Here's my response to the fourth Ultimate Drabble Challenge:

Night Musings
Genre: Anything and everything
Time: Anywhere in Beyond, up to around 50 ABY
Characters: Cast from Fate of a Warrior (essentially LOTF characters, plus my own OC's)
Notes: This is my first drabble ever...

This drabbles will take place within the alternate universe of my story The Face of a Warrior. (The drabbles will be addendums--short missing bits, bits of scenes from a different perspective, etc.) However, most of them should make sense even if you haven't read the story.

Week 1: Aulani
Week 2: Escape to Flareship
Week 3: Jaina on Mandalore
Week 4: Aulani/Davin
Week 5: The Fel Family

Flash in the pan
“Why?” she whispered, holding the holo of her parents in her hands. “Why? I thought that I could lead Carida’s resurgence? I thought I could make Carida matter.”

Incensed by the silence, she grabbed the holo and slammed it against the wall.

“There!” she cried. “I’ve broken Carida’s last link to the Empire! I’ve set us free!”

She laughed bitterly.

“Why does this mean nothing to me?”

She picked up the holo. Cracks had appeared, separating her parents from the background.

Just like me. I will always be alone because it is the only way I can accept my failure.

Out on a limb
“Your plan, Your Highness?” Alei asked.

Aula picked up the Caridan bloodflower lying innocently on her desk. “We will start moving the fleet, a little at the time, and hope that the Chiss fail to notice.”

“If they do?”

“If they do,” Aula whispered. “Carida will be destroyed.” She made as if to crush the flower in her hands, and then stopped at the last instant, unable to free herself from her title.

“Carida was already destroyed when we gave up the idea of hope,” Alei remarked bitterly.

Velvet petals brushed against her hand as if they agreed with Alei.

Out of the blue
“We will start moving the fleet, a little at the time, and hope that the Chiss fail to notice.”

The gathered commanders—her most trusted allies—rose up in protest.

She regarded the cacophony with tears sparkling at the corners of her eyes, and then stretched her right hand out. The bloodflower layer in her palm, a reminder of her power should she take up the mantle.

“Is this all we are?” she whispered, but nobody took the time to listen—to care. “Is this all that remains of Carida? All that remains of our legacy?”

Is this my fault?

Wet behind the ears
“Is it to your liking?”

She bent down, brushing her fingers against the only scarlet stem amidst a field of green.

“Yes,” she whispered, imagining an inevitable moment of her future.

She would stand in front of her people, tears rolling down her face as she took the oaths for a role that she had never wanted. But, when her eyes would turn back to her people, she knew that she would see nothing beyond what they had lost.

Fate awaited only the growth of the Caridan bloodflower.

It bloomed in front of her eyes, scarlet petals unfurling towards her.

Heat of the moment
“Marry me,” Gavrisom demanded.

“No!” She whirled turning around to face him. “You only care for yourself. Not for Carida. Never for Carida.”

“Carida is dead! When will you accept that?”

“Not until her people do,” she whispered, Alei’s words in mind.

“Then I will keep asking. Every time I see you. Until your people give you no choice.” He left with a sneer.

She glanced at the Caridan bloodflower in front of her—mocking her. She had denied her isolation once, had lost that denial to war, and Gavrisom was only another reason that she would forever be alone.

Notes on the timeframe: These drabbles take place in about 40 ABY, just before the Prologue of The Face of a Warrior. The fourth drabble is a flackback to 20 ABY--almost a decade after Carida was destroyed.

Week 2: Escape to Flareship
Impossible
“No!” Luke snapped, red-faced. “We’re not leaving!”

“Thiz one does not enjoy running away, either,” Saba hissed, “but thiz one understands what is best.”

“We need to fix this problem,” Luke said firmly. “If we go into hiding, that becomes impossible.”

Tionne regarded him through half-closed eyes. “And what of the younglings, Master Skywalker?” she asked. “Are you asking them to sacrifice themselves as well?”

Luke stared at her, wide-eyed, and shook his head.

“Darth Caedus can find the younglings while they are here,” Tionne pressed. “I, for one, would not like to see a repeat of Anakin Skywalker’s massacre.”

Unlikely
“We’re going to stay,” Tiraku said, his face hard and angry.

“No!” Kaethe cried. “They wouldn’t do that to us!”

