Hey guys (and ladies) -

I am thinking about trying to read some of the many books, and am kind of overwhelmed. Where is the best place to start?

Thanks!

J

As a side note, after researching a little I found out I (unintentionally) got married on the 25th anniversary of the release of ESB, you think that's a good omen? Hehe tongue

IMO Jess, I would start with Shadows of the Empire. It's what happens after Empire and before Jedi.
The try the Heir of the Empire series. Just my .2 worth.

The Thrawn Trilogy is a good starting place. They are probably the most popular, most read, and some of the most liked out of all the novels. A lot of people even refer to them as episodes 7, 8, and 9. Shadows of the Empire is a decent standalone, probably not the best story but it doesn't require any knowledge about the expanded universe to get into. Another pivotal series is the Jedi Academy Trilogy. Fans have a lot of mixed opinions on this trilogy, but the events are really important to the post-movie storyline. If you get through all those, I would recommend reading the X-Wing series and the New Jedi Order novels, which require a little more knowledge about the expanded universe than the previously mentioned books.

It can be overwhelming at first, looking at all the hundreds of Star Wars books out there. But really, once you get past a few of the core trilogies, a few standalones and series or two, you've already read all the awesome stuff! grin

If you're someone who really likes doing things in chronological order, then I suggest starting with the New Republic Era, set in the first years after the original trilogy. I adore The Courtship of Princess Leia, but starting with the Thrawn Trilogy is a great place as well. I'd suggest reading from there through the Callista trilogy.
