I think that the twins aren't hiding, they're planning. There's a difference Daala, Sith don't hide. And who in the Jedi Order would be a match for either twin much less both? I can't think of anyone, unless they massively team up, which leaves them in even more danger (bombs ahoy?). Can't wait for the next update!

Jade: I think I'll start on the Thrawn-era project after NaNo is over (should I have not worn out my keyboard). And yes, I couldn't resist that conversation. You know Daala's going to pay for that slip of the tongue later.
Cambius: Either that, or she has some darn good spies.
Jaina: Indeed. Sith plot and scheme. Mwahaha, I can't promise a happy ending. But right now... I think the Jedi are in a bit over their heads.
Vader: Oh yes. Sith are awesome. There's a reason why they tend to be frequent characters in my stories.

And here's another update, while I'm busy studying German by reading Wookieepedia in German. I understand far more than I thought I would. Studying another language is a great excuse to read interesting things in the language.

Chapter 21: The Sun

“What are you planning?” Caedus was automatically suspicious of Jaina’s recent silence. “You’re never quiet for long without there being some trouble about.”

“It’s none of your business.” Jaina was smiling a bit oddly. “A recent idea of mine came through a bit better than I’d hoped it to. And no, it isn’t anything that would affect you.”

“I don’t believe a word of it.” Caedus stalked off, obviously suspecting that something was wrong.

“Oh, you wouldn’t believe it if I told you,” Jaina said softly after he had left.

“What is Jaina doing?” Caedus glanced at Vergere, who sat in a dark alcove.

The Force ghost ruffled her feathers a bit. “Well, I don’t know whether that really is your business.”

“I thought we were done with all of the games,” Caedus hissed. “You’re never quite willing to tell me anything, especially when it might be important. You’re still as deceptive as ever, following your own agenda. What are you and Jaina doing?”

“How do you know I’m involved in whatever underhanded things she may or may not be planning?”

“I know you.”

“So be it.” Vergere looked oddly pleased. “I’ll leave it up to Jaina to tell you or not what she’s doing. She may not want to share her project with you until it’s completed to her satisfaction.”

Just after Caedus had left, Jaina walked over to where Vergere was sitting. “He’s certainly suspicious.”

“Well, what do you expect? You act like you’re plotting something, if you’d care to share it with me?”

“It’s a bit of a long story.” Jaina gave Vergere a suspicious look oddly reminiscent of one of Caedus’. “I know you well enough to not trust you with anything really important; I can’t trust that you won’t betray me.”

“Whose side do you think I’m on right now?”

“That doesn’t matter. I don’t think you’re on either side- you pretend to like Caedus or myself to gain our trust, and from there you often exploit that a bit much.”

“A bit much?”

“I needn’t remind you of everything you did to Jacen on Yuuzhan’tar.” Jaina glared at Vergere, who was beginning to fade.

Vergere didn’t respond at all, but instead vanished.

Jaina wandered through the Valley of the Dark Lords to where the old shuttle was hidden. She was ready to leave Korriban, leave Caedus there to rot for a while, and once her work was done, return to finish him off.

As she powered up the shuttle, she wondered what Vergere would think of it. The feathery little ghost had admitter her lack of loyalty to either Caedus or Jaina, and probably had some sort of ulterior motives. Vergere was just the sort who would play Jaina and Caedus against each other and see if either of them were able to survive.

Well, the ultimate result was obvious. Caedus was going to have to die soon, and from what he had said to Jaina, he fully expected it. Jaina had a plan already, and just had to get to Coruscant in one piece.

“Who are you and why are you here?” The GAG officers assigned to Chief of State Daala were understandably quite protective of her.

Jaina couldn’t resist seeing how long she could keep them arguing before she used some Force persuasion. “I told you.
My identity is none of your business. If you tell Chief Daala that an associate with some very urgent business is here to see her, she’ll understand.”

“How do we know that you are who you claim to be?”

“Just ask her. You can gauge my identity by her reaction.” Jaina added a disarming smile.

One of the officers began to make a move towards his pistol and comlink. “You have five seconds to tell us who you really are.” The second officer nodded assent.

Jaina laughed darkly. “You don’t need to know who I am.”

The first officer repeated. “I don’t need to know who you are.”

The second one wasn’t buying it. “Who do you think you are, a Jedi?”

“No,” Jaina shot back nonchalantly. “I’m a Sith.”

“A what?” The second officer looked even more suspicious. “Isn’t that one of those evil Jedi?”

“You could say so.” Jaina was trying not to burst out laughing.

Just as the second officer was about to call for backup, Chief Daala stepped out of her office. “What is it… Oh.
You.” She paled at the sight of Jaina standing in the hallway, ever so nonchalant, dressed as a normal Coruscant citizen.

“Chief Daala. My pleasure. I hope I’m not inconveniencing you?” Jaina smiled a bit ominously.

“No, not at all.” Daala was still very pale and obviously nervous. “How may I help you?”

Jaina led the way into the office and slammed the door behind her. “Tell me what you told my mother.”

“How the hell do you always find out about these things? I go out of my way to keep certain things quiet, and yet you omniscient Sith always seem to figure out exactly what I’m doing.”

“Stop bluffing.” Jaina sighed. “You’re scared to death of me and don’t want to admit it.”

“If you’d care to tell me exactly what you’re planning…?” Daala let the question hang.

Jaina fixed Daala with a dark ruby glare. “You haven’t exactly proved yourself trustworthy and you’ve mentioned my existence, which I am trying to keep secret, to the Jedi. I can’t think of a single reason why I shouldn’t have you eliminated and be done with it.”

“If you don’t want your existence exposed, you’d do best to keep me alive.”

“Yes, but in what state? If you are captured by the Sith, or by whatever I allow to take over the government, that wouldn’t look good for you and would probably be worse than being dead.” Jaina was setting up a rather neat trap.

“However, if I leave you alive and you allow me to be somewhat of an unofficial adviser…”

“What would this entail?” Daala asked cautiously.

“I thought you’d warm up to the idea.” Jaina was smirking once again. “I find that two’s company but three’s a crowd, as the saying goes. Caedus is starting to get in my way a bit, and I’m rather concerned that he might not share my view for the way I’d like things to go in the galaxy. Overall, I’m interested in forming a mutually beneficial alliance that would eliminate our worst threat.”

“Presently, you and Caedus are my worst threat. Should I help you eliminate him, I am permitted to live under your command?”

“Somewhat. You’ll also keep the Jedi and anything else that might not like me away, and permit me to establish an order of Force-users directly under my supervision.”

Daala’s eyes narrowed. “This sounds suspiciously like a new Sith order.”

“Oh, call it what you will.” Jaina tossed her head. “Is this agreeable?”

“All you want is for me to let you do what you want, form a new Sith order, eliminate your brother, and take the blame for anything you screw up on. Are you mad?”

“Nowhere near as mad as you’d have to be to refuse me.” Jaina’s eyes seemed to be a bit more red than usual. “I have always been under the impression that you’re a sensible woman, and turning down a bargain such as this would call your judgment greatly into question.”

Daala sat down in her chair to think. “I will agree on one condition.”

“And that would be?”

“Keep me out of anything to do with the Jedi. Though I do not agree with letting Force-users run loose, I do respect many of them on a personal level and would rather not have their blood on my hands.”

Jaina laughed softly. “Of course. I would far rather deal with them personally.”

Enjoy. And I'll try to get another update in during NaNo, or I could just be evil and leave you in suspense...

Daala has made a bargain with the devil. Doesn't she know that those things never work out?
