Another pointless thread begins......

Here we post our favorite foods from around Chicago and the 'burbs. Nothing better than debating food and showing outsiders where to dine in this great city of ours.

I'll start it off..

Hot Dogs- Gene and Jude's, located in River Grove. THE best dogs, no ketchup allowed, and a hefty serving of fresh-cut fries to complement a fine meal.

Burgers- I'm going with Goldyburger's in Forest Park, located near the Green Line. The biggest, juciest cheeseburgers I have ever seen and tasted, though Portillo's is a close second.

Cheese Fries- Susie's Drive-Thru, 4100 Montrose. They give you a giant, edible bowl with fresh-cut fries, great cheese sauce, and they even have toppings, including gyros meat.

Deep dish pizza- Giordano's, hands down. Fresh ingredients and a pound of cheese per pie makes this place the best IMHO.

Thin crust pizza- Home Run Inn has been my family's favorite since we lived on the south side. A buttery crust just makes it a winner.

Italian Beef- Johnnie's Beef in Elmwood Park has the best seasoned shredded beef, tough rolls that can be "juiced" and not fall apart, and carmelized peppers make this a long-time favorite.

Polish sausage- The best place to enjoy a Maxwell Street-type sausage is at Sox park. They somehow have mastered the exact way it's been cooked at the disappearing Maxwell Street for years. Extra grilled onions for me.

I think there's a thread like this out there already (someone was planning a visit here and asked for recommendations) but I'm too lazy to dig it up.

Hot Dogs - Portillo's always deserves a mention, as does Mickey's out in the near west suburbs (Berkeley). But I gotta go with the hot dog stand on museum campus, in between the Field Museum and the wreckage of that spaceship that crashed into Soldier Field. Poppy seed buns are a key, but they're best with just some mustard and a touch of celery salt. And yeah, they'll put ketchup on 'em if you want. Individual taste > culinary snobbery.

Burgers - Another Portillo's honorable mention, at the very least. They're damn tough to beat, but I think the burgers from a little sh!thole up in Lincoln Park can give them a run for their money. The name of the place escapes me, but it's a gyro joint on Broadway, just north of Diversey (across the street from Border's and PetSmart.) Speaking of gyro...

Gyros - Mr Greek, hoo-ah. I think I may have mentioned a different place in the other thread (Windy City maybe), but Mr Greek's been my main gyro hook-up for a while now. Great meat, juice, sauce and pita. Hub's deserves a mention here, too.

Cheese Fries - Susie's Drive-Thru, 4100 Montrose. Mark's right on target here, but beware: their quality fluctuates regularly and the fries are never as good when you're sober.

Deep dish pizza - Giordano's is good, but nothing compares to Pizzeria Uno/Due. If I put a slice of it on your head, your tongue would eat a hole through your brain just to get to it.

Mexican - El Famous, various locations. Just about everything's damn good, especially tennis-ball-canister-sized burritos. A shout out goes to Angela's (~2600 N Clark) for kickass chorizo & cilantro tacos.

Cheese Fries - I actually think these are the only cheese-fries I had in Chicago (outside of generic "we'll put cheese on your fries" as a side thought restaurants). I wasn't sober, and they were mana from gOD.

Deep dish pizza - Pizzeria Uno/Due FTW. I could eat their pizza daily, whereas Giordano's is more like only once every 4 months.

Thin Crust - I gotta go with "Justa Pizza" which is a tiny joint down the street from my old place on 48th & Pulaski. Connies' on Archer got a mean pie too. I never really thought much of Home Run, and ate there quite a bit since it was down the street from work. Granted I only had the buffet.

Mexican - El Famous is definitely the best burrito in Chicago. I recommend a combo burrito of Lingua & Chile Rellenos with sour cream & guac. El's was the first real burrito I ever had. The one in Summit, up the street from Phil's house seems to be the best (and I think I've eaten at just about all of them). But for real Mexican cuisine I have to go with (I forget the name) of that awesome place on 18th right next to the tortilla factory. The honest truth is, it's as hard to get bad Mexican in Chicago as it is to get good Mexican in Austin (TexMex is by far no comparison to real Mexican food). There's only one good place to get Mexican in Austin...and the guy who runs the place is from Chicago. How 'bout it.

Pork Chop
- Ditka's. I don't recall ever having a better piece of pig in my life. It's stupid expensive....so make someone take you there for your burfday. The one time I was there, Coach was actually downstairs eating dinner with his family.

Bone Daddy - Their BBQ beat anything I ever had in Memphis (which is supposed to be the BBQ capital of BBQ-world). Runner up is The Gale Street on Milwaukee.

SUZIE'S

Well, yes, the quality can fluctuate,

BUT

I lived 1-Block exactly from this amazing establishment.

From 1976 to 1996 and can difinitively say,

no where anywhere has ever had better French Fries.

Not even my most favored child hood hot dog stand
from the 50s & early 60s

TRIVIA, they also use to serve__BREAKFEAST,
including pancakes and French Toast!

-------------------------------------------

Sushi_______Midori up by Northeaster Illinois University,

around Bryn Mawr and Kimbal?

Discovered in early 70s, and still my favorite,
my second most favorite is in Bloomington, Indiana.

----------------------------------------------

Italian - La Villa, around Pulaski and Addison

best raw clams anywhere! Including places visited
on the East and West coasts. Otherwise, not to costly
basic family owned, high quality food.

-------------------------------------------------

BREAKFEAST - GrandMa's______West of Wolf on Dundee,
an unsure of location.

BEST Potato Pancakes!

--------------------------------------------------

OLD SCHOOL,

Don Roth's Blackhawk restuarant (these guys use to be downtown)

----------Spinning Bowl of Salad_________(but, bring your wallet)

---------------------------------------------------------

BAR and Entertainment.......gosh, I can think of nothing,
that does not last more than a year and then it changes
too much.

Hmm.

Hot Dog: Gotta go with Superdawg.

Burger: I'm gonna straight-up go with Portillo's. Double cheeseburger, fries, chocolate shake...if I go through with my plan to murder the founding members of Chicago Force in their sleep, this will be my death row last meal.

Pizza: Uno/Due, no question. Giordano's is something I was into when I was younger, like eating paste. Honorable mention to the crumbled sausage pizza at Gino's East.

Thin Crust Pizza: gotta give a shout to Aurelio's in the far south suburbs. Been getting it at the Springer homestead for decades. The cheese is perfect and the sausage is oh so spicy.

Breaded steak sandwich: Ricobene's by Sox Park. They used to have a location at like 87th and Cicero but now I think it's an oil change place.

Hmmmmm. I need to check out some of these places.

Currently my favorite place for a variety of dishes is Portillo's. Love them.

Best ice cream hands down is Oberweis you can find them all around the metro area. They have so many yummy items it is hard to pick one but I would say the hot fudge brownie sundae made with brownie fudge twirl ice cream rather than vanilla is always a favorite. You can't go wrong with a shake either. Definitely not the cheapest place for ice cream but so much better than BR.

as part of their visit to Wizard World.

am still waiting to hear their report, but this is
