Do you have what it takes to become the Ultimate Pokemon Trainer? Chim does, so join him. Now onto business...
I would like to welcome everyone back to another installment of the JC’s Trial Draft and if this is your first time, as it probably will be, fear not! Drafting is both easy and fun. For those returning members I am sure we all know the results of the Average Joes (first trial draft) with the winner being the creator behind the draft itself, Empire_Forever. Everyone congratulate him, he likes it.
This draft in itself is unrelated to Average Joes but it is still a Trial. And so this time we are going with Pokemon as the draft of choice, something easy for everyone. I am sure you all know what Pokemon are and are familiar with how obnoxiously popular they became, so I need not introduce they themselves but just the draft concept for them.
***Disclaimer***
I know this is long I just don't want this post to scare anyone off, it isn't as complicated as it seems. This is just long because it is the majority of the rules, if you have questions PM me and we can sort through it. Promise.
***Disclaimer***
The Participants
There are three types of participants in this draft: The Commissioner, The Judges, and the GMs.
The Commish: That's me! It's my job to make sure the draft runs smoothly. I take care of the draft list, randomize the draft order, call the matches, and keep track of the winners. I also have an open PM box for questions, complaints, and bad jokes. Also bribes are very much appreciated!
The Judges: There are three of these. It's their job to decide who wins the matches. They (sometimes) listen to arguments from GMs, and (sometimes) provide breakdowns on their reactions to picks during the drafting process. Also to take bribes.
The GMs: That's you guys. There are only 8 of these this go around. It's their job to assemble a good team (or bad, it's up to you). It's also their job to send in numbers (which we'll talk about in a bit), and to "pimp" their team to the judges.
Assembling a Team
The bulk of the job of a GM, and the bulk of this game, is assembling the teams. This is done, mainly, through a drafting process. Once sign-ups are finished, a draft order will be published. When it is a GM's turn to pick, they should post in this thread the character they wish to select for their team. Or the GM may PM picks into me, the Commissioner, at any time and I will make their pick for them. Be warned, however, that you only have 24-hours to select a character, so it is often a good idea to send a PM to the commish with a selection or two that you would like to make if your turn to pick is coming up soon if you might not be on. If your time expires, you will be "bumped" to the end of the round. If you are bumped twice during the process, you can be removed from the game at my discretion.
The draft order is reversed at the end of each round. So, if it begins this way:
Team A
Team B
Team C
Team D
Then the next round, it will go
Team D
Team C
Team B
Team A
And, we do that for 8 rounds.
The other ways to fill rosters for teams is through free agency and trades. Free agency occurs only in periods specified by the commish. During these times, you post in the thread a player you are dropping from your team, and a player you are dropping from the available list. To complete a trade, two GMs must agree to the deal, and then both must PM the commish for approval. If the trade is approved, the Commish will post so in the thread. Trades must be x-for-x character in terms of draft picks and characters (i.e. no 3-for-2 trades or anything of the like are allowed, also, there must be at least one character being traded. You may trade a character for a draft pick, for example, but you may not trade a draft pick for another draft pick).
Competing
Once the draft is complete, once the 8 GMs sign up, the teams will be divided into two conferences .The teams in these conferences will play round robin, with the top teams advancing to the playoffs. The playoffs then continue in single-elimination until a champion is crowned.
So after finishing drafting your team the final set up of Pokemon would look something like this:
Pokemon
Typhlosion
Steelix
Sudowudo
Rydon
Alakazam
Tyranitar
Crobat
Umbreon
And then you put that into a PM and send it to the Commish (Me). It's really that simple! GMs will have 24 hours to submit their numbers to the Commish every round, and any GM who does not submit their numbers will have them simulated via a Random Number Generator.
Once all the numbers are in (or simulated), we move on to phase two. At this point in time, the commish will call the numbers one through eight in a random order. When he calls a number, the characters assigned to that number will "battle". So, for example, when the number 3 is called, Fezzik goes into battle, and when the number 2 is called, Leonidas goes into battle. The battle is done ... well, basically in the minds of the judges, who determine who they think will win. Part of the fun of this phase is the GMs arguing for why their characters should win. There are three judges, and it takes two votes for a character to win.
This phase continues until all six numbers have been called. A team wins if they get at least four of the individual matches. However, if neither team is successful in securing those four wins (the teams tie at 3-3) then we go to the third phase:
