Title: A New Life
Author: Ceillean
Characters: Kyp Durron, OC
Genre: Drama, Angst
Timeline: n/a
Notes: Written for the Disability Challenge.

Write a story that revolves around a child (between the ages of five and fifteen) who is blind and deaf from birth.

* You must have a way to communicate with this child that doesn't involve the Force

The following people must appear and have a major part in the story:

* Before the Saga: a young Siri Tachi and/or a young Obi-Wan Kenobi
* The Saga: EITHER Anakin Skywalker and/or Shmi Skywalker OR Han Solo
* Beyond the Saga: Kyp Durron OR Tenel Ka

The fic must have angst, but it also must end happily.

This was more complicated than I had first thought it would be. I used my OC in this story as well because it fit perfectly. She works with kids in an orphanage. It was a lot of fun to write but it got me thinking. It really did.

Hope you'll enjoy. happy

Appear the words...
Here begins a new life.

La Vita Nuova-Dante Alighieri

The Shooting Star Orphanage lay in the lower parts of Coruscant city, a tall bland building that resembled a simple slab of ugly grey rock rather than a home for the orphaned and the needy. Above the pair of double doors hung a glowing, flickering sign with the orphanage name as well as the year it was established – it was all the indication as to what this place was used for.

Jedi Master Kyp Durron stood a few feet away from the entrance atop a narrow bridge that led towards a private landing platform where he had parked his speeder. He tilted his head backward and looked up, for a moment distracted by the vehicles that flew overhead.

This is a delicate matter. It must be handled with care.

He grimaced when he remembered Master Skywalker’s words. Delicate and handle-with-care…he couldn’t help a derisive chuckle.

You’re to go in as a civilian. No Jedi robes, no lightsaber. And by no means are you to use the Force.

Kyp pursed his lips while zipping up his black long coat against the chilly wind around him.

For all intents and purposes, you are not a Jedi.

In no way was this an average mission. At first glance it seemed simple. Pick up the kid and escort the kid to Coruscant General. But there was always a catch, wasn’t there?

First off, the kids’ guardian was an old… friend.

Secondly, the kid was actually a Senator’s six year old daughter but to uphold her status in the Senate, she never officially and openly recognized the girl as her own. Hence this being a delicate matter and needing to be handled with care.

Why me? Kyp had wondered, knowing that he wouldn’t have been Luke’s first choice.

Because her guardian asked for you.

Closing his eyes for a long moment, he called on the courage to walk through those doors with the confidence he always held, yet when he thought about the woman waiting for him just a few steps away… by the Force he felt his courage waver.

Kyp took a deep breath and let it out audibly while he walked along the bridge towards the double doors. They opened with a silent swish and Kyp found himself in a brightly lit, yellow painted foyer.

A young man sat at the front desk with a kind smile on his face, watching as Kyp took a cursory look around. There were colorful handprints – small and large – all along the walls as well as holopictures of happy, smiling children. Some of the kids waved while others simply grinned or laughed.

“May I help you?”

You’re to travel anonymous. Use a name only she would know.

Kyp cleared his throat. “I’m here to see Eliziya Thompson.”

The boy nodded. “Is she expecting you?”

“Yes.”

The boy’s smile was one of kind indulgence. “I need your name, Sir.”

“Giulian.”

“Giulian…?”

“Just Giulian.”

Her younger brother no one knew about.

While the boy spoke through an intercom, Kyp took a closer look at the pictures. In the children’s eyes, he saw happiness that wasn’t so common in the average child. Those that had everything they needed and wanted lacked what these kids held in their hearts and were ready to share with the entire universe.

He was distracted by the metallic clank of a silver protocol droid shuffling its way through the hallway. Its eyes glowed a soft green as it angled its way towards Kyp with its rounded head held upward. “If you’d follow me please?”

Kyp nodded his thanks to the boy at the front desk and stuffed his hands into the pockets of his coat before following the droid down the hall. All along the walls there were more holopictures in between pink and blue handprints, five-fingered, three-fingered and even a taloned paw or two.

The droid rounded a corner and stopped in front of an open doorway that led into a small office. A desk stood underneath a window, decorated with a few plants and scattered with flimsies and lightpens. Besides two chairs, the office was otherwise empty.

The droid gave an awkward bow. “It will only be a few minutes.”

“Thank you.” Kyp said with a nod. In his opinion, any other of the Jedi Masters would have been perfect for this job. Most of them were people-persons, they didn’t lack socializing skills and they knew when to shut up. Whereas Kyp kept talking, no matter the consequences, no matter who was in earshot. It had gotten better over the years but his mouth still got him into trouble quite often.

He felt a slight flicker in the Force, a tremble that started at the tips of his finger and ran its course along his arm. Kyp turned around and faced a short woman with chocolate brown eyes, long, wavy dark hair and perfectly tanned skin. Her smile was kind and welcoming, her demeanor letting him know that she was indeed glad to see him.

