That's pretty bad when you think about it. I mean they didn't even have that many flips in JASBSB. The swordman's ship and spinning of the weapons made it all that much better. Why couldn't that have been done in ANH?

Because ANH was more like "chess with swords". They didn't need fancy flips. It was more dignified. Plus, it was the first lightsabre duel ever filmed. You couldn't do that kind of thing with Alec Guinness in 1977. And J&SBSB was meant to be over the top and funny.

This was a duel between an old man and a guy in a heavy suit. You can't expect exciting fighting moves with guys like this.

Hi, Unknownjedi. Haven't seen you around in a while. 
I think the emphasis of the ANH duel was supposed to be on the psychology, not the choreography. I think Vader and Obi-Wan were definitely fighting on more levels than you see in the movie.
Plus, remember Obi-Wan was probably very out of practice, and Vader seemed to be letting him determine how the duel was going to go. Vader knew he could win anyway, so he didn't bother pressing his attacks or trying to strike Obi down before he saluted him.

i'm not talking in terms of the actors or tech ability, surely u realised that, im talking in 'star wars' terms... if an 800 year old yoda can use the force to fight, then surely a 60 year old kenobi can do the same rather than subject us to that ANH fight

It's a movie. That's how it was shot, and how it should stand. It is an elegant *cough* duel, fom a more civilised age. Don't mess with it.
As people are so fond of telling me when I bitch about the new movies, if you don't like it, don't watch it.

I disagree with a few folks here. The duel in Ep4 should stay. My reasons:
#1 That's the original duel. Vader vs. Obi-Wan is the first lightsaber fight to have ever graced a movie screen. That duel is one of the most special scenes in the whole trilogy. It's not supposed to be a high-flying death-defying acrobatic lightsaber fest. Those types of duels are in the PT and Eps 5 & 6.
#2 Vader and Obi-Wan are old and rusty. Obi-Wan tells Luke earlier in the film that he's technically no longer a jedi: "I used to be a jedi the same as your father." So you can't expect Obi-Wan to have the agility of Dooku, who, in addition to being an active sith, is also tapping the darkside for extra power. Now about Vader: he is rusty because he hasn't had a worthwhile opponent in quite some time. And, he's on a life support system, so, as the saying goes: 'it isn't what it once was.' Plus, he is cautious because his former master knows him and his style well. Basically, as was mentioned previously, the Ep4 duel works on many more levels than just the pure physical aspect of it.
#3 Hey, in addition to the 2 previous points, the scene is fine the way it is! It's a little more sophisticated than you realize. If you examine the scene carefully, Obi-Wan tries several times to angle/joust his lightsaber at the hilt of Vader's saber. Each time Kenobi does this, Vader backs off. As we and Obi-Wan know about Anakin, his lightsaber skills have a weakness: difficulty in angling and maneuvering his lightsaber in defense of attacks aimed near the hilt (handle). Evidence: Dooku slices one of his lightsabers in two. Dooku also slices off his hand.
Anyway, I believe the scene should stay. The bottom line is that the scene functions as a climactic final meeting between Anakin and Obi-Wan. It's a flashback to the PT, which makes it singularly meaningful. It is one of the most important moments in the whole saga, and I think it works just fine.
As for J&SB, it's comedy, and the actors are not elderly or hooked up to life support devices. If physical acrobatics is all you care about, then fine. However, it is the meaning of the Ep4 duel which makes it more exciting than J&SB.

I agree that the scene should be changed. Its doesn't make sence that Ben or Vader would fight so slow. We will have seen Ben fight in 3 previous films where he fights fast (TPM, AOTC, Ep3) Theres no reason he should fight slow. If dooku can still fight fast in his 80-90's then ben should still be able to.
Someone says Vader nor been had any Jedi or sith to fight against to have their saber moves in tip top shape. Well before Darth Maul fought Qui gon and obi wan he never fought another Jedi cuz if he did then the Jedi would of been known there was some force user out there fighting Jedi before TPM.
So Maul fought on his own, using some techniques that did not require him fighting other Jedi. Same goes for dooku. he couldn't of been killing Jedi before Obi wan and ANakin because then the Jedi would know he was in the dark side.
So just cuz all the Jedi are dead doesn't mean Vader has lost his touch. Face it.....they fight slow only cuz they didn't have the good tech back then and good corigraphers (spell is wrong i know)
We dont have to see Ben and Vader bouncing off walls, but i think its important to at least make them move their sabers faster and move around more rather then just standing in one spot.

Well during the prime of the Jedi, they had droids and such to use for practice in lightsaber battles, so that's how they kept themselves in good shape with their duels, but Obi-Wan didn't have this while on Tatooine and Dooku was able to hone his skills plus the fact that he used the dark side helped. Look how old Palpatine is. He has to be in his 90's in ROTJ. The fight does not need to be changed to match the PT.

And where do u suppose luke got that flying ball thing he was practicing with on the Falcon? Obi wan used that ball to keep practicing his saber techniques.
When luke used it it was under easy mode, but i bet that thing can be put into hard mode where it shots like hell. Trust me there is no excuse for ben to be slow, nor for Vader.