“The Masters want to leave,” he admitted, “but Master Skywalker wants to stay.”

“What about us?” Kaethe asked, horrified.

Tiraku stared straight at her. “We learn to fight,” he said.

Kaethe started crying. “I wanted to be a healer, not a killer,” she sobbed. “How can we pull this off? It’s unlikely the Masters won’t find out.”

Tiraku shrugged. “We keep going as long as we can. And we hope that we stay alive long enough to make a difference.”

Reasonable
“What was that about, Luke?” Leia asked sharply the moment the meeting ended and she was allowed inside.

He turned to face her, looking worn and haggard. “We’re staying.”

“Luke, why?” she whispered. “We can’t possibly do anything right now.”

“We can’t just abandon the Galactic Alliance, Leia,” Luke said, his voice breaking. “Not when it has no chance of keeping Darth Caedus at bay.”

“So you’re going to abandon all the younglings? The padawans?” Leia snapped. “Luke, look at me. It’s the only reasonable thing to do. You can’t keep pushing Jaina like this. She has to be ready.”

Probable
“Well?” Kaethe demanded. “Are you going to help us or not?”

Kyp didn’t answer, but continued to gaze at both her and Tiraku. “Why?” he finally asked.

“Because we’d like to be able to do something,” Tiraku added in a low undertone.

Frustration swept across Kyp’s features for a moment. “Then think first!” he snapped. “Think about how you can help without fighting, or how you can prevent someone’s death, not cause it!”

“But—”

Kyp turned and headed for the door. “For your information,” he said, “we’ve already started building Flareship. It’ll probably be ready in a few weeks.”

Definite
Leia moved up beside him, laying a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry, Luke,” she whispered. “I knew that you wanted to stay.”

He rubbed a hand across his face. “You were right, Leia,” he said heavily. “We had to leave.”

She looked at him, concern crossing her features. “Then don’t think of it as leaving,” she suggested. “Think of it as regrouping. No commander can hope to win every battle. You win when you can and retreat when you can’t.”

He nodded, moving away from the transparisteel and walking besides Leia. “Once we’re ready, we’ll be back,” he agreed.

Notes on the timeframe: These drabbles take place in about 41 ABY, between the Prologue and Chapter One of The Face of a Warrior.

I'll admit that I've never read any of the Mando-centered books, and I barely skimmed through the Fett sections of LOTF, but here's my attempt...

Week 3: Jaina on Mandalore
Truth
“Why are you here?”

“What do you think?” Jaina snapped.

Fett kept firing his lasers at her.

“Sithspit!” she yelled, pulling away from a volley. “Just let me land!”

She heard his chuckle over the comm. “Tell me why you’re here, and then we’ll land,” he ordered.

“You already know,” Jaina shot back. “The sooner we land, the sooner we can get this over with.”

“Then?”

She sighed, wearily acknowledging that the period where she could hide from her destiny had long passed. Now, she had to be willing to admit the truth.

“Teach me how to kill my brother.”

Trust
“Just grab the line so that we can get out of here!” he yelled.

“Not likely,” she muttered. She ignored the rope that Fett dangled over the cliff, and instead used the Force to herself scrabble upwards.

When she finally reached the ledge where he was standing, Fett rolled his eyes. “If you’re going to do that when you go after your brother, I may as well give up now.”

“Do what?” she asked innocently.

“Not trust anybody to watch your back.” Fett motioned behind her.

A series of X-wings flew towards them, shooting laser fire towards their position.

“Oops.”

Honor
“Good job,” Fett said curtly.

“Good job?” Jaina repeated, staring incredulously at him. “I killed people when I could have saved him.”

“This is war, Solo.” He moved towards the door to his room as if that was the end of the discussion.

“I’m not going to do that!” she yelled. “It’s not honorable. They—they deserve a normal death.”

“Do you really think that they care whether it’s your brother’s lightsaber that kills you, or whether it’s your own?” Fett asked. “Death is death. They’re dead. You’re alive. Stop dwelling.”

The door slid shut behind him with a click.

Loyalty
“I’ve been here for more than half a year already. I have to leave.”

Fett stared at her with an impenetrable expression. “You’ve not ready,” he said flatly.

“I’m not ready, or you’re not ready to give up someone who can actually help you out on missions?”

