Of course, the OT films already have comics versions: Including the Manga epics, there are three versions of 'ANH' alone and two versions each of the other two -- as well as a single text novel apiece, and, lest we forget, the photo-heavy 'Story of...' young-adult picture-books.
An animated version of the Manga STAR WARS comics would be interesting, certainly, but it would also be obnoxious and over-the-top. After all, you can always simply read the comic itself without appeal to some putatively superior movie version.
Oh yeah, I don't at all think it's necessary. I would rather see more comics than film remakes though.

I think remakes would be panned, hated, burned, or the 501st would march right through production an righfully haunt it.

I have sometimes thought about ANH being remade as a Western. And not made by GL, but another director, studio, producer, etc. Han's clothes wouldn't need to be changed, just the type of gun he has. The scene where Luke returns to his house and see his dead Aunt and Uncle was taken from The Searchers. The cantina sequence is like a rowdy bar from a Western movie. Luke's landspeeder would have to be an old horse. You know, an Appaloosa horse with spots and such to represent paint scrapes and rust. Princess Leia could be a princess from some European country visiting America. Chewbacca could be just a really hairy guy. Or maybe a guy who wears a full-length buffalo robe coat with the hair on the outside, who likes to moan or growl randonmly and at inappropriate times for no apparent reason. That sort of thing. I think it would work.
In fact, I just might go to work on the synopsis for this movie today.
To qoute Carrie Fisher from the Commentary on the TESB dvd release;

Yeah, that's more the kind of thing I meant earlier. Star Wars being done multiple ways but in comic form so it is clearly just another take on the story without seeming like it's trying to replace the originals. I'd be interested in seeing Star Wars adapted to another setting or style. Western seems like it would fit best but there's a lot you could do with it.

While you're working on that synopsis, you may want to consider how you're going to treat light sabers (Samurai swords?), 'using the Force' (psychic powers in a Western?), and Ben's vanishing act.

Yeah, the Jedi would present a problem in a Western. It could be something akin to the TV series Kung Fu though by making the Jedi a group of magic wielding Martial Artists/Samurai from Japan who were hunted to extinction by the Sith who could be Ninja or Ronin.

How about ANH remade with live-action talking animals like
those in the Homeward Bound movies?
That would be tight.
Darth Vader could be a really big Rottweiler. Or a black Great Dane.
Chewbacca could be a , well,.. he could be a bear.
Tarkin could be a Greyhound because he's all skinny and everything.
Why did Tarkin use hairspray? That was weird. His hair had a nice little
feather in the back of his head and it never moved. Check it out next time you watch ANH.

about what the actual story would be.

I wasn't trying to discredit the idea, I actually think a comic adapting the Star Wars story to another setting would be really interesting and would fit with the idea of the Hero with a Thousand Faces.

the OT is great as it is. I have fallen in love with 4-6 and consider it much better than 1-3 *although Ewan is pretty hot  * so it shouldnt' be remade at all.

I think OT is fine as is. I would just do the last bit where Vader takes out Sidious over and include the Radio Drama script. After all, that is canon too and it would be more dynamic. It is just the Vader-Sidious battle expanded a bit to show that Sidious does actually try to Master Vader there and Anakin indicated that Vader is dead and Anakin no longer has a Sith Master. The Radio Drama rocks and gives one chills. The movie version is ok too, but you have to imagine all of that.
