Spock Days
Okay so I went to Spock Days or whatever they want to call it in Vulcan Alberta today and I have to say, not a whole lot of star wars (maybe one or two that I spotted today, the parade is tomorrow so there will be more! Too bad I refuse to go back.) but it was pretty fun up to a point, took some crazy pictures and video but oh man I was angry when we got to the dinner theatre banquet.
Okay so first off you have to shell out 30 bucks for maybe 10 dollars worth of food then they make you sit through the worst display of 'fandom' ever created in the history of Star Trek, yeah thats right even worse than a bad klingon costume. It was meant to be a musical called "Phantom of the space opera" but there was one MASSIVE problem, NONE OF THEM COULD SING! They were awful, it was truely painful and not only were they bad singers but the female lead couldn't even remember the lyrics to the songs, they had given everyone a copy of all the songs hoping people would sing along and mask how bad it was but everyone was just too disgusted to even try. It was the biggest ripoff ever, and it went on waaaaaay longer than it should have, the intermission was meant to only be 10 minutes, it lasted 30 and was still going when we walked out, unable to stand another moment of it. It was unprofessional, unrehersed, without talent or entertainment value, and it was over-priced.
If that had been a star wars con I don't think a show of similar quality would have ever taken place, the event organizers would have taken the time to take a closer look at the production and they would have rejected it straight out because to be honest, it was no great display of fandom but rather an insult to all star trek. It was pathetic and if I had been an actual star trek fan and not just there for a fun time I would have been deeply insulted by such a display.

RE: Spock Days
I remember seeing that live at Con-Version last year ("I should have thought of that ten minutes ago!"), and saw the recorded DVD at a friends place a few months later. It's pretty funny IMO. Agreed, it can be hard to hear what they're singing; but when you hear "I eat T-R-I-B-B-L-E-S" (I think that's it); to see the recording of Bill Shatner speaking "Rocket Man" through the end credits; seeing the beached, dead whale get blown up by dynamite; to hear the captain screech "IIII can't dance IIII can't sing" all add up to the humour. Remembering cues and dialogue for a performance over an hour long isn't easy; these are hobbyists, not professionals. They do have other things to do throughout the week. At the very end though, when the one gal starts belting out "Phantom of the Space Opera" based on Andrew Lloyd Webers "Phantom of the Opera", you are left in awe at her singing proficiency, and chuckling as the crew creeps up on the Space Phantom.

RE: Spock Days
I think you and I must have seen it with a different cast because none of the women in the cast could sing and aparently they were doing the "condensed" version which wasn't supposed to be as long but well, when a 10 minute intermission turns into a 30+ one its alot longer. I didn't even stay for the second half with the actual phantom of the space opera song, I just couldn't take another minute of how awful it was with no hint that it might get any better.
