Welcome, to the fourth installment of The Video Game Draft. I shall be your host for this fine event.
For your reference, here are our previous drafts:
Video Game Draft Tournament
The Video Game Draft Version 2.0 Beta
The Video Game Draft Version 3.0: The Triforce of Drafts
The last draft was won by the honorable MarcusP2, and as such he is now enshrined into the Video Game Draft Hall of Fame.

Now that we have the introduction done, let me go through the basic rules of the game.
Participants
There are three different types of participants in this (and any) draft game.
1. The Commissioner That's me. It's my job to enforce the rules, update draft lists, generate matches, keep the game flowing, randomize draft lists, and basically take crap from everyone else when things don't go their way.
2. GMs It's the job of the GMs to assemble their teams, mainly through drafting, but trades and free agency can be used as well. It's also the job of the GMs to send in numbers (we'll discuss this later), and, optionally, argue as to why their character(s) should win matches.
3. Judges It's the job of the Judges to, well, judge. They decide who will win matches. They also are encouraged to provide breakdowns of teams and grades for draft picks as the drafting moves along, but this is not required.
So that's an overview, let's look at the way the draft will shake-out.
Step 1: The Draft
Once all the positions are filled, I'll randomize the draft order and post the list from which the GMs will draft their teams. There will be twelve rounds of drafting, which of course means that each team will consist of twelve characters (possibly more if team picks are selected, but we'll get to that in a second). The draft order will also reverse after each round. This is so that the people in the lower part of the first round aren't getting the shaft by giving them picks that are closer together.
Example:
Round 1
1. Team A
2. Team B
3. Team C
4. Team D
Round 2
1. Team D
2. Team C
3. Team B
4. Team A
And we'll do twelve rounds like that.
A new feature this time around will be "team picks". Team picks are multiple characters that have been grouped together into small teams and then made available to be picked. But even though there are multiple characters in one team pick, it will still only count as one of your 12 picks. So in this way, a GM could have well over 12 characters on his or her team. Team picks will always be considered as a unit and they cannot be seperated from eachother when sending in numbers.
Team picks will be highlighted in green on the draft list, and will only feature the team's designated name on the main list. A seperate list will be available below the main list that will display exactly which characters comprise every team, so you know exactly who you're picking when choosing a team pick.
But also keep in mind that just because you're getting multiple characters with one pick, it doesn't automatically make them a force to be reckoned with. Most team picks are comprised of characters that are simply not worthy of being drafted by themselves. So we throw them in with one, two or even three other characters from the same game, and there you have it. Now they're actually draftable.
STEP 2: THE MATCHUPS
Once all ten rounds of drafting are completed, I'll post the first round of matchups. Each GM's squad will face off against another GM's squad. Once the matchups are posted, I'll ask each GM to PM me a set of numbers. Basically what you do here is assign each character on your squad a number from 1 to 10, and when I randomly call, for example, the number 6, whoever you placed at number 6 will square off against whomever the opposing GM placed at number 6. Fairly simple, right?
Let's look at a hypothetical set of numbers.
Suppose you had the following team: Cloud Strife, Squall Leonhart, Samus Aran, Mega Man X, Sora, Riku, Donkey Kong, Richter Belmont, Shion Uzuki, JC Denton, Ken Masters and Liu Kang. You Could send in numbers like so:
1. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
2. Richter Belmont (Castlevania)
3. Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga)
4. Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII)
5. Mega Man X (Mega Man X)
6. Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong series)
7. Riku (Kingdom Hearts)
8. Samus Aran (Metroid Series)
9. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
10. JC Denton (Deus Ex)
That, or any order. It really is best to keep things random.
Now, you'll notice that I said that you can assign ten numbers. So why do we have twelve rounds of drafting and twelve characters per team? Simple. You have to decide which two of your characters will sit out the individual battles for that round. GMs can switch which characters they want to sit out, though. In the example above, that hypothetical GM decided to sit out Ken Masters and Liu Kang. But, after that match is over and he is facing off against a different GM, he could decide put those two characters into the match and sit out, say, JC Denton and Donkey Kong. It's up to the GM to decide which characters would serve him best in the individual battles for that round.
Not to worry, though. All twelve of your characters will participate in team battles, if that becomes necessary.
A team battle occurs if, after we get through all ten rounds of individual battles, the two squads are deadlocked at five wins apiece. The team battle will then act as a tiebreaker and the winner of that battle will win the match. And team battles are just what they sound like. The judges have to decide which team would win in an all out brawl between every character on both squads.
OPTIONAL STRATEGIES:
Here are a couple of different things that you can use (or not use) when sending in your numbers:
Trumps
A trump is when you place two characters together for a greater chance of winning their matchup. Sounds simple, right? But there's a downside. Trumping your characters together for a greater chance of success will result in an auto-loss for your squad.
Here's how it works:
Using the same team from above, you can send in your numbers like so:
1. Cloud Strife (FF VII)
2. Richter Belmont (Castlevania)
3. Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong)
4. Squall Leonhart (FF VIII)
5. Mega Man X (Mega Man X)
6. Riku (Kingdom Hearts)
7. Samus Aran (Metroid Series)
8. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
9. Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga) TRUMPED with JC Denton (Deus Ex)
10. JC Denton (Deus Ex) TRUMPED with Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga)
Now, when I call, say, number 9, both JC and Shion will face off against whomever your opponent has at number nine. Obviously, they have a greater chance of defeating whomever comes up as their opponent, but there's always the possibility that their opponent is completely out of their league. That's known as "trump busted" (not to be confused with "slump busting"). That's the risk involved with trumping.
Now, once that trump has done battle, whether they win or lose, when I call the other number the trump used (in this case 10), the team will receive an auto-loss in that spot and whomever the other team has on that number will get the win no matter what.
Now, can you use multiple trumps or even put more than two characters together in one trump? Yes, of course. You can trump your team however you see fit. Just always be aware that you will receive an auto-loss for each team member that's trumped, so don't get too carried away.
Also, team picks can be trumped just like any other picks.
Theoretically, you could send in your numbers like this:
1. Riku (Kingdom Hearts)
2. Squall Leonhart (FF VIII) TRUMPED with Cloud Strife (FF VII) and Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
3. Samus Aran (Metroid)
4. Liu Kang (Mortal Kombat) TRUMPED with Ken Masters (Street Fighter)
5. Cloud Strife (FF VII) TRUMPED with Sora (Kingdom Hearts) and Squall Leonhart (FF VIII)
6. Richter Belmont (Castlevania)
7. JC Denton (Deus Ex) TRUMPED with Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga)
8. Ken Masters (Street Fighter) TRUMPED with Liu Kang (Mortal Kombat)
9. Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga) TRUMPED with JC Denton (Deus Ex)
10. Sora (Kingdom Hearts) TRUMPED with Squall Leonhart (FF VIII) and Cloud Strife (FF VII)
Now, because this GM is using a three different trumps and one of them involves three characters, this GM will receive four auto-losses. Which numbers get the auto-losses are random, since I'll be calling out the numbers in a random order. So, if I call number 5 first, then Cloud, Sora and Squall will all do battle against whomever the opponent has at number 5, but then when I call number 2 and number 8, this team will receive an autoloss each time.
It may seem a bit complicated, but it's not that bad. At least not once you get into the game.
Preparation Time
The second of our optional strategies is known as prep time. Basically what this means is that you can assign up to three of your characters prep time when sending in your numbers. So, again, your numbers could look like this:
1. Mega Man X (Mega Man X) *prepared*
2. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
3. Cloud Strife (FF VII)
4. Ken Masters (Street Fighter)
5. Richter Belmont (Castlevania)
6. Squall Leonhart (FF VIII)
7. Samus Aran (Metroid)
8. JC Denton (Deus Ex) *prepared*
9. Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong)
10. Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga) *prepared*
Being prepared means that the character(s) to which you assign preparation time will know in advance who they are fighting, and will be given a basic file on the commonly known strengths and weaknesses of their opponent. They will have 24 hours to prepare a strategy, assemble, buy, or build weapons and armors, etc. However, some things are just common sense. Saying that, for example, Link will use his prep time to fill his bottles with fairies is a very good idea. Saying that a character will build a time machine and kill their opponent while they are on the toilet is not allowed. Obviously, some characters will benefit more from prep time than others will, but it is up to the GMs to decide who to give prep time to.
Now, I put this under optional strategies, and yes, prep time is optional. However, unlike trumping, there's no penalty for using prep time for your characters, so it's pretty much in your best interests to assign three of your characters prep time for every match. Even if you don't end up with any characters that would obviously benefit a great deal from it, you might as well give the prep time to someone. The difference might be minimal, but you never know when it could be the difference maker in a really close match.
Now, can you prep a trump? Yes, yes you can. However, prepping a trump will consume one of your preps for each member of the trumps. So instead of being able to prepare three different individual fighters for that match, you would only have the one prepared individual and a prepared two-man trump. Or, you could have just a prepared three-man trump. Again, that's completely up to the GM.
And yes, team picks can also be prepared. And unlike a proper trump, prepping a team pick will only cost you one of your preps for that round.
It's also important to note that during team battles, both teams are considered to have prep time.
Prizes and Punishments
1. The winner of this draft shall receive one week of VIPship and optional use of a special Video Game Draft winner icon. They will also be enshrined into the Video Game Draft Hall of Fame and will receive the first pick in the next installment of the draft.
2. All GMs who do not win shall be given a 24-hour game ban after they are eliminated. These users shall still be allowed to post with a sock, but are actually encouraged not to post while game banned and to instead go meet a member of the opposite sex.
3. Judges shall have the option of having a reserved GM spot in the next installment, and shall have game-ban exemptions in the next installment
4. The Commissioner shall be given red-only VIPship for the duration of the draft, and has the option of having a reserved GM spot in the next installment.
5. Moderators who GM shall receive game-ban exemptions.
******************************
So, that's pretty much the gist of it all. There are obviously a lot of different things you can do when sending in your numbers that can make or break you. With all the different ways you can trump and the multiple prep times you can assign, no two matches should even be close to being alike. But first, we have to get these teams drafted. And to do that, we need to get these spots filled. I've rambled on long enough, I think.

