Luke nodded. “Well, the bulkhead and force fields will hold them in until Rogue Fleet gets here in...” He cocked his eyebrow as he did a few mental calculations. “An hour and forty minutes.”

Rather an optimistic estimate, Luke! tongue Sheesh! Lumiya found a way to completely reverse Luke's good work very quickly!

The fighting scenes were very good. I liked that both Luke and Mara didn't enjoy killing the stormtroopers and that they kept trying to get them to surrender. At least a few were smart enough to take them up on their offer. Wow! Just 17! Poor kids!

I'm continuing to enjoy Artoo and his dialogue! wink Nice job, Striker! I'm on to read the next installment!

Yay!!! Wedge and the Rogues to the rescue! It sounds like Luke and Mara really needed the help with all of those Stormtrooper reinforcements showing up. As Mara said, they were "...trying to stop a flood with a bucket and a pump."

She was right: They did have to go after Lumiya. Hmmm... But why doesn't Luke think he can face her alone?? Luckily, Mara is there to support him!

Artoo beeped and whistled. [Give me a minute-and I mean that literally. These viruses are peskier than Threepio after taking in high-grade oil.].

LOL! Absolutely LOVED this, Striker!!!! Very cute!

A certain member of Rogue Squadron was able to provide us with a shorter route. I think you might know her.”

Jaina, I'm assuming?

And Wedge certainly made fast work of Lumiya's fleet! Good for him! He scared them silly! happy

Nice installment, Striker!

Just finished "Dual Duel". I liked that it was short. It would have seemed that Luke and Mara were too weak if it took the two of them a long time to dispatch Lumiya. It was good that it was Mara who dealt the final blow. And, yes, while Luke would like to save everyone, it's not always possible.

I was glad that the stormtroopers surrendered though. There was no need for them to lose their lives for nothing.

Great job, Striker!

Ouch for the dust, too.

Thanks. happy Oh, some good news: we had a fire in the valley here on monday (which... yikes) which claimed 105 acres and a chicken coop, but no houses. Also, saw some CAL FIRE guys earlier and they were all "nope, no fires today." (Us having a fire here is a bad thing, what with it being so dry and all, but it didn't last weeks and was kinda funny when I finally got around to reading the newspaper article. Kinda.)

“Sorry for the wait,” he said, kissing her on the cheek.

Mara shrugged as the stormtroopers appeared. “I can see you were busy,” she said before readying herself.

Loved this moment, here... some tenderness amid that action!

“Did I win??”

Depends... in which way does she mean? (No, by the broad definition she didn't, but the wince-worthyness of that question... wow...)

And, while Shira did indeed not win, nor did Luke and Mara, really. (Was it the only way for it to end? Yes and no... Lumiya wasn't going to surrender and Luke's right.)

Well done and good post. happy

Interesting. As history has let us know, a fighting force is in a desperate position when they have to use children as soldiers. I did find Mara's reaction unusual when she took out Lumiya. Especially at how upset Luke was about it. I always thought that Mara had many questions about the emotional relationship between Luke and Lumiya. To me, an emotional relationship between two Force strong individuals could be much deeper then a physical one. Yet... though in that physical one too and just listen to the birdies sing! whistling Now off to Naboo. Great job and thanks. rose

Ouch, Lumiya really didn't have a chance there, did she? Not against an ex-collegue AND a Jedi Master... I suppose that Mara was sorry for Luke's sake, not because she had to kill. That's pretty sweet of her, really. I'm glad "even Luke" could see the necessity of it. tongue
Looking forward to see ´what they will find on Naboo. happy

Liz-He knows it in his head. His heart, however... lol, yeah. Now onto Naboo... next week. wink Hey, gotta wrap up this up first. tongue

Proof-lol, thanks. Lumiya was just fixated on that word. Don't know why. laugh My duels are actually a lot longer, usually. Any time Tenel Ka fights, for instance... Glad I could inspire. happy

