Okay guys... is it just me, or does the new Bond movie look pretty good? Because I sort of want to see this one.

The trailer for “Casino Royale” looks pretty good...but here's a question I have...

What was wrong with Pierce Brosnan; why did they get rid of him?

I can answer both of these rhetorical questions. I've done my fair share of research on the subject as it is something that is very important to me...(as sad as that sounds)...

There was absolutely NO reason to get rid of Pierce Brosnan. The last few films he starred in did suffer from mixed reviews some poor fan reaction and acceptance as part of the James Bond canon. A lot of the die-hard fans were turned off by the "overuse" of CGI and some of the extremely over-the-top stunts and action set pieces that turned Bond into the British version of "XXX". I myself had no problem with these stunts and set pieces; each film tries to "top" the previous entry in the series and after a while they sort of have to venture into the ultra-unrealistic to try and wow the audience. Add to that the way over-the-top finale in which Bond and Jinx battle it out with Graves and Frost on board a flaming and crashing ship and you've got what people regarded as Bond Overkill.

I think a lot of people also had issues with the fact that the plots seemed to venture further from the source material of Ian Fleming's original incarnation of Bond. Bond has over the years turned from cold-blooded assassin and sly detective/spy into a caricature of himself. He's become more of a cartoonish action hero and lost some of the edge that he originally possessed. I'm not blaming Brosnan...as an actor of great credibility and stature he could only do so much with the scripts he was given. Perhaps he should have used his star power to demand some changes made to the scripts. But knowing what I know about current producers...even that most likely wouldn't have done any good.

That brings us to the real problem behind the Bond series and the reason Pierce was summarily dumped, the producers; Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. These two wouldn't know good material if you threw it at their numb-skulls. They remind me in a lot of ways of Rick Berman, the man who steered the Star Trek franchise right into a murky wormhole of mediocrity. All three of these individuals started out as innovative creative forces who set out to make their mark and did so in a very successful way. But somewhere along the path they lost their perspective...they either forgot how to get in touch with the creative genius that got them where they were or, once the cash started rolling in they simply stopped caring and merely tried to cash in on the franchise value by merely churning out one mediocre sequel after another.

Now, don't get me wrong...as a Bond and Star Trek fan I absolutely adore each and every entry in both series. Each film has its particular style, strength and flair. But, they also have their flaws and weaknesses as well. And behind those flaws and weaknesses lies an inherent lack of understanding by the producers, in my opinion. They lost sight of what the fans wanted and tried to either reinvent the series or adapt it to today's "standards" or what today's audience "wants to see". This hurt Trek and it hurt Bond as well.

Many people that went to see the new Bond films didn't mind the changes and adaptations made to Bond. But, the core audience did mind. And a lot of critics minded as well. Bond's foothold as one of the action icons of cinema was unsteady. So, what was the answer for the producers of the Bond series? They needed to find a scapegoat and someone to put the blame on. And seeing as no one in Hollywood is ever at fault for anything...they chose to put the blame on Pierce. "He's too old." "He's asking for too much money." "He doesn't understand the vision we have for Bond."

Next thing you know..."So long, Pierce! It's been nice knowing you!" Never mind the fact that Pierce Brosnan was widely regarded by fans and critics alike as the best Bond since the original, Sean Connery. Never mind that Pierce Brosnan is one of the box-office's top draws in the U.S. and abroad. Never mind that each entry in the series grossed more money than the last and that Pierce had much to do with the financial success. Never mind that in every single poll taken just before the announcement of Daniel Craig as the new Bond...the overwhelming responses are as follows;

Who do you think should play Bond?

62% Pierce Brosnan; if it 'aint broke, don't fix it.
26% Daniel Craig; give the new guy a shot.
12% Who's Daniel Craig?

To his credit, Pierce had been saying for years that he wanted a return to the darker, more seminal roots of the Bond character. That he wanted to see a more character oriented Bond film that was more intimate in its action set pieces and saw Bond relying more on brains than brawn. Pierce knew what made Bond a worldwide icon in the first place...he knew what made Bond one of the most popular characters in film and literature. He knew why even President John F. Kennedy absolutely adored the character as did most red-blooded men. He knew what the series needed to get back to its glory; and it wasn't CGI and Vin Diesel-ish action.