Let's get sign-ups underway!

EDIt: But if the list is populated very quickly, and there are some people that want to GMwith no slots left, I can give my spot to them and judge. If you need me to. I'd rather give a newbie my GM spot and judge than to be waiting for judges to sign up.

Just as a heads-up, even if we get all the spots filled by tonight, I'm going to wait until tomorrow to get the draft order and list up. Still making a couple tweaks to the list (mostly to the team picks), still waiting on a volunteer or two for the judge's spots, and I also need to judge elsewhere. So yeah, tomorrow... provided it's filled by then.
Oh, and also, what do you guys want to do with the characters from Mass Effect? Personally, I'm not too anxious to add them until next time. Mostly because it just came out, ya know? And has anyone even come close to finishing it yet? I know I've only played it for an hour or so, so I'm not at all comfortable judging them yet. I don't even know who exactly would be good for the list yet, either. I'm thinking we should wait until next time, but if everyone else wants them on there, I'm flexible. I'd just need a solid list from somebody on who should make the list.

Oh, Revenant Wings has typed the XII characters, btw. Vaan is melee and Penelo is strictly Healing. Fran and Balthier are both distinctly long range support. Other than that, haven't met any of the original cast. Then again, I just bought the game tonight.

Awesome. I was going to assign them types, but it would've been all unofficial and junk. That helps a bunch... and it's more or less what I was going to have them as, anyways. As for the others, I think it's pretty obvious that Basch is going to be melee as well (heavy weapons and armor, one would think), and I suppose that would make Ashe the offensive mage.
