I never read the novel, but i'm aware that the second film is supposed to be more faithful it. I may read it one day.

No doubt at all. Gene Wilder. He established the role and set the bar so high it can't be beat. Some movies shouldn't be remade. They're perfect from the get go.

Said it for me too - I liked the Depp film better, but Wilder is closer to what I imagined Wonka would be like.