Team Battles! Here, the teams face off in a 8-on-8 all-out brawl. Again, the judges decide who would win, and take things like teamwork into account, and again 2 votes are needed to win.
Optional Strategies
There are two additional strategies that are optional to use: Trainer prep time, and trumps.
Trumps: When using a trump, you send two characters into battle at the same time. To use a trump, simply state in your numbers which characters are going to be teaming up. So, your numbers could look like this:
1. Typhlosion
2. Alakazam Trumped with Umbreon
3. Steelix
4. Umbreon Trumped with Alakazam
5. Tyranitar
6. Rydon
So, the advantage of trumping is that you can send two characters into battle at once. However, the trump will only fight once. The second time it is called, your team will forfeit that match. So, for example, if the number 2 is called, both Alakazam and Umbreon will go into battle, but when number 4 is called, this team will forfeit their match and give an autowin to their opponent.
Please note: You can trump two characters in one trump, or use more than one trump at a time, but for each character you trump, you will receive a forfeit.
Trainer Prep: This is something we are doing a little differently this draft, of course. Each GM will draft 8 Pokemon, one at a time, and two trainers from the trainer list. You can draft a Trainer at any time, and also a Pokemon at any time but only one at a time. These trainers are going to be used to boost one Poke’s battle ability for the match they are paired together for. So be sure to get a trainer that compliments your Pokemon well, and be sure to balance your selection. Remember, you can only draft one, each round.
It should look something like this:
1.Typhlosion (Prepared with Blaine)
2. Alakazam
3. Steelix
4. Umbreon
5. Tyranitar
6. Rydon (Prepared with Brock)
Now, it is first important to understand that you only start six of your characters. So you choose the six you wish to ‘start’ (and the two you wish to bench). Having decided that, you assign the numbers one through six to the characters you are starting. So, you could decide on this for the hypothetical team above:
Starters
1.Typhlosion (Prepared with Blaine)
2. Alakazam Trumped with Umbreon
3. Steelix
4. Umbreon Trumped with Alakazam
5. Tyranitar
6. Rydon (Prepared with Brock)
Please note: There is no penalty for using the trainer prep, and it is not required. But you can only use one trainer per Pokemon, so if you want to use your trainer preps on a trump, you will have to use both trainers. If your numbers are simulated, trumps will be randomized and your team will forfeit the rights to use trainers. It is also important to note that during team battles, the entire team is prepared.
Locations
Just for now to save time we will do it the old way. Each round it is randomly selected by the RNG and I will post what it is at the start, before numbers are submitted, so that the GMS may decide who or what to play depending the location.
Prizes and Punishment
The GM whose team wins will probably receive nothing, but in the end we are all winners aren’t we? But I guess we could probably give them the first overall pick in the REAL draft, couldn’t we? Yeah I think. GMs of teams whose teams get eliminated receive absolutely nothing at all. It’s a trial run, we don’t need the bannings just yet. Unless you quit before the end, then you will be perma-banned.
Sign-ups
Well, if that long and completely unnecessary post didn't scare you away, sign up! Actually do it anyway. To do so, just copy the list of GMs below, add your name to the list, and repost it! Please be sure to copy the newest list so that no names get left off the list. Hurry to sign up while supplies last! Once all spots are filled, I will post the list and get to putting everything in order for the Drafting to commence.
So I'll ask again. Do you have what it takes to be the Ultimate Pokemon Trainer?

I can't speak for the other judges, but I'll be judging based primarily on the games.

So how will individual battles be decided? I'm assuming we're going on stats, move pool, and type match-ups, correct? I would join, but I think I'd like to see how this takes off, and I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to GM.

That would be the basis for my decisions, yes. Should it have to go deeper, things like size and weight would be taken into account as well. Think Steelix vs. Raticate. Case-by-case basis, more or less.

Boy it's great to see this fill up so fast. And thanks for the blessing Tyi, let's hope it goes smooth shall we?
I am pretty sure we decided on game stats for this one. Sorry, I guess I didn't include that bit of info and it is pretty important. Oh well, it's always something. If any of you guys need help with getting your team ideas started this site is perfect for Pokemon from the games. Remember though it is only the Pokes up to and including Gold and Silver, none of that other nonsense.... yet.
Once one more person signs up you will see what I mean and I'll post the list.

Thank you, Chimmy. That's perfectly fine with me. I've played that other "nonsense" but let me tell you that none of it has yet to match up to the greatness of R/B and G/S. Plus, I was really not looking forward to having to look up that mess of an anime to argue the Pokemon. I would have done it, but it would have been like gouging my eyes out. Game-based Pokes are perfect.