Jade_eyes-Yeah, they didn't want to, but knew they had to. Although i wouldn't say they have no tinges of darkness. And yeah, to Naboo... in a bit. wink

Windy-yeah, she did. And of course' Luke's optimistic. Remember his rescue of Leia in ANH? "I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you!" Ah, memories... grin *Ahem* Glad you like the fight scenes. They're a specialty of mine. wink Yeah, they needed help all right. Luke knows he can face her alone... but would like his wife's support. Yes, Jaina. wink Wedge rocks. Glad the duel was good. Yeah. Lumiya didn't have much of a chance, there.

Daena-Glad no fires around there. Guess i;m spoiled living in NH when it comes to rain. Glad you liked that moment. happy Lumiya was... kinda dying when she asked that, so might not've been too coherent.

JEDIFLY-Glad you caught that. I figured at this point in time, Lumiya's pocket fleet would be in dire straits. Luke jsut regrets not being able to save her, pretty much. Glad you liked it.

kataja-Nope, not a chance. Yeah, even Luke could see it.

Okay, a few announcements...

1. Found some cool youtube videos. thought I'd share. happy

Han Solo IS Magnum PI!

Luke as Macgyver

2. Yes, next week they go to Naboo. I have to do some research on the planet since I know little beyond what we saw in the PT. That, and I have to get enough snark together for when Mara learns Padme was elected queen at age 14. And yes, that least sentence is serious. happy

3. Some of you... might not like who I've paired Jaina with. Sorry, but I am a diehard J/Zer. I've tried to mitigate it as much as possible, though... and at least she's not stringing three guys out like in canon. tongue

Here we go!

*****
One hour later
Wedge slowly walked along the command walkway in the Eclipse's bridge, looking from side to side down into the crew pits. “I still don't believe it,” he admitted. He looked back to Luke and Mara as they stood near the aft of the bridge. “And this was built for you?”

Luke nodded. His arms were crossed in front and he was looking down at the deck. “Vader-Anakin had it constructed for me, to fight Palpatine and take control of the Empire.” He shook his head and looked up, locking eyes with Wedge. “It's a gift of love, from a Dark Lord of the Sith.”

Mara placed a hand on Luke's shoulder and Luke covered it with his. “His heart was... in the right place,” she said. “But it's a superweapon, and illegal. Such a thing as this should not exist.”

Wedge nodded. He motioned to the front of the bridge. “The nearest star is eleven light-years away. If I strip out all nonessential personnel from Rogue Fleet we just might be able to get this thing up and running for its final voyage.” He scratched the back of his head. “You should've seen the state of the engine room. The chief engineer for the Lusankya nearly had a coronary in both hearts.”

Luke finally cracked a smile. He stood up straight and walked a few paces up to his old friend. “Thanks,” he said, extending his hand. “I owe you.”

Wedge accepted the hand and smiled. “Considering how many times we've saved each other's lives, I'm not sure who's got the higher amount of life-saving moments. Besides, you should thank Jaina when you get a chance to see her.”

Mara sighed. “We've been so busy getting all of this organized and dealing with the surrendered stormtroopers we haven't even had a chance to see our niece.” She walked up to Luke and swatted him lightly on the head. “We should make time for her before she goes gallivanting across the galaxy and we can't see her for another six months or so!”

Luke grimaced slightly. “Yes, Mara.” He let out a sigh. “Actually, you're right. Wedge?”

Wedge's smile turned into a grin. “Go ahead, you two. Jaina should still be on the ship... although you'd probably know better than I.”

Luke's eyes half-closed and he nodded. “Right in the auxiliary hangar bay you landed in. And now she knows we know where she is and is expecting us.” He tossed Wedge a salute before he and Mara walked off to the aft turbolifts.

The pair entered a car and felt their stomachs lurch slightly as the car moved down and forward. “The thing's repulsorlifts need fine-tuning,” Luke commented, looking unsettled.