And he had to admit, the feeling was mutual. He breathed in deeply and took a moment to simply look at her.

“Hello, Eliziya.” He said softly, clasping his hands together.

“Kyp.” She walked towards him and before he knew it, she was hugging him. On their own accord, his arms encircled her lithe figure. He held her close and firm, inhaling her sweet scent – she still wore the same perfume she had five years earlier. “Thank you so much for coming.”

Liz took a step back and held him at arms’ length. “I wasn’t sure if my message reached the Council on time.”

Kyp smiled. “It did. But Master Skywalker didn’t give me all the details.”

She nodded once and when she dropped her arms to her sides, Kyp felt like the warmth of her touch vanished into thin air.

“I’ll tell you everything you need to know on the way up.”

“Up?”

“She’s in her room upstairs getting ready.”

Kyp followed Liz back into the corridor. To the right were a row of lift tubes, one of them out of order. A large piece of flimsie was attached to the door, the writing that of a young child. It was barely decipherable but the meaning was obvious due to the bright red ink.

“Her name is Callisto. She’s six years old and she’s rather forthcoming, which is actually quite unusual for someone with her condition.”

They stepped onto the lift tube after Liz touched the control mechanisms with the tips of her fingers. A silver bracelet flashed around her wrist, the pendant a dark blue corusca gem. He’d given it to her as a gift a long time ago.

The fact that she still wore it made him feel…warm.

“I take it Master Skywalker informed you not to use the Force around here?”

Kyp nodded. “He didn’t explain why though.”

“We have a few Force sensitive children here. And before you say anything –“ She held up her hand as if to ward off an argument. “They’re far too young to be sent to the Academy. But whenever a Force user is around, they get edgy. To keep everything calm, I ask that no one use the Force. It’s too much of a hassle.”

“I understand.”

“I mean, I don’t want you to feel belittled or anything it’s just –“

Kyp chuckled. “I get it, Liz. It’s alright.”

She smiled with a slight blush rising into her cheeks. “The problem we have is that Callisto has to get used to you before we head over to Coruscant General. She knows she needs surgery but she’s scared.”

“Why does she need surgery?”

“She’s blind and deaf since birth. The Doctors developed an implant that should let her regain her hearing along with ocular implants so she can finally see the world around her.”

Kyp took a deep breath. “How do you communicate with her?”

The doors to the lift tube opened and Liz stepped out. “That’s the tricky part.”

***

Callisto’s room was small. There was a neatly made bed underneath a tiny window with bland covers and a single pillow; there was a small nightstand with a lamp and at the foot of the bed stood an old, wooden treasure chest. The few toys the little girl owned lay on a shelf above a dresser. There were no pictures, no drawings.
It was a very plain and sad room for a child.

Callisto sat on a stool in the corner, staring at nothing. Pale, silver eyes blindly focused on a certain point in her room. She was a pretty girl, Kyp thought. Long golden hair curled around her shoulders, her heart shaped face seemed kind and he was certain that her smile would be beautiful.

Although he doubted she smiled a lot.

If ever.

What was there to smile about when you could neither hear nor see? What was there to smile about when you couldn’t make yourself heard?

She lived in complete darkness. It was all she knew. There was never sunlight, only the warmth of something she couldn’t understand. She never saw the sun.

She could feel. But what good was feeling when you couldn’t share?

“Callisto senses our presence sometimes.” Liz said softly. “It’s said to be a heightened human sense in subjects whose sight and hearing never developed.”
“Does she even understand what’s happening?” Kyp whispered, moving closer and kneeling in front of the little girl. She swiveled her blond head towards him, as if waiting, as if trying to listen.

“I’m not sure.” Liz swallowed and made a face. “Her mother used her as a test subject, so to speak. Scientists implanted a chip in her brain when she was three. She was supposed to be able to receive information through an uplink with computer systems but it never worked. She never reacted to any of it.”

“You’re kidding.” Kyp said, not even trying to hide his shock.

“Once the surgery is done – once she can see and hear again – they’ll remove the chip and she’ll be a normal little girl.”

A deep frown appeared on Kyp’s forehead. “She is a normal little girl, Liz.”

Liz nodded once and took a deep breath. “Of course she is. I didn’t mean –“ She swallowed and slowly shook her head. “It’s just unfair that she can’t have an average life, you know?”

Kyp reached forward and gently placed his fingers atop Callisto’s tiny hand. “Who wants average?” He whispered. “She’s special.”

***

Delicate little fingers traced Kyp’s knuckles before they encircled his hand. Callisto squeezed briefly then tugged at the sleeve of his coat. Kyp leaned forward just a little and her fingers wandered up his arms until she found his face.

He smiled for her, while she moved tiny fingers along his cheeks, over his eyes and back down towards his mouth. She covered his face with her hands and then touched his hair.

“She likes you.” Liz said quietly.

“How do you know?” Kyp asked and when he moved his lips, Callisto placed the tips of her fingers against his mouth.

