No leve the OT alone! The saga is complete, over, and it dose not have to be tinkered with any longer. (unless Lucas wants to put in some deleted scenes).

I think I'll reiterate and further the relentless pummeling of a deceased equine by saying that I think remaking the original trilogy would be a totally rotten idea. In my personal opinion, Lucas shouldn't even be tinkering with the originals, but that's another point entirely. You don't remake films that are truly classic, or you end up with poor comparisons to the original, regardless of how good or bad the execution is. And let's not forget how horrendous a truly bad remake can prove, such as...
Godzilla
(1998). *Shudder*
That's not to say that all remakes are bad. If someone wants to try their hands at a new version of
Dune
, for example, I say full speed ahead. I just think a remade
Star Wars
would be a mess.

I have a feeling Dune fans would say never remake Dune, but Star Wars is fair game.

Speaking as a
Dune
fan, I still would like to see a new version. I liked David Lynch's interpretation, but it was nowhere near what I pictured. Granted, it was closer than the Sci-Fi miniseries...

Star Wars should be remade as a Western.
That would be tight.

RE: Should the OT be remade??
How "remade"? Is there different dialogue? New production design? Does the Falcon look like the Falcon? Does Han Solo, as portrayed by, say, that kid from Smallville, wear the same outfit that Ford did? Or should all the costumes be re-designed with brighter colors and delightful fabrics? What about the action scenes? Are they shot from the same angles? Edited in the same sequence? Sound edited with the same sound effects? And who does the music? If John Williams, should he be expected to repeat the exact same score in certain scenes, or deliver an entirely new one throughout? If different, why get John Williams? If someone else, should they try to copy Williams' sound, so intrinsic to the STAR WARS experience? If yes, why not not get John Williams? Do the Tusken Raiders look the same? How about the Jawas? (If yes, why bother re-making the movie?) And the creatures in the Cantina -- will these be all new creatures? Or all the same creatures but in different poses, shot from different angles? Or a mixture of some familiar and some new creatures? Does Greedo shoot first? Is Walrus Man's hand a flipper or a claw? Does the actor portraying Obi-Wan Kenobi attempt an Ewan MacGregor impersonation, an Alec Guiness impersonation, or some new interpretation entirely his (or her?) own? What about the other actors? Should they imitate Hamill, Fisher and Ford? Is Darth Vader re-designed as a monstrous mechanical badass with huge shoulder plates, spiked armor and massive thighs? Or is he weak and pitiful, Tarkin's croney? Or is he exactly the same as in the original films? (If yes, why bother re-making the movie?)
The unanswerable questions and absurd contradictions continue to pile up after a few moments of thought on this topic.

Absolutely not!!
There is no possible way you could duplicate the what the OT is.

I may have said this already in this thread, but remaking the OT is just a very
bad
idea.

RE: Should the OT be remade??
Since most of this thread is filled with posts that say "hell no" or "absolutely not", I think it would be interesting to see this discussion steered towards why people think remaking it would be a bad idea. I guess what I mainly want to know is how a remake of the classic trilogy would damage the films.

RE: Should the OT be remade??
Your post refers to things that would likely need to be changed in order to justify a remake, but it doesn't address the issue of how a remake would actually hurt the original films themselves. That's the main point I'm driving at.

Well, the original films are special. Lightning struck, if you will, when those films were made; there was something serendipitous about their production, a marriage of creative arts that somehow proved greater than the sum of its parts. Any remake would almost certainly fall short of achieving the level of quality of the originals in the areas of writing, casting, performance, design, music, sound, visual effects, or editing. As with the vast majority of movies that are released every year, one or more of these elements of filmmaking would inevitably fail, and suddenly STAR WARS wouldn't seem so special anymore.
Furthermore, in the mind of the public, remakes would further diminish the achievements -- artistic, commercial and critical -- of the original films. STAR WARS, already today in danger of oversaturating the market, would seem even more like just another product, just another cog in the LFL machine, if the company started churning out remakes.
And BTW, my earlier post does not just "refer to things that would likely need to be changed to justify a remake". It points out how absurd even asking most of these questions -- which are nonetheless unavoidable, if remakes are to be considered -- is. The question as to the composer and the matter of the score alone should be enough to demonstrate how a remake will diminish the achievement of the originals.