Pierce was the fall guy for the Broccoli/Wilson team and Daniel Craig was ushered in as a "New Bond for a New Era". Hell, the Broccoli/Wilson team even claims to have come up with the idea for getting back to Bond's roots (as the new film is attempting to do). But, here's my problem with casting Daniel Craig as the new Bond...

1. Who the hell is Daniel Craig? I mean, I know who the guy is...and I have seen and respect his work. He is a very accomplished actor who is familiar to heavy drama ("Munich") and big-budget action blockbusters ("Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"). But, who is the guy? At least with Pierce Brosnan the series had a credible star in the title role...someone who had already carved a niche for himself in pop culture and was already a recognizable face and name that drew people to the Bond series and who attracted fans of every ilk; be they women, men, children or adults. Not much of the same can be said for Daniel Craig. He has his fans...but I'm just not sure he'll be able to handle "being" Bond, if you know what I mean.

2. Daniel Craig is blonde, stocky and, in my opinion, somewhat oafish. Bond is supposed to be tall, dark and handsome. Pierce had this look and demeanor down pat. Roger Moore was everything required to fill those attributes. George Lazenby was a nice fit. Sean Connery was created by the heavens just to set the standard. And even Timothy Dalton, despite all his weaknesses, was a great fill as tall, dark and handsome. Daniel Craig is none of those and I just can't buy him as Bond in that respect.

3. Daniel Craig is not sexy. I know, you're thinking, "Wait a second, Lito! You're a guy!" Yes, true, I am a man, and a heterosexual man at that. But I'm also comfortable enough with my sexuality that I can admit when a man has sex appeal. George Clooney; sexy. Brad Pitt; sexy. Tom Cruise; love him or hate him...he's s sexy guy. Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, Sean Connery; sexy. Daniel Craig...about as sexy as my anus. In my opinion...the character of Bond and the man playing him should be so sexy that no matter WHO is in the room at a cocktail party or casino...no matter HOW many sexy men are already inhabiting the environment...even if George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Brandon Routh are charming the panties off of women in the surrounding area...when James Bond walks into that room...the head of every heterosexual woman should turn towards him, gasp in their shock and begin to pant in anticipation, delight and desire at the mere sight of Bond. Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Sean Connery...these guys had no problem making this seem realistic. Daniel Craig? Every time I see him enter a room I have a desire to run towards him, begin applying Oxy to his pock-marked cheeks and recommend a good dermatologist and an even better plastic surgeon. "You know...you really don't HAVE to live with that nose."

4. Last but not least...Daniel Craig is simply not Pierce Brosnan. I know...this whole thing seems like a love letter to Pierce and you're probably sick of hearing it already. But, I grew up seeing him on TV on "Remington Steele". I was delighted when he finally got cast as Bond and took up the mantle of the role he was destined to play. I loved every film he was in and saw his underused potential as, quite possibly, the best Bond actor ever. If he had been given the right material, the right director and a proper respect as an actor...he could have made one of the best Bond films and even outshone Connery. But he was never given the chance and perhaps never will be again. I'm hoping that Daniel Craig will be the modern-day George Lazenby and audiences will respond with lukewarm reaction to him and boo and hiss him out of the role. Then the producers will have to beg Pierce to come back for one more fling (as they did years ago with Connery in "Diamonds Are Forever") and Pierce will make one of the greatest Bond films ever while they search for a suitable replacement. As I said before, "If it 'aint broke, don't fix it." It wasn't broken; the producers merely had their heads up their respective butts.

Will I go see the new film? I'm not sure, I'm so torn. Part of me wants to boycott it out of principle and never even watch one single frame of the film. But, on the other hand; I love the series, I love the character, I love the icon...so how could I not go see it? Two words;

Daniel Craig.

_______WOW, if that is the review for the TRAILER,
I can not imagine how big the review for the film will be:-)

but, seriously folks,

I am very much on the same page with LITO, on this one.

and would suggest that one way to top the previous BOND movie,
would be to have a better story......oh, but then LITO already
told us that recognizing a good story is not somthing that
the current BOND-FRANCHISE is very good at.

I also, like the darker side of Bond and his twisted loyalty to Great Britain,

Hopefully, there is some good music.

