The point is moot. Luke had to make his own light saber, regardless. Remember, that is one of the tasks to becoming a Jedi.
I don't care how he made it, if it was from parts of old light sabers, plans from Obi-Wan, plans from a Popular Mechanics magazine. The point is he made it on his own. It shows his independence, him going from farm boy to Jedi.
So what if the saber could have been constructed from Qui-Gons old light saber? Does it matter? Obi-Wan is dead. If it was constructed from old saber parts of dead Jedi I wouldn't give one rats ass.
It would be an honor it several of the parts were from the dead Jedi. It would be very symbolic.

If Luke used parts from Qui-Gon's lightsaber, it would seem as if Luke would take off the cover and put a new one on. I know this theory happened because of some websites where I read the theory and that is where people got this idea. If green was a rare color for a Jedi, like purple is for Mace Windu, I would probably buy this theory. We've seen about hundred green lightsabers. It's a common color for a Jedi.
Qui-Gon wasn't even invented when ROTJ was filmed. Lucas hasn't even stated this. All that was stated is that Luke made his own lightsaber. Until more is said, it didn't happen.

I think it's more an issue of an available crystal. If Luke found the hilt in Obi-Wan's hut, he may have used it.

Perhaps it was one of Obi-Wans ols crystals. But in ANH Ben has a BLue blade as does Luke.
In TPM and AotC Obi-Wan had a blue saber. Blue is his crystal color.I don't care where he got it from. He built it in Obi-Wans hut.

Luke created the crystal himself, using a focus cooker that was still in Obi-Wan's hut. He didn't know what color it would be until he actually put the pieces of the saber together.

He created the crystal himself? Where'd you get that from? I was under the impression that the crystal was the key element, hard to find, rare, and all.

Yeah, they're hard to find. You don't think Luke was just wandering around in the desert one day and found a crystal lying on the ground? Manufacturing the crystal was the only way to go.

Who knows, maybe since we have never seen the process of making a lightsaber in a movie, Episode III might have something and that would mean Lucas finally gave an official explaination about it. Because right now it is sort of up for grabs until then.

But ... if you can manufacture the crystals, then they aren't hard to find. Why wouldn't every Jedi just grab a crystal-in-a-can to use in their lightsaber?
(By the way, what source says Luke made the crystal? An EU somethingorother?)

Natural crystals are better/more durable, but more difficult to obtain, IIRC.

Okay, so as far as the EU says, Luke didn't touch Qui-Gon's green crystal. Though I like the possible ironic/dramatic/thematic contexts that would go along with Luke "carrying on" Qui-Gon's saber ... well, he's not, so there aren't.

I think that Luke did use QGJ old lightsaber. I mean he did have a green sabre and i dont think Luke just had green gems lying around where else would he get one?
As to D_lowe i think GL did have the prequels in mind why else would he have named ANH Episode 4?????
