This scene sets Han's character for me and it did introduce him as a mercenary by shooting first. Having it otherwise(like what was obviously done for the SE), changes his character. Like what 2ndQuest said, we have Leia referring to him as a mercenary, but he isn't set up that way anymore. So, to answer your question, yes - this was a factor before the change was even made. It helped set up his character and to show the audience that Han meant business.
And just to touch on murder thing - it wasn't murder by having Han shoot first. It was self-defense. I mean, Greedo had a blaster pointed at his chest and responded with, "That's the idea" to Han's comment about his dead body. How would you react in that situation?