No John Barry, tho, they will probly use his version
of the Monty Norman theme.

Music by David Arnold (original StarGate TV-theme)

hopefully, David can come up with some new stuff
and/or have some omages to John Barry's style.

we shall see,

Ed

Well, regarding the score of the film...

David Arnold scored the last three Bond films as well;

"Tomorrow Never Dies", "The World Is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day".

When he was chosen to score his first Bond film it was because the producers and director (Roger Spottiswood) knew he was an avid fan of John Barry's scores for the series. In fact, David Arnold released a CD entitled "THE DAVID ARNOLD 007 PROJECT" featuring cover tunes of many of the most popular James Bond themes performed by some of England's top artists. David Arnold also arranged the music to make it more contemporary in feel but while also retaining the "style" and "feel" of a classic John Barry Bond score.

After he recorded that CD and released it...the producers knew he was their man to score "Tomorrow Never Dies". See, in "Goldeneye", Pierce's first Bond outing, they hired a French composer (who shall remain nameless) to score the film. The classic Bond theme was only featured once in the film and during Bond's most heroic moment (tank chase through Moscow). While the French composer's efforts to reinvent the Bond-score for a new era should be applauded and were hailed by many music and movie fans, there were also many fans and critics who compained about the style of the score and the lack of use of the Bond theme. So, the producers actually listened to the compaints and hired Arnold for a return to the more classic style of John Barry.

If you listen to the scores for the film ("TOMORROW" in particular), you'll notice a very distinct homage to Barry in David Arnold's style of composition; replying mainly on the French Horn and high register strings (violins) for a lot of the themes, writing very sweeping and grandiose themes that are highly reminiscent of Barry. There's one moment in "THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH" that absolutely SCREAMS John Barry. Bond and Elektra have just jumped off a helicopter in order to ski through the mountains and the scene is shot from a helicopter shot in a very lush and beautiful moment of photography. The music in this scene could not be more like John Barry if it tried.

As the films progressed, David Arnold incorporated more of his own style into the scores; mixing electronic and synthesizer elements to the score, laying down some pretty progressive (techno and post/rock and roll) drum tracks to accompany the music. But, even though Arnold incorporated his signature style...he also paid heed to what he and the viewers wanted to hear...c;assic James Bond scores in the vein of John Barry.

I expect nothing less from Arnold in the next film and that's one of the only things I'm actually looking forward to regarding the film's release.

To make a long story short, I am in complete agreement with you.

Pierce Brosnan was the perfect James Bond. Well, as perfect as you can get trying to fill the shoes of character who’s precedent was set by Sean Connery. Brosnan just fit the bill – he naturally looks like that kind of secret-agent-guy.

In my opinion, “Goldeneye” is one of the best Bond films ever made. It had a great actor playing the antagonist role of a 00-agent gone bad, was full of Russian espionage, had an awesome femme fatale, tanks in the streets, and an exploding pen to boot. As for Brosnan’s other films, I wasn’t a big fan of any of them. They were okay, I guess, but like you said they were all about explosions and bigger explosions. However, my problem was with the films themselves, not Brosnan’s acting.

As for this Daniel Craig fellow… ugh. One thing’s for sure, if they wanted to pick someone who would better fit Fleming’s unattractive hero, they sure got that one down. However, I don’t know if that’s the image they should shoot for. The Bond Films have a James Bond incarnation of their own, and I don’t see why they need to move away from that. The "film Bond" is tall, dark, and handsome. Daniel Craig is none of those things. He’s blonde, for the love of Q!

That’s a good analogy with Rick Berman and Star Trek. I’m a big fan of the first three series, but I don’t think I have ever managed to sit through a single episode of Voyager or Enterprise. They strayed too far from the original vision, and it just doesn’t sit too well with me. I’ll probably get around to watching all the Berman-era Trek some day, but right now there are many other franchises I’d rather indulge in.

Now about this “Casino Royal” movie; I’m going to be honest with you: I want to see it. Although I really don’t think Daniel Craig is up to the task, the trailer looks great and I’ve watched it multiple times now. Aside from the new lead role, it appears to have all the goods. Creepy villains, beautiful women, minimalist action sequences, gambling, cool weapons, more beautiful women… As much as I like Brosnan, I can’t help but admit that I’m more excited about “Casino Royal” than I was the last couple of Bond films.

