That's a very good thing then, but it does change the fact that the transfer was a rush job.

no it does'nt for me because star wars is still a great flim no matter how many versions their are and I do perfer the special editions of the episodes 4,5, and 6 than the original versions. I saw The Special Edition of Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope in 1997 at the theater in elyria, ohio where I live at the general cinema and then Episode 1 in 1999 Episode 2 in 2002 and Episode 3 in 2005 in the theater and it was fun for both me and my dad.

What I said has nothing to do with the quality of the films themselves. The people working on the transfer were not given enough time, and that's fact. One month per film is not enough to do a proper transfer, hence why the audio and the lightsabers are so messed up. Had they been given more time per film, the DVDs we got in 2004 would have been much better. I can only hope that the next time they release a new version, they take their time and give it the time it deserves.

jedimasterbac posted: The audio was fine in the 97 SE VHS set. It wasn't until the lackluster transfer in 2004, when LFL gave the DVD team a month per film, did the audio get screwed up in scenes like Tarkin and Leia's confrontation on the Death Star bridge.
I heard it was a month, total, for the whole trilogy. Then again, I don't know if that info came from a legit source.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was a month per film. With the small team they had working on it, a month for the entire trilogy probably would have been impossible.

That depends on what you mean "a month per film." Per film to do what? Build the DVD transfer/master and menu items and such? The entire DVD set was more than a year in the making. They began with telecineing the O-neg and color correcting it, then sending that to Lowry labs while the special features were being worked on, ie interviews, commentaries. Maybe they had a month to put all the elements together (ie do the menus and make sure all the files and transfers are okay), which is somewhat terse considering that these things can be buggy. Personally they did an incredible job--the menus are some of the best I've seen and they actually manipulated the original footage in three dimensions, and the transfer is flawless. Its the actual material they mastered that is the problem--ie the color and sound mixing. But my understanding is that these were among the first things to be done, way back in 2003 I believe, and thus there was plenty of time to fix them, and/or push back the release.
I simply assign incompetence for either not catching them or letting them go--possibly both, because I'm sure there was plenty of higher-up people who realised that Vader is not supposed to have a pink lightsaber but felt that it could "slip by", and on the same hand there must have been plenty of higher-up people who could have and would have mandated corrections had they paid enough attention to realise such core problems were even apparent(as an example, George Lucas, who himself supervised the coloring and signed off on it after a screening) so it stands that they simply showed incompetance (as far as Lucas is concerned, I have to believe that he is still somehow ignorant to the matter, even after having screened the transfers publically since then, for if he was truly aware that Darth Vader had a pink lightsaber he would have mandated an immediate correction, as he is so anal about the changes).

Maybe he's discovered a newfound love for the color pink.

Everything that I recall from three years ago when this set came out said that the team had one month to transfer each film. That basically means that whoever designed the menus, which you pointed out (and they are incredible), had three months to work.

Well that doesn't really have anything to do with the actual AV master then. The transfer themselves--the translation from HD master to DVD file--are impeccable, near flawless in terms of transfer-based artifacting. As I said, the actual telecine master was done at the very beginning, many months before the actual DVD authoring was begun. In any event the errors even if they could be explained in that they were "rushed" are not excusable by that explanation.

The only audio issue that I noticed was that the sound in ANH was generally louder in some scenes and then suddenly fainter in the next scene.
The only other major problem was the inconsistent lightsaber FX and colors. Darth Vader's saber is either pink, purple, or red. I never understood why the lightsabers FX and colors were not fixed.

I know, just pointing out that that actually doesn't explain the picture problems (ie "it was rushed" is not applicable as far as coloring is concerned). It does however give the DVD team some good standing in that they put together a terrific package in a fairly compressed time.

I recently watched part of the latest ROTJ release, and the colours are way off on everything compared to the original. Sometimes there's too much red, sometimes there's too much blue. And the final space battle still has a lot of garbage mattes.
Now, the 1997 SE. There was some good restoration.

Very true. Though the video transfer of the 97 SE sucked too, it was all pink.