“Just a bit,” Mara said. She looked to Luke and sighed. “You couldn't save her. You know that, so why are you beating yourself up over it?”

The car slowed down and stopped, allowing them to exit and begin walking down one of the endless kilometers of corridors to one of the auxiliary hangars, the site where Wedge and his team landed. “I know it in my head,” Luke said, pointing to his temple. His finger then strayed to his chest. “But in my heart...”

“You wonder if there was something else you could've done,” Mara said. The two slowed down their gait and Mara grabbed Luke's forearm. “I'd say focus on the ones you did Save, but you've got too big a conscience for that.”

A sad smile crossed Luke's face. “Anakin, Dev, Flint, Kam, Kyp, Mara...” He turned just before they reached the door to the hangar and kissed Mara on the lips, letting the touch linger there for a moment and drinking in her scent. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” Mara said. She stepped forward and the doors slid open. She smiled as she spotted a young woman in an orange flightsuit near an X-wing. “Hey, Jaina!” she shouted, waving with her free hand.

Captain Jaina Solo glanced up from a datapad. “Hey!” she shouted back. She walked over even as Mara and Luke crossed the distance. “I'm so glad to see you!” she exclaimed, hugging them both.

Mara returned the hug and stepped back, looking Jaina over. My height? She thought. When did she get so big? “Did you get promoted last time we saw you?”

Jaina's cheeks colored slightly. She fingered the captain's bars on her collar. “I also moved up to Rogue Five,” she said, her feet shuffling.

Luke barked a laugh. "An excellent position.” He paused before continuing. “And an excellent job with getting here early, too.”

Jaina shrugged. “I knew you and Aunt Mara would need help,” she said. She looked around the hangar. “What's the plan with this thing, anyway?”

“Dump it into the nearest sun,” Luke commented. He suddenly glanced up as he felt another person approaching. A younger man with a scar running down the right side of his face walked up. “Hello... Jag?”

Jagged Fel nodded to Luke. “Yes. We met once about two years ago during a Rogue Squadron reunion.” He pulled off a glove before extending his hand. “An honor to formally meet you, sir.”

Luke shook his hand and waved him off. “No 'sir' around me, Jag. I haven't been in the Defense Force since before you and Jaina were born.”

A faint smile crossed Jag's otherwise stony features. He looked to Jaina. “I do apologize for interrupting your moment with your family, but I thought you'd like to know we fly back in an hour.”

Jaina nodded. “Thanks.” She suddenly snapped her finger. “Oh! Zekk wanted me to tell you he got that bottle of Chandrilan wine you wanted. Next time you meet up, he'll hand it right off to you.”

Jag's smile widened and blossomed into a full-fledged grin. “He remembered,” he half-whispered. He schooled his face back into a more serious mien and nodded. “ I'll be sure to contact him tonight and thank him. And thank you for passing the information on to me.” He tipped his head to her and then to Mara and Luke. “A pleasure seeing you.”

“Give my regards to Soontir,” Luke said as Jag walked off.

“He's cute,” Mara said as soon as Jag was out of earshot. “Are you two dating, Jaina? I bet Leia would love him.”

Jaina snorted. “Two problems with that, Aunt Mara. I'm engaged to Zekk, and he's married to fellow Rogue Shawnkyr. Other than that...” She rolled her eyes and chuckled. “Oh, and Zekk and Jag are best buddies, too boot.”

Mara nodded, smirking. “I suppose.”

Jaina shrugged before speaking again. “So... what the kriff's been going on?” she asked, leaning forward. “I had barely enough time to get Cappie from home and for Mom and Dad to tell me you two were tracking down something concerning Anakin Skywalker. I get back to the Lusankya and suddenly we're shipping out to here!” She placed her hands on her hips. “So, what gives?”