In the end, James Bond is just womanizing, killing machine. We probably shouldn’t admire him anyway. Nevertheless, he’s a part of our movie heritage, and most of us love every part about him. To see him played by Daniel Craig makes my eyes roll right out of their sockets, and I’m really sad to see Brosnan nudged out of the role. But despite Craig’s appearance, I’m definitely going to give this Bond a chance. Hell, who knows, maybe he’ll shake things up a bit.

O MY GOSH is that movie funny.
The "Game" made me cry laughing. Especially at the end when Mitch got the last laugh.
And I tell ya... It really made me think twice about not leaving tip's for waiter's.
I loved the casting in this movie, well I could have done without the two white ghetto wannabes.
But all in all this movie was totally better then I thought it was going to be.

Prarie Home Companion

I've listened to the radio show all my life so the idea is special to me for them to do a movie about it. However, I must say I'm kinda dissapointed. Not in the acting, it was fantastic. Everyone was wonderful and I really did find myself laughing until I couldn't breathe but it wasn't like the show. There was no Lake Woebegone stuff, just singing and the crazy plot thing that I kinda get but kinda don't.

No new trailers. The Ghost Rider trailer is still cool a second time around. Pumped to see that even though I've never laid eyes on the comic.

The theater girls didn't know where Pirates was going to be but it sounded like Superman was at the east theater and Pirates might be on the west side. Eitherway tickets go on sale the 27th but I didn't know if that was for a midnight or not. I told them the first showing they offer I'll be there for. If it's a midnight I'll be there at 10. I <3 my some Pirates, ya'll know that.

Of course I went to see Pirates at the midnight showing. I'm just now getting to sit down and post about it. I won't post spoilers but just give you my opinion from a super fan.

The plot is much more twisted and a little more complicated this time around. They use a lot more sea lore (which I liked I think they were to afraid in the first one because of the camp factor) and I think it really works. Davey Jones was amazing. The CG and makeup elements were very good although there were times (not involved with Jones I think) that I was like "Ok even my mom and dad could tell that's CG" but whatever. Disney kinda dropped the ball but it was only a few times.

The Kraken was amazing and provided some of the craziest battle scenes. The tri-way sword fight was amazing. I didn't know who to watch and Elizabeth's reaction during the fight (her just sitting there afre a while and being like "Boys r stoopid" was funny).

Jack was Jack. I didn't think that they could top his enterence from the first one but they did. I didn't see any progression in Will's character, which was sad to me. And I don't like what they did with Elizabeth either. Hopefully she'll redeem herself in the third one because right now I don't care for her. Still <3 Kiera and am getting my hair cut like her but yeah.

Music was good, better than last time. Last time is was like Klaus could only come up with one theme and then he beat that into the ground in every track. This time Hanz Zimmer takes over (he only supervised the first one) and it's great. They keep the first theme (which I really like) but expand on it and sometimes don't use it at all shock .

I really enjoyed it. It's a great ride. There are jokes that carry over from the first one and stuff that happens that you kinda have to see the first one to get (there were times that I was the only one in the theater laughing because I used to watch the movie daily for about 3 or 4 month) but it could stand on its own. There is alot more explained (the compass that doesn't point north for one) that was interesting and a lot that was introduced that I hope will be explained.

And for those of you that check the IMDB's cast list for DMC and saw Barbosa and was like "OMG flashback time!" like I was, you are so wrong. I cried near the end (if you go and know the name of my car I think you'll see why I cry) and then at the very end was like "WTF DISNEY OMG YOU F*ING RULE!".

Go see Pirates. I'm going tomorrow (Sunday) again and plan on hitting it every weekend after it goes to $5 Club. grin

Have not seen Pirates, .....yet:-)

but am looking forward to it.

understand, that it has set an all time box office record for a single day
and an opening weekend, de-throning Spiderman!

Ed

also.....never leave your favorite film, until after the credits have played,
no matter who you are with.....we just gotta train more people, that there is
music to listen to, credits to read, and maybe more.

but, I have given up the practice of waiting around until the film starts again,
just to make sure I have seen everything:-)