He sighed. “We’ve already agreed on this.”

“You mean that you’ve agreed to this. I’m a bit more thickheaded.”

“You’re not ready,” he repeated.

“I can’t just stay here and abandon everyone!”

Fett looked at her as if she had gone insane. “They’re in hiding.”

“One more week,” she said, before stalking away.

Love
“Well?” Jaina demanded. “Am I ready or not?”

Fett’s lips twitched. “You tell me.”

She glared at him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Are you ready?” Fett asked placidly.

His manner reminded her of Uncle Luke, triggering a series of memories that she had repressed while on Mandalore. She remembered her parents, as well as Ben, Luke, and Mara. She remembered the friends that would help her, the ones who had died for her, and who her brother used to be. She remembered—

“I love—” And then she understood the answer—her own answer. “Now I know I’m ready.”

Notes on the timeframe: These drabbled take place around 41 ABY, during the 6 months that Jaina is on Mandalore (between the Prologue and Chapter One of The Face of a Warrior

Very interesting thinking . This depicts a Fett-Jaina relationship much less Fett-worshiping (always a good thing), but more of a mutual respect. I have to wonder what she 'loves' in the last one though. Who Jacen used to be?

Thanks! That last "loves" refers to the people she thought of: the people that she's fighting for.

Thanks again for reading!

Week 4 drabbles will go up sometime later tonight.

Gaze
His first glimpse of the rumored Galactic Alliance ambassador was a flash of white—a swirl of delicate fabric as she stepped from her ship into a waiting speeder. From his position on the walkway on one of the upper levels, she looked so immaterial, as if she could be blown into the ice storm outside by the slightest breeze.

He had not expected her to survive more than a few hours in the torrent of Chiss politics.

Nevertheless, after she had left, he found himself gazing at the spot where she had stood, unable to tear his eyes away.

Wink
A figure swathed in a gauzy blue dress, she had finished talking to his father and turned around just as he held out a hand.

“May I have this dance?” he asked.

Dancing with mirth, her light blue eyes caught his gaze and she winked.

“Davin,” Soontir spoke hurriedly, a note of reprimand in his voice. “I don’t think—”

“That would be fine, Commander,” she cut in, her voice nearing a warm purr.

When he felt her palm, perfectly smooth but frozen, slide into his, he stopped worrying about what his father would say to him the next day.

Distance
“Stay away from the Galactic Alliance ambassador!” Soontir yelled, waking Davin up.

Davin sat up and rolled his eyes at his father. “It was just a dance. And I have two more hours until I’m on duty.”

That seems difficult to believe, given how you were acting last night.”

Davin sighed. “It was just a dance,” he repeated, even though he knew he was lying. “It was nice to be able to dance with someone who isn’t a foot taller than I am.”

His father regarded him with skepticism. “You don’t what you’re getting into,” he pressed. “Keep your distance.”

Cold as Ice
“Aren’t you cold?” he asked.

Engrossed in whatever she was reading on her datapad, she ignored his question.

“Well?” Davin prodded. “Aren’t you?”

While he was bundled into a warm jacket and parka, she only had on a light jacket over navy pants and flight boots.

“You’re supposed to be taking me to meet the representatives from the Ruling Families, aren’t you?”

He glanced at her. “Well, yes…”

“Then stop talking and drive. And don’t crash into that speeder on your left.”

He swerved just in time and shook his head, laughing. She was cold, all right—cold as ice.

Eternal Flame
She gripped the walkway railing—in fact, the same one where Davin Fel had stood two years ago and seen her.

“I’m sorry,” Soontir Fel murmured, coming up from behind and dropping a hand hard on her shoulder. “I know that he proposed to you before he left.”

She doubted the sincerity of Soontir’s comment , but didn’t bother shake off his hand. Aula tore a white-knuckled hand away from the railing fisted away a few stubborn tears. “What is he called?” she demanded. “What will he be known as?”

Soontir’s voice remained grave. “Torku k’rat,” he said.

Eternal Flame.

Notes on the timeframe:"Gaze" takes place in 21 ABY, when Aula first arrives as a secret ambassador to the Chiss. "Wink" takes place a few days later, and "Distance" the day after "Wink." "Cold as Ice" happens several months after "Distance," and "Eternal Flame" in in 23 ABY, just after Davin Fel's death (I've changed this date slightly from canon to make it fit with the rest of my story.)