Luke and Mara exchanged a glance. “It's a... long story,” he said. “But we do seem to have the time.”
*****
Three hours later, the Jade Saber's cockpit
Luke strained his eyes, staring at the distant sun known as GCS-1138. Even with the Force, he could barely pick out the tiny speck of the Eclipse as it plunged into the sun on its final flight.

Mara looked to him. She took a sip of water before speaking. “Not to be too pessimistic, but are you sure that'll destroy it?”

Luke nodded. “It's not the Sun Crusher, if that's what you mean. The hull might be a half-kilometer thick in some places, but it's still durasteel. It'll melt.”

Minutes passed before Luke spoke again. “It's after the mission,” he said.

Mara nodded. She looked over her shoulder at Artoo as he was plugged into the astromech station. “Artoo, can you handle things for a bit?”

Artoo's dome swiveled and his photo-receptor brightened. [All set, Mara. Why don't you and Luke go... talk.]

Mara eyed him as she and Luke unbuckled their crash webbing and left the cockpit. A few minutes later, they were sitting on the couch in the main cabin. Luke leaned forward, resting his arms on his thighs. “I don't know what turned Father to the Dark Side. I might find out on Naboo, or I might not.” He leaned back against the cushion, his left arm snaking behind Mara's head and pulling her in for a kiss. He broke it off after about thirty seconds. “I do know this, though. I am a lot more open to the idea of starting a family with you, Mara. And I'm sorry for putting it off for so long.”

Mara took Luke's right hand and squeezed it. “I'm sorry for putting too much pressure on you,” she said. “I saw Han and Leia with their kids, Mirax and Corran and Wedge and Iella and Corran with theirs and I just felt... empty inside, like I was missing out on something wonderful.”

Luke reached up and wiped a tear from Mara's cheek. “I should've been more sensitive to your needs Mara.”

Mara barked a laugh and grabbed Luke's hand before he was able to pull it away. “And I should've been more sensitive to your doubts.” A sigh escaped her lips. “So, we're both sorry and we both forgive each other. Where does that leave us?”

Luke swallowed, feeling quite closed off in the suddenly cramped cabin. “Well, there's no reason to put off going to Naboo, but that could take days or... weeks...”

Mara looked up and spoke. “Artoo, plot a course to the Naboo System, please. How long to get there at or current position?”

There was a moment of silence before Artoo's beeps and whistles came over the embedded speakers. [Fifteen days on standard routes, but I could cut it down to ten if you want.]

Luke coughed for a moment before finding his voice. “Standard routes will be fine, Artoo. Please call Wedge and tell him we'll be heading that-MPPH!” His words were swallowed when Mara grabbed him and pulled him in for a soul-searing kiss. Time slowed to a crawl as their bond in the Force blazed...

Mara pulled away, letting out a breath. “Well... fifteen days alone on our way to Naboo. How will we pass the time?” she asked, winking.

A rather large grin crossed Luke's mouth as he took Mara's hand and pulled her in close. “I can think of a way or two,” he said before their lips crushed together again...

Nice exchanges in this chapter; first the Wedge + Luke (always a pleasure!), then the L&M + Jaina (I've laways prferred pilot-Jaina to Jedi-Jaina, and I liked the calm you gave her here) and finally: the lovely glimt of Luke and Mara more private! wink Do you have to you hurry off to Naboo? batting (I'm always a sucker for nice Luke+Mara interaction)
Lovely update!

Our no rain thing out here has to do with the Pacific high settling in and not leaving for three to five months...

“You should've seen the state of the engine room. The chief engineer for the Lusankya nearly had a coronary in both hearts.”

Poor guy... laugh

“You couldn't save her. You know that, so why are you beating yourself up over it?”

Because he's Luke. That's what Luke does. Even if he couldn't save her, he still wanted to do so.

“Anakin, Dev, Flint, Kam, Kyp, Mara...”

It's really too bad that Brakiss was not among those, isn't it?

