It's close, but If Schumacher wins this years one (which I doubt now) he will definately be the greatest.
Still, I think he comes out on top.

Schumacher. And, IMO, it's not that close.
Although, "Mika Häkkinen" intrigues me ...

I seriously can't vote. Schumacher gets it in terms of sheer numbers, but to be honest, he's not really had much much competition over the years. Senna died before Schumacher could go properly one-on-one with him over a season, Prost and Mansell had retired, Hill wasn't a match enough for him, etc. Villeneueve was about the only person good enough to get close, but then Williams lost Renault, and then Schumi hit a bad spot and Hakkinnen won twice, then Schumacher bounced back and won 4 in a row. The only reason Alonso's winning now is because Schumi's achieved all he felt like doing, and can't be bothered to give it his max anymore.
Senna was probably the last of the true greats, but his career ended prematurely. Had he not died at Imola, he would have probably had some epic battles with Schumacher, and then we'd know the extent of Schumacher's potential.
Prost, again, was a true great, but sort of pales behind Schumi's records.
TBH, out of all those listed I'd be most inclined to vote for Fangio.

Michael Schumacher is my favourite Formula 1 driver of all time, but Mika Häkkinen is a close second. I can't wait to see what Ferrari can offer to Kimi Räikkönen.
As the suggestor of this thread I might inform that the legends in this poll are in the order of the most championships, not who is my favourite.
Michael Schumacher 7 (possibly 8 after this season, which will be his last.)
Juan Manuel Fangio 5
Alain Prost 4
Ayrton Senna 3
Nelson Piquet 3
Niki Lauda 3
Jackie Stewart 3
Jim Clark 2
Mika Häkkinen 2

I'm voting for Lauda. tThe guy nearly died, and was burned practically beyond beyond recognition, and still almost won the driver's champioship in the same year.

Ayrton Senna by a long way. Schumacher is an absolute cheat! Remember Adelaide 1994 and Jerez 1997?? Monaco this year topped it all off!
Niki Lauda is a very close second.

Just to update my previous post. Michael Schumacher didn't win his eight title.
And note to those who don't know much about Formula 1: All of these legends have now retired from Formula 1, so they can't win any Formula 1 titles anymore.

Interestingly, my pick (Lauda) picked Schumacher. Go figure.

Mario Andretti. I'm going with him, because he's one of the few Formula 1 racers that I have knowledge of.
