The force would be more useful in and out of combat. Of course it would say a lot about a person's skill and discipline if they could master a lightsaber without it.

Tough one. The Force is obviously more versatile, and I'd probably be pretty useless with a lightsaber without it. On the other hand, while the lightsaber is dangerous to the unskilled wielder, so is the Force. I have a fairly nasty temper, and I indulge in dwelling on it more than I should even if I don't actually go out and hurt people. If I could use the Force I'd probably have to become a lot more careful and mindful of my own thoughts. This would probably be good for me if it worked, mind, but I'm not sure I'd want the risk.

I'll go with the lightsaber because I don't really need or want to be a Jedi or a Sith. Too much heroism expected. I'll happily take the weapon and join the military as a crazy pilot with no skill. *kidding... sorta*.
