The Movie & Television Character Draft 3: Nothin' or Double
|
General Managers. Welcome.
I’d like for all of you to take a look around at the people standing next to you. Take a good, hard look at all eleven faces you see. Take in every freckle, every dimple, every twitch of the jaw. For these are faces that you’ll be seeing an awful lot of over the next few months.
However, these are not friendly faces. These are not faces to be fraternized or socialized with. No, these faces represent nothing more than a mountain of competition ready to be climbed, and only one of you will manage to reach its summit. That is the goal folks, to get to the top. Kick, punch, scratch, claw, bite, I don’t care how you do it.
Determination will be key. Cunning will be paramount. And in the end, only one will stand. Whom that will be... is up to you.
That’s right folks, we're back in all of our glory. I present to you the Third Installment of the Movie & Television Character Draft. We’ve gotten through two successful drafts now, and I’m happy to say that the last one went down (almost) without a single hitch. For your viewing pleasures, here are the first two installments:
The Movie and Television Character Draft
The Movie and Television Character Draft 2: Census and Games' Bogus Journey
I am also proud to announce the introduction of the Official Movie & Television Draft Walk of Fame, now enshrined with the winners of the first two drafts.
Official Movie & Television Draft Walk of Fame
Fortunately for the GM’s in this draft, the defending champion, Shadow_of_Durron, will not be defending his title. He’s graciously volunteered for a different role. But we’ll get to that soon.
Or maybe we'll get to it right now.
(Template stolen from Shurron’s VGD)
Participants
There are three different types of participants in this (and any) draft game.
1. The Commissioner That's me. It's my job to enforce the rules, update draft lists, generate matches, keep the game flowing, randomize draft lists, and basically take crap from everyone else when things don't go their way.
2. The GMs It's the job of the GMs to assemble their teams, mainly through drafting, but trades and free agency can be used as well. It's also the job of the GMs to send in numbers (we'll discuss this later), and, optionally, argue as to why their character(s) should win matches.
3. The Judges It's the job of the Judges to, well, judge. They decide who will win matches. They also are encouraged to provide breakdowns of teams and grades for draft picks as the drafting moves along, but this is not required.
So that's an overview, let's look at the way the draft will shake-out.
Step 1: The Draft
Once all the positions are filled, I'll randomize the draft order and post the list from which the GMs will draft their teams. There will be fourteen rounds of drafting, which of course means that each team will consist of fourteen characters. The draft order will also reverse after each round. This is so that the people in the lower part of the first round aren't getting the shaft by giving them picks that are closer together.
Example:
Round 1
1. Team A
2. Team B
3. Team C
4. Team D
Round 2
1. Team D
2. Team C
3. Team B
4. Team A
And we'll do fourteen rounds like that.
STEP 2: THE MATCHUPS
Once all fourteen rounds of drafting are completed, I'll post the first round of matchups. Each GM's squad will face off against another GM's squad. Once the matchups are posted, I'll ask each GM to PM me a set of numbers. Basically what you do here is assign each character on your squad a number from 1 to 10, and when I randomly call, for example, the number 6, whoever you placed at number 6 will square off against whomever the opposing GM placed at number 6. Fairly simple, right?
Let's look at a hypothetical set of numbers.
Suppose you had the following team: Jack Bauer, Pinhead, Peter Petrelli, V, Severus Snape, Gabe Law, Harry Potter, Tyler Durden, T-1000, The Bride, Jack Burton, Mr. Incredible, Shrek, and Tony Montana. You could send in numbers like so:
1. Jack Bauer (24)
2. V (V For Vendetta)
3. Pinhead (Hellraiser)
4. Tony Montana (Scarface)
5. Peter Petrelli (Heroes)
6. Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
7. Harry Potter (Harry Potter)
8. T-1000 (Terminator)
9. The Bride (Kill Bill)
10. Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles)
That, or any order. It really is best to keep things random. Just don’t make it too random, or it’ll be predictable.
Now, you'll notice that I said that you can assign ten numbers. So why do we have fourteen rounds of drafting and twelve characters per team? Simple. You have to decide on the four characters that you want to sit out the individual battles for that round. GMs can switch which characters they want to sit out, though. In the example above, that hypothetical GM decided to sit out Jack Burton, Severus Snape, Gabe Law, and Shrek. But, after that match is over and he is facing off against a different GM, he could decide put those four characters into the match and sit out, say, Tyler Durden, T-1000, The Bride, and V. It's up to the GM to decide which characters would serve him best in the individual battles for that round.
Not to worry, though. All fourteen of your characters will participate in team battles, if that becomes necessary.
A team battle occurs if, after we get through all ten rounds of individual battles, the two squads are deadlocked at five wins apiece. The team battle will then act as a tiebreaker and the winner of that battle will win the match. And team battles are just what they sound like. The judges have to decide which team would win in an all out brawl between every character on both squads.
OPTIONAL STRATEGIES:
Here are a couple of different things that you can use (or not use) when sending in your numbers:
Trumps
A trump is when you place two characters together for a greater chance of winning their matchup. Sounds simple, right? But there's a downside. Trumping your characters together for a greater chance of success will result in an auto-loss for your squad.
Here's how it works:
Using the same team from above, you can send in your numbers like so:
1. Jack Bauer (24)
2. V (V For Vendetta)
3. Pinhead (Hellraiser)
4. Tony Montana (Scarface) TRUMPED with Harry Potter (Harry Potter)
5. Peter Petrelli (Heroes)
6. Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
7. Harry Potter (Harry Potter) TRUMPED with Tony Montana (Scarface)
8. T-1000 (Terminator)
9. The Bride (Kill Bill)
10. Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles)
Now, when I call, say, number 7, both Tony and Harry will face off against whomever your opponent has at number seven. Obviously, they have a greater chance of defeating whomever comes up as their opponent, but there's always the possibility that their opponent is completely out of their league. That's known as "trump busted" (not to be confused with "slump busting"). That's the risk involved with trumping.
