Mongol, simply because no one else will vote for it. If you discount the whole "I'll kill you and everyone you know if you don't surrender" thing, the Mongols were some of the most socially liberal people of their time and played no small part in dragging Western Europe out of the dark age.

Such a hard choice!!!

While I really, really, really love British history, their empire was pretty much the bad guy. Plus, the Romans are pretty cool grin

No, the Macedonian. The Ottoman Turks were later.

Right, Macendoian! It slipped my mind. Why isn't that on there? Alexander conquered 3/4 of the known world....before he was 30.

Neither are the Chinese, or the Persians, or a couple of the Indiana ones, or the Mayans, or the Incas, the the Holy Roman Empire, or the Huns, or any of a bunch of others. There just wasn't room, thus the "other" option happy

Voltaire posted:
This agglomeration which was called and which still calls itself the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.

The Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Russian, and Austrian Empires each lasted a very long time and had a huge influence; the Mongols conquered the largest contiguous empire in history and also had great influence; the French Empire(s) are noted mostly for Napoleon and his nephew; and the Spanish had pretty much the first overseas empire (perhaps the Portuguese came first).

The Chinese empires had spats of greatness, but they mostly kept to themselves. What the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs did was far surpassed by their counterparts in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Guy, which did you vote for?

And yes, the empires in South America were overshadowed, but there are records that say that one of them (the Aztecs or Mayans, I think) actually came up with the number 0 before the Indians.

And the Voltaire quote = amazing. It came up quite a bit in a European civilizations class I took a couple years ago tongue .
