Ok, I mentioned at the last meeting that I had an idea for the Hoosier Alliance and us as Star Wars fans to share our love of Star Wars, encourage creativity and promote ourselves.
Basically, this would be a contest for kids. They would submit stories set in the Star Wars universe. Other then that, no restrictions. The best story (or stories?) we would turn into a fan comic to be published to our website and maybe other fan comic sites.
The comic would essentially be a photo comic, using action figures and easily created items, combined with lighting and good photography. Eric's son wrote a story for us to try this out on. My goal is to be able to complete the photography portion of it in about 2-3 hours, possibly before a meeting.
This is a proof of concept trial to see issues and evaluate the process. I would like to set this up for a go in June.
Please reply to this topic below if you would be willing to help in this project.
Thanks,
-RC

ok, for those interested to peruse... here is the concept story we will be working with.
Story By Sam Stuckey
Hoth:
One cold day, Luke was on patrol with his tauntaun. It began to snow very hard. Luke's tauntaun got very mad at him because he was hungry. Luke decided to turn around and head back to the base. Just before Luke reached the door ,Luke looked up on a snow pile that was 1000 feet high and standing there was a snow monster. It was short and looked like a very fat pig with lots of hair and mean looking teeth.
It ran down from the big pile of snow and tried to bite Luke's tauntaun on the leg. Luke got down and cut the snow monster in half with his light saber. The tauntaun began to eat the snow monster. That made Luke's tauntaun very happy becuase he was full. Luke took his tauntaun into the base and they both got warm. Luke had a hot cup of Java Juice and went to bed.
The End.
I think this story, while very simple, could help us examine the aspects of trying to create a program like I am thinking about. I will talk about it more in the next meeting.

This sounds great. Do you have any experience with comic book layout, RC? I don't, but I'd be willing to give it a shot if you're as clueless as I am about it.
For Sam's story, obviously we'll need as much Hoth stuff as we can get, and a Tauntaun of course. For the monster, I keep picturing one of those weird dog-pig things that the Tusken Raiders keep as pets that you see right before Anakin goes berserk in Episode II. Did they make figures of those? I'm thinking we'll also need to stick clay or paper cut-outs on action figure faces to get some emotion out of them, a la Robot Chicken. We have to have a smiling Tauntaun in there somewhere.
One of the bigger challenges is promotion for future contests if this proof-of-concept works out. How do we get a lot of entries? I know just posting flyers at the library would be a good start, and maybe submitting something to visitbloomington.com for their calendar would be a good idea. Those calendars are printed every month and put in restaurants and hotels, and every 3 months they are posted throughout downtown on kiosks. We could send entrants to a web page with all the rules and details, etc.

Ok, to be perfectly honest I only skimmed this thread once before, but after talking about it at the meeting and then reading the whole thread here... WOW, I really want to get on board with this! I think it's a wonderful idea and I'm willing to contribute any way I can. I would help organizing the comics, but I'll let you graphic design magicians handle that stuff since it's your profession. What I do have to offer is are dozens of actions figures all out of the box, hundreds of miniatures, and I can always help with the photography (although I know we have a lot of amateur photographers in the group).
I can do all of this stuff, and I'll help out with whatever is needed, but what I would most like to do is help to adapt the stories for the comics. I would love to take these short entries and write up the dialogue boxes for the characters, or type a script for the finalized version. I think we could have some really awesome entries and I'd love to get a crack at some of them.
The biggest challenge is definitely getting this idea out to the general public. We could coincide this with the release of the Clone Wars movie and that would help, but we still need to get the message out there somehow.

Yeah, coinciding with the Clone Wars release would be smart. Maybe we could narrow it down to a Clone Wars related story, so we can start planning ahead of time for all the action figures and possible sets we'll need to construct so we can assemble the comic quicker once a winner is decided.

What I would like to do, is sometime before the next meeting; get together somewhere where we can story board. We can discuss the "sets" and make a list of all we will need given the story. The story will also need to be edited slightly for the sake of presenting scenes.
Casey, No, I possess no comic experience, other than my love for the medium However, I do have some experience in story creation as I started my professional life as a 3D modeler/animator (what I actually went to school for ... a decade ago ). I think between everyone, we can come up with lots of ideas as to how we produce this comic. By produce, I mean digitally, not a physical manuscript.

At the next meeting at Casey's, I will bring items to rough out a story board. So, if you want, take some time to review the story and conjure ideas for scenes, and how to construct them.

How does everyone feel about Friday July 11th or Saturday the 12th to meet at Scotts (I think that was the name of it) to nail down a storyboard and supplies?

I am out of dates and really want to get this rolling.
Eric, do you think you could make it out for an hour or so?
At this point I am planning to on the 12th. About 4 or 5ish for about 1-2 hours. I will actually put together some story boards and edit during our lunch/dinner and establish materials.