Now, once that trump has done battle, whether they win or lose, when I call the other number the trump used (in this case 4), the team will receive an auto-loss in that spot and whomever the other team has on that number will get the win no matter what.
Now, can you use multiple trumps or even put more than two characters together in one trump? Yes, of course. You can trump your team however you see fit. Just always be aware that you will receive an auto-loss for each team member that's trumped, so don't get too carried away.
Theoretically, you could send in your numbers like this:
1. Jack Bauer (24)
2. V (V For Vendetta) TRUMPED with Tyler Durden (Fight Club) TRUMPED with T-1000 (Terminator)
3. Pinhead (Hellraiser)
4. Tony Montana (Scarface) TRUMPED with Harry Potter (Harry Potter)
5. Peter Petrelli (Heroes) TRUMPED with Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles)
6. Tyler Durden (Fight Club) TRUMPED with T-1000 (Terminator) TRUMPED with V (V For Vendetta)
7. Harry Potter (Harry Potter) TRUMPED with Tony Montana (Scarface)
8. T-1000 (Terminator) TRUMPED with V (V For Vendetta) TRUMPED with Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
9. The Bride (Kill Bill)
10. Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles) TRUMPED with Peter Petrelli (Heroes)
Now, because this GM is using a three different trumps and one of them involves three characters, this GM will receive four auto-losses. Which numbers get the auto-losses are random, since I'll be calling out the numbers in a random order. So, if I call number 8 first, then T-1000, V, and Tyler will all do battle against whomever the opponent has at number 8, but then when I call number 2 and number 6, this team will receive an autoloss each time.
It may seem a bit complicated, but it's not that bad. At least not once you get into the game.
Preparation Time
The second of our optional strategies is known as prep time. Basically what this means is that you can assign up to three of your characters prep time when sending in your numbers. So, again, your numbers could look like this:
1. Jack Bauer (24) *Prepared*
2. V (V For Vendetta)
3. Pinhead (Hellraiser)
4. Tony Montana (Scarface)
5. Peter Petrelli (Heroes)
6. Tyler Durden (Fight Club) *Prepared*
7. Harry Potter (Harry Potter) *Prepared*
8. T-1000 (Terminator)
9. The Bride (Kill Bill)
10. Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles)
Being prepared means that the character(s) to which you assign preparation time will know in advance who they are fighting, and will be given a basic file on the commonly known strengths and weaknesses of their opponent. The prepared character will not be told where their opponent will begin the match, although they themselves will be able to begin the match wherever they want on the battlefield. They will have 24 hours to prepare a strategy, assemble, buy, or build weapons and armors, create traps in the battlefield, etc.
Now, I put this under optional strategies, and yes, prep time is optional. However, unlike trumping, there's no penalty for using prep time for your characters, so it's pretty much in your best interests to assign three of your characters prep time for every match. Even if you don't end up with any characters that would obviously benefit a great deal from it, you might as well give the prep time to someone. The difference might be minimal, but you never know when it could be the difference maker in a really close match.
Now, can you prep a trump? Yes, yes you can. However, prepping a trump will consume one of your preps for each member of the trumps. So instead of being able to prepare three different individual fighters for that match, you would only have the one prepared individual and a prepared two-man trump. Or, you could have just a prepared three-man trump. Again, that's completely up to the GM.
It's also important to note that during team battles, both teams are considered to have prep time.
Locations
A new addition to this draft will be the concept of locations. The locations will provide a context for the matches to take place, adding to the detail of the battles and making judging both more interesting and easier. There are 28 eligible locations to be used, but only 2 will be randomly selected for each round, with a different one assigned to each conference for the round’s duration. By the end of the draft, a total of only 15 locations will have been used.
The eligible locations vary in size, landscape, and various objects and materials around. Each location called will be designated as one of Small (S), Medium (M), or Large (L). The letter will be determined by the size of the location, and the letter will determine the distance between two unprepped opponents to begin a match. The distances are as follows (subject to change):
Small – 15 feet apart
Medium – 50 feet apart
Large – 100 feet apart
Team battles will not include a specific location, and will be fought in the same generic battlefield as used in previous drafts.
Prizes and Punishments
1. The winner of this draft shall receive one week of VIPship and optional use of a special Video Game Draft winner icon. They will also be enshrined into the Video Game Draft Hall of Fame and will receive the first pick in the next installment of the draft.
2. All GMs who do not win shall be given a 24-hour game ban after they are eliminated. These users shall still be allowed to post with a sock, but are actually encouraged not to post while game banned and to instead go meet a member of the opposite sex.
3. Judges shall have the option of having a reserved GM spot in the next installment, and shall have game-ban exemptions in the next installment
4. The Commissioner shall be given red-only VIPship for the duration of the draft, and has the option of having a reserved GM spot in the next installment.
5. Moderators who GM shall receive game-ban exemptions.
******************************
So, that's pretty much the gist of it all. There are obviously a lot of different things you can do when sending in your numbers that can make or break you. With all the different ways you can trump and the multiple prep times you can assign, no two matches should even be close to being alike. But first, we have to get these teams drafted. And to do that, we need to get these spots filled. I've rambled on long enough, I think.

Glad to finally be playing this, but I have no doubt that I'll lose horribly. Barring several strokes of luck.

Stay at 12. Unless you really like simming numbers and you want to spend a lot of time finding replacement GMs and/or judges.