“She’s memorizing your features by touch. She only does this with people she’s comfortable with.”

“That’s a good thing then, right?”

“Definitely.”

***

About an hour later, they were on their way to an inconspicuous black speeder parked on the landing deck on the roof of the orphanage. Along with two security guards dressed in average civilian clothing, they looked normal enough not to cause any commotion.

Callisto held Kyp’s hand in a firm grip, trusting him completely. He made sure her path was clear, he made sure that she didn’t trip – it was definitely a challenge but he knew, deep in his heart, he couldn’t bear seeing this little girl hurt, even if it was only a tiny little scratch.

If he could, he would prevent it.

***

Coruscant General, the largest inter-species hospital on the planet, was only a few minutes away. One of the silent security guards parked the speeder in a small alcove and together they got out and shuffled towards the entrance.

Callisto wore a hood to hide her pretty face. Her mother didn’t want anyone to recognize her.

Kyp pursed his lips as he felt anger well up inside of him. All her mother thought about was herself. Callisto was all but ignored, left alone with her condition when she needed all the care in the world.

An orphanage, for Force’s sake! There was no doubt in his mind that Liz was doing a good job but Callisto needed a mother, someone to take care of her in exactly these kinds of times.

He had this sudden urge to find the Senator and knock some sense into her.

Hard.

***

“We’ll give you a few minutes to settle in and then we’ll begin with the preliminary exams.” The Doctor was nice albeit a bit distant, Kyp thought. He was an elderly human male with spiky white hair, which gave him the appearance of a mad scientist rather than a pediatrician.

Callisto seemed calm, though. She sat on the bed, holding Kyp’s hand while gently stroking his knuckles with her skinny little fingers. His heart bled for her.
Words really did fail him and that was something that rarely happened to him. Whatever forces worked the galaxy, he had to wonder why an innocent little girl had to go through all this – what did she do to deserve this?

“She’ll be alright, Kyp.” Liz said quietly from behind him.

He sighed. “I know.”

“You’re asking yourself why, aren’t you?”

It took a moment for him to answer. “Yeah.”

“Try working at an orphanage. It’s the only question that goes through your head. Eventually, you have no other choice but to accept that there is no answer.”

***

Kyp refused to believe that Callisto was charged with such a fate just for the hell of it. Of course, they didn’t have an answer. They were puny little beings in the grand scale of things but being a Jedi, believing that there was more to life than met the eye, he believed that everything happened for a reason.

No matter how unfair, how hurtful or how painful…

He chose to believe that Callisto had a great destiny to fulfill and that this was only the beginning.

After all, that which does not kill us, makes us stronger…

***

Hours went by while they waited in the almost deserted corridor. The security guards checked the area in regular intervals, pacing along the hallway silently. They merely nodded at each other once and a while.

Kyp sat next to Liz on a hard, plasteel chair with his legs stretched outward. He laid his hands atop his belly and closed his eyes, breathing in deeply yet wrinkling his nose at the antiseptic stench in the air. He didn’t much care for hospitals.

“Thank you.”

He turned towards her soft voice with raised brows. “What for?”

She shrugged, just a slight lift of her slender shoulders. “That you’re doing this. I know Master Skywalker could have found someone else and with everything that happened between us, I didn’t think –“

“I wanted to do this.”

Dark brown eyes twinkled as she smiled. “You did?”

Kyp nodded. “Yes. At least this way,” He paused for just a moment. “I didn’t need an excuse to see you again.”

***

Kyp was the first to notice Callisto had regained consciousness. The room was large with various blinking machines attached to the walls and an emergency medi-droid hooked up into a socket in the corner.

Liz sat next to the girl on a stool, holding her hand and smiling as she blinked tired eyes. There was a taught tension in the room, ready to snap at any second. Had the surgery worked? Could she see? Could she hear?

If things had gone according to plan, she would have so much to learn!

It was amazing really, if only it had worked…

“Hey there, sweetie.” Liz whispered. “How are you feeling?” Her voice was low, a whisper.

Callisto didn’t respond. She lay there with blinking eyes, staring into nothingness. Hopes began to falter. It was visible on Liz’s face, it was visible on Kyp’s face, it was visible on the Doctor’s face. Had everything been for nothing? All the pain this little girl had to endure?

Callisto took a deep breath and then she turned her head towards Liz. A single crystal tear trailed down her cheek. And then she smiled.

Her smile lit up the entire room. It was brilliant, magnificent and all-encompassing.

She squeezed Liz’s hand as she finally saw. A little laugh escaped her throat because she could finally hear.

The emotions flowing through the room were indescribable. Abilities taken for granted by the average being were a gift to this little girl. Kyp knew for certain that she would cherish it – who knew if it would last forever?

He stepped forward and her pretty, light green eyes locked onto his face. He saw gratitude there and hope.

Indeed, she was special.

Here began her new life.

And he was proud to have been a part of it.
