I've always thought of it as a civilization, rather than an empire, grabbing a dictionary empire is defined as...
a group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government; usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom
Which doesn't apply to Egypt I don't think, to me Empires are expansionist and rule over many countries and lands, whereas that wasn't the case with Egypt, that's my take on it anyway. Though an Egyptologist would have a better answer I'm sure

Not counting the brief kingdoms my ancestors established over the many centuries, I voted Mongols. They were a fascinatingly complex example in history; not to mention the feat of stretching their authority (or at least presence) directly over land, right across an enormous portions of multiple continents of was really incredible. What other army would have fought both Samurai and Teutonic Knights?

I'll have to cast my vote with the Mongols, since they did bring about a great deal of change during their time. The fact that part of my ancestry is Mongolian has nothing to do with it whatsoever! *looks shifty*
I honestly never could stand the romans... too high and mighty for my tastes. It was good that the so-called 'barbarian' populations were the ones to get them off their high-horse!
