That's what it seems. Digital-Bits is reporting that they have confirmed its going to be a non-anamorphic release from the '93 laserdisc.

Well, that's a shame. plain sad Let's hope it's just some cruel joke. If its non-anamorphic, I guess there really isn't a point of having it on a DVD. Damn. Let's hope something happens.

I like the 2004 dvd's sure there's problems with the audio in ANH but that because of the audio was'nt as good back in the 70's as it is now also the messed up lightsaber's in ESB and ROTJ. But I don't complan about the changes GL made to the movies I just watch the moives and enjoy them. I will buy the dvd when they do come out but I'm happy with the re-master version of the movies that are out now great sound and great extras.

i mean, im 90% happy with the releases we have now

i just pray that next year we will get the best saga set EVER

with digital TPM yoda
unified sabers-now i mean, PERFECT sabers, IMO unify the saga with any sabers from the prequals(ROTS is my preferance) completely
completely removed matt lines
the lastest audio and anamotronic 45:83 or wutever it is(sorry, im not a tech guy...at all)
any existing CG to be touched up - such as the creature that attacks padme in AOTC
CG SOME of the aliens that look absoutly terrible(there is only a few, i can visualise the worst one in my head, but i cant remember where it is from)
remove that rediculous eeopie(or wutever it is) fart in TPM
fix up a few action shots, such as lukes fall in ESB
add kashyyyk and utapau to end celebration
remove blood from creatures arm in cantina, and from wampa
fixed blaster effects

absoutly BEUTIFAL artwork with a very durable box
amazing extras, sch as deleted scenes

and what the hell, throw in the O-OT anamatronic remastered, superiror 9.2 audio(once again, not a tech guy) just to shut everyone up

Bingo. If Lucas gives me the originals untouched but with outstanding DVD quality...he can do ANYTHING he wants with his films. You will never hear me complain again.

Is non-anamorphic really that bad? I mean, will I, as a non-tech guy, notice the difference? I don't have any copies of the OT yet(yes, I'm a horrible SW fan), so I figured this would be the perfect time to get them...but I just don't understand the anamorphic/non-anamorphic stuff.

EDIT: Oops, just saw your message...I thought this was the upcoming DVD release discussion topic. doh!

Regarding alien subtitles, on my HDTV at the 16x9 format, the subtitles run /beneath/ the image of the film, in the small black bar or "gutter" that runs below. Thus no part of the picture is obscured in any way; but it also is somewhat inconvenient, because you have to change the format to "16x9 with subtitles" in order to see all the words, ever-so-slightly scrunching the picture upwards.

This of course differs from the original theatrical presentation, because obviously in the theater the titles ran across the bottom of the image itself.

Anyway. Just pointing out the endless minutiae of the the SW fans experience. tongue

I own the 2004 dvd's of the original trilogy.

Anyway, whenever I watch these films with my kids I turn on the dutch subtitles (We live in Belgium.)
.
Without the kids I prefer to watch without the subtitles.
Since subtitles distract from the screen action and can even hide important visual information.
.
It always bothered me that in for instance the Greedo and Jabba scenes in EP. IV - and the scenes in Jabba's palace in Ep. VI english subitles would pop up even though I selected "no subtitles" on the dvd-menu.
Apparently the dvd-player assumes you are english speaking when you select you don't need subtitles. So english subs are still on display during the alien scenes.

It is my point that most of Greedo's and Jabba's dialogue does not really need subtitles. From the reactions of Han, C-3PO et al , the aproximate meaning of what is said in Huttese can be deduced quite easily.

Greedo : - " --huttese--"
Han : - " Even I get boarded sometimes."

Hmm, what would Greedo have said????

Now, yesterday evening when I was watching Ep VI (the scene where Jabba is bartering with the Bounty Hunter (Leia) for Chewbacca.) I accidentally pressed the stop button on my Toshiba dvd-player remote twice. Then I pressed play. The film started playing all the way in the beginning (20th century fox-logo). When I skipped some chapters to get back to the scene I was watching the Jabba subs were gone.

I tried this with Ep IV too. Press stop twice. Press play. Disc starts playing from the beginning. Skip to Greedo scene and voila => no subtitles.
(If the stop button is pressed only once, the disc just resumes play from the exact same spot as it was stopped and the subs are still there. )

I tried this trick with my Ep I dvd too. Didn't work. So I'm still stuck with the Watto, Sebulba and Ani subs.

Anyway I hope this post helped out those fans who like their SW-viewing as uncluttered as possible.

Best regards,

Andrew-Kenneth

PS.
1) I'm aware that the "alien" subs were also present in the theatrical presentation - so not selecting them on the 2004-dvd's could amount to somehow being untrue to the original Star Wars films. (Although in this respect the dvd-subs are already different from the theatrical subs. Also Star Wars-2004 was never shown theatrically (AFAIK) as opposed to the 1997-SE's and the OOT. But that's another discussion.)
2) When I saw Star Wars during it's original theatrical run in Belgium I had the honour to watch Greedo speak with three different subtitles present on-screen. (the original english subs + french and dutch subs.) Since Belgium is bilingual movies were subtitled both in french and dutch. (Nowadays they're mostly only subtitled in dutch. The french prefer their versions dubbed instead of subtitled. Only childrens films (Disney, Pixar, etc... but also Harry Potter) are dubbed in dutch.)

A-K: As I mentioned in your locked thread, that is a fascinating piece of information. I'll definitely try this method next time I watch the 2004s, and report back here as to my success in shutting off the subtitles. Thanks for the tip!

I can get why people complan about the sound for the a new hope dvd because of reversed stereo in the 5.1 mix the movie has been mixed so many times over the years. And when they remix the movie in 2004 the where limatations in the sound technogy of the 70's to get it sound just right. The other flims in the series did'nt have that problem. Technogly changes not everthing is pefect and some fans want everything to be perfect. Not everything is perfect.

The audio was fine in the 97 SE VHS set. It wasn't until the lackluster transfer in 2004, when LFL gave the DVD team a month per film, did the audio get screwed up in scenes like Tarkin and Leia's confrontation on the Death Star bridge.

No one was "complaining" simply because there was bad sound. It was an annoyance, to be sure, but what people were "complaining" about was how sloppy the transfer was, and it was sloppy because LFL was concerned about rushing the product out rather than taking their time.

The trasfers of the re-mastered original trilogy are fine to me except for the lightsaber issues.