“Two problems with that, Aunt Mara. I'm engaged to Zekk, and he's married to fellow Rogue Shawnkyr. Other than that...” She rolled her eyes and chuckled. “Oh, and Zekk and Jag are best buddies, to boot.”

Liked this... and you didn't resort to Jag torture. (Sailor Senshi version one, I think it was...) Cool.

I don't think they'll have any problems passing the time, either... love

I bet some of the politicians back in the Senate would of loved to of gotten ahold of that ship. Hope that Sun did take care of it. So did I understand correctly that Mara is going to have issues with a 14 year old elected queen? Not only will going to Naboo be interesting of Luke but I bet for Mara learning about dear old Palpatine will be an eye opener too. I bet L/M will find some fun things to do for the 15 days to Naboo. Proubly not to much of that..."Are we there yet?". Great job and thanks. rose

FireJade-Welcome and thank you. happy Would you like PMs when I update? Glad you liked the mystery of it. I don't know if he was a visionary, wink but I figure most Force-sensitives would have flashes or something. How'd Lumiya find out about it? Hmm... *Dodges plot hole* tongue Thank you for reading.

kataja-Thanks. happy I like Wedge. He's cool and possibly the best fighter pilot in history. I prefer her being a pilot, too. And no, they don't have to hurry off. grin

Jade_eyes-lol, glad you liked the mush. happy Glad you also liked their convo.

Daena-That's a long-lasting high... shock Yeah, poor engineer. wink Precisely. That's Luke for you. "I've got to save you." Yeah, too bad Brakiss isn't there. No Jag torture from me anymore. happy

JEDIFLY-They would. but it's sunk. wink She'll have issues, that's for sure. Although I might channel a bit with her. tongue No, not much 'are we there yet?' laugh

Sorry for the short post. sad DRL is kicking my butt this week. Longer next week, hopefully.

Here we go!

*****
Fifteen days later
Luke stretched a bit as he lay in bed. He glanced to the side at the sleeping form of Mara, her head resting on his chest. A feeling of utter contentment washed over the Jedi Master as aches and pains washed away. I needed this, he admitted.

Mara stirred and her head rose, long reddish hair hanging over her eyes. She locked eyes with Luke and half-smiled. “Morning, Farmboy...” she muttered. She ran her hands through her hair and brushed it out of her eyes. “What time is it?”

Luke glanced to the stand next to their bed and at the chronometer mounted there. “0600 hours.” He tousled her already-messy hair a bit. “Today's the day.”

Mara nodded. “Gonna get up?”

Luke shrugged. “Not sure. I'm feeling quite comfortable here at the moment.” A sly grin crossed his face. “What about you?”

An equally-sly grin appeared on his wife's face. “Very comfortable, Luke.” She locked eyes with her husband. “But it's going to get somewhat awkward soon.”

The smile fell away from Luke's face. “We'll be coming out of hyperspace soon,” he commented. His head fell back and hit the pillow. “Naboo looks like a nice place,” Luke said, staring up at the ceiling. “I wonder what my mother did there. I wonder if I've got relatives still living there.”

Mara rolled over onto her back and sat up. She looked down at Luke and half-smiled. “We'll find out, Luke.” She patted him on the shoulder. “Ready to start the day?”

Luke swung his legs around and onto the carpeted deck plating, at once glad for the retrofit to the cabin. He stood up and walked into the refresher while Mara shuffled over and got to her feet. Luke emerged in clean clothes, shaved and cleaned up. “Men,” Mara muttered, rolling her eyes.

Luke looked himself over. “But I'm not wearing black,” he remarked, looking over his white shirt and light-blue pants. “I thought it was rather nice.”

Mara groaned as she walked over to the refresher, emerging a few minutes later. The pair made their way to the cockpit and took their seats. Mara flipped a few switches and the control console lit up. She glanced over her right shoulder at the astromech station and Artoo. “Any problems?” she asked, putting her headset on.

