I'm trying to push my Wife's grandmother to finish the stripes down the flight suit, but it probably wont be done in time, and I kind of don't want to even bring it out until I have everything exactly right. We'll see but I'll tell ya what, when its done, I just might be the best Greedo in the US. Also the guy at the army surplus store has lenses that are going to be perfect for the mask, the only problem is they might be a bit too big. Wondering how I might be able to cut down plastic without ruining them.

Dremel

Use a very, very slow speed or the plastic will melt rather than cut. If you don't have one, you can swing by and use mine.

Here is my last costume problem. Before I attach the stripes, the color of my flight suit is what I feel to be a little too blue. It was suppose to be a light blue, but when I received it, it ended up being more of a royal blue. Does anyone know if there is any way to bleach the suit and then recolor it? It will work as is, but I want the costume to be as true to form as possible. I told my grandmother inlaw to hold off a few days to do some research.

I'm not an expert on fabrics, but dying always seems to cause problems.

What is the material that your suit is made of, Ryan?

Depending on that you might be able to use RIT color remover. It's a bit safer than just bleach.

Dyeing is tricky stuff though.

Just to let you know, RIT doesn't take all that well with polyester. The cotton will be fine, but don't expect perfect results with RIT dye and polyester. I tried dyeing some pants for a show earlier this year, and they were cotton-poly. What I desired to be red pants came out pretty much faded dark pink, and that was after SEVERAL dips in the dye vat!

You may want to consider finding some fabric paint instead. Not puffy paint or anything like that, but they actually make spray-on paint for fabrics. Ask around for jacquard paints (I think that's how its spelled).

A vvery faded light blue will also work great for this costume. I'm wondering if I washed it in one box of RIT, or continued to, I could fade it enough that it would work.......RIT won't take the color completely out correct? Maybe that would be the best plan of attack....

Adding a cup of salt to the dye bath 20 minutes before you add your fabric usually
helps the fabric retain the color. Using warm water and salt and then rinsing in cool
to cold water and only gently hand washing in icy cold water is your best course of
action when it comes to box dyes. If you use a liquid dye, you'll have even better
results, but you have to be very careful you don't end up with dark and light areas.

For an even color throughout:

1. Pre-wash your fabric with no detergents or softeners.

2. Dry well, hanging to dry is best.

3. WEAR GLOVES! Prepare your dye bath in a long wide container, like one of those
under the bed kind of totes. Mind your dye to water ratio - it can make a huge impact
on the depth and quality! Also have a large tote ready with cool to cold water handy,
as well as a large empty bucket ready to pour the leftover dye into when you're done.

4. Stir well and then lay the fabric into the bath and gently push down to get rid
of any air bubbles. Air bubbles prevent the dye from entering the fibers.

5. After about 8-10 minutes of poking at the fabric, very carefully roll the fabric
and then unroll it to it's opposite side. This further works the dye into the fibers.

6. After another 8-10 minutes roll the fabric from top to bottom, or opposite of how
you rolled it to flip it over. Slowly drain the dye into another container (those big
frosting buckets from Tops or Wegmans are perfect for this).

7. Take your rolled up fabric and gently push some of the dye out of it, never ring
it out!

8. Place the fabric into the cool/cold water and gently swish it to release the excess
dye. This will take several refills of clean water before you see the fabric rinsing
clear.

Take your time with this. This is something that can take a couple hours to do from
begining to end.

Little update on my costume
I purchased the TV room Willy Wonka goggles on e-bay and am hoping they fit perfectly (Thanks Gil). Also I just pulled my jumpsuit out of a 3 day bleach bath and it looks great so far. It will dry a little different, but it actually turned a greenish blue!!! All I have left now is the stripes on the suit and I'm ready to roll!