Eternal Flame was my favorite. Sad but powerful.

In my mind, the story of Aula and Davin is ultimately a tragedy (not only because of his...well...death, but due to what happens later in the war against Caedus)

And all this is from your story?
Dang it -- I'm missing out, aren't I?

The last set of drabbles were outside the timeless of The Face of a Warrior. However, I'm also planning another story, this time Aulani-centric, that spans from the destruction of Carida to her death (including the events of FoaW, but with a different focus).

Wonderful set!

Thanks!

Hmmm...I seem to be very behind on drabbles right now. Hopefully, writing during a six-hour bus ride later this week should remedy that. happy

Week 5: The Fel Family
Steps
“Jag will be going to the Academy next week,” Soontir said, stepping forward and placing his hands on her shoulders.

She shrugged his hands off and turned around to face him. “Soontir!” she hissed. “Is this really necessary? We’ve already given them two children.”

“Syal,” he murmured, “you know that Jag wants this.”

“I also know that he doesn’t want to be dead!”

Her outburst was met with silence.

“It’s the price of living under the Chiss,” Soontir whispered. “Our children’s lives for our family’s safety.”

“It is really worth it?” she asked, sobbing.

Soontir had no answer for her.

Stride
“Mother!”

Her heart stopped at the call and she rushed down the stairs, only to find Jagged, looking safe and perfectly whole, waiting for her at the bottom.

“Mother,” he repeated, and she didn’t miss the flash of excitement across his face.

She swept him into a hug. “Does this mean that you’ll be returning home now?” Syal asked hopefully.

For the briefest moment, disappointment shone from his features. Then, his expression shut down completely. “I’ve been given my own clawcraft,” he said in a flat tone.

“Oh, Jagged.” How long before you’re killed in one of the Chiss’ wars?

Stumble
“He crashed.” Without her having noticed his entrance, Soontir now stood in the doorway to the kitchen, looking thoroughly disgruntled.

“Again?” she asked, turning to face him only to see that, this time, Jag was not lurking in the background. “Well? Where is he?”

Soontir let out a disgusted snort. “He has a cut on his forehead and they’re keeping him to check for a concussion.”

“But he’s alright?” She had grown too used to hearing of injuries from Jag’s escapes.

Grudging admiration shone through Soontir’s annoyance. “He’s fine. And now Shawnkyr has handed over her position as cadet commander.”

Leap
“Mother! I’ve been given command of a squadron.”

Her heart stopped and she turned around to glare at him. “Jagged!”

His face fell at her tone, but, this time, she couldn’t care—not after Davin.

“Give it back!” she sobbed. “I don’t care how: just give it back!”

“Mother!” He sounded both confused and mortified.

Soontir came through the front door accompanied by a gust of freezing air. As he caught sight of the scene, he locked eyes with Jag and tilted his head towards the stairs. Silently, Jag left the room.

“Syal,” Soontir whispered, pulling her into an embrace.

Fall
She stood with her cheek pressed against the window and stared into the ice storm raging outside. Even with the thick glass, she could feel the cold of the outside touching her check.

Jagged had left.

She could only be glad that Wynssa, as of yet, had shown little interest in following the career path of her other children. Although she could see that Wyn, too, wished to leave the Chiss, at least her only remaining daughter would not be flying straight into a maelstrom of danger when she did so.

Jagged, she was afraid, was already lost to her.

Notes on the Timeframe: "Steps" takes place in 18 ABY, with "Stride" a year later. "Stumble" takes place shortly after "Stride," during Red Sky, Blue Flame. Then, "Leap" takes place in 23 ABY, several months after Davin's death, and "Fall" takes places in 25 ABY, just before the Battle of Ithor.

Sorry it's taken me forever to comment. I loved these sets, though. Each one of them.
The fear the parents have for their children, Jag's happiness at finally doing what he wants to do but having to deal with his fearful mother as well.

You capture their feelings perfectly.

The Fel family is one of my favorite subjects to write about, and with all the missing details about the children's lives, it's a lot of fun to work on filling in the gaps!

Wonderful job!
Keep up the good work.

Thanks again! I'm afraid that I've been rather remiss in my drabble-writing, but I'll try to get back to here once I finish the next chapter of The Face of a Warrior.