Artoo's dome swiveled around and he whistled. [Not a one, Mara. Good timing, too We'll be reverting to realspace inside of a minute.]

Mara nodded. She reached out and squeezed Luke's hand. “It'll be all right,” she assured him. She waited until he returned the squeeze before letting go and gripping a lever. “In three, two, one...”

She pulled down and the reddish haze outside the viewport broke apart into millions of lines. The lines shortened, each one turning into a star. A silver crescent hung near the center of the viewport; Naboo, lit by its sun and also cast in shadow.

Mara adjusted her headset. “Should we just go in as the Jade Saber or choose an alternate ID?”

Luke rubbed his chin. “Alternate,” he finally decided. “No need to attract attention to ourselves.”

Mara nodded and powered up the comm system. “This is independent freighter... Fire Walker, requesting permission to land at... Theed Interstellar Spaceport,” she asked, dredging up the names from memory.

There was a burst of static before a male's voice came over. “”Permission granted, Fire Walker,” he said in a rather fancy accent. “Please choose your price level before landing.”

A small holo-emitter mounted in the console in front of Luke lit up, showing a list of hangars available and prices. The Jedi Master rubbed his chin. “We're not gonna need any extras. We've got enough tools to completely rebuild the ship if we have to.”

Mara arched an eyebrow. “Anticipating trouble?”

Luke started. “No, no!” he exclaimed, waving his hand. “Sorry, Mara. Just thinking out loud.” He perused the list once more. “The hundred-credit option? We can refuel and restock before leaving.”

“Good idea,” Mara said. She flipped some switches and the main viewport glowed a faint blue. “Heat shields up and braking thrusters on... now!” she said, pulling back on a lever.

The Jade Saber entered the atmosphere, the shields glowing red from friction. The gray-hulled cruiser soared over well-maintained farms and soaring mountains. Small towns and hamlets dotted the landscape, connected by roads. They eventually came to a spaceport near the edge of the largest city. Although the main landing tower was adorned with decorations and the terminal was dotted with sculptures, it was still primarily a spaceport; several pits dug in the ground and lined with ferrocrete, connected by tunnels. Large patches of duracrete paved over the land, providing space for ships too large for the hangar pits.

The Saber hovered over a pit near the outer edge of the spaceport. The main thrusters died down and repulsorlifts powered up, casting a hazy shimmer below. The cruiser dropped down, landing gear extending. The Saber touched down a second later, all three landing legs hitting the ferrocrete at the same time.

Steam and other gas vented from the ship as the main hatch unsealed and the boarding ramp extended. Luke, Mara and Artoo emerged and looked around. Luke breathed in, noting the familiar scent of lubricants, fuel and a faint whiff of ozone from welders. His keen eyes noted nothing out of place, and there were no old stains or debris around. “Very nice for a hundred credits a day,” he remarked.

Mara nodded. She placed her hands on her hips and looked around. “Maybe we should've gotten something better?” she asked, smirking.

Luke rolled his eyes. “Ha, ha.” He wore a jacket over his clothes, lightsaber concealed in a small pocket on his jacket. Mara wore a simple red skirt and matching blouse. Both projected an aura of anonymity, of being 'normal' when they were anything but. He patted a pocket on his jacket and the marriage certificate inside. “I believe we should try the central archive,” he said, rocking slightly on his heels.

Mara smiled as she sensed the nervousness wafting off of Luke. She reached out and grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly. “I think you're right,” she said. The redhead motioned with her free hand to a door set into the outer ring of the hangar. “Shall we?”

Luke nodded and returned the squeeze, letting his feelings of love and gratitude flow back to her. “We shall.”

Oh, I really, really liked this update! love Adorable slow start with Luke and Mara; you managed to set up an intimate, calm feeling here that seemed so perfectly natural, still with the upcoming mission looming ahead. I also like the "feeling" of Naboo - looking forward to see what you will do in next chapter! hugs
