Does he even need it? Alot of the damage seen seems to suggest severe damage to the lower body and torso from his lava burn. I wouldn't be surprised if he's missing numerous organs and is really just a torso's worth of flesh with *maybe* a heart and brain functioning properly (hence the need for a breathing apparatus).

It doesn't matter what sort of injuries he's had. Assuming he still has a human brain, and it's a given that he does because he still has his personality and memories and isn't a droid, he has to sleep. Without REM, the brain will eventually stop functioning. Maybe he sleeps sitting up in his meditation chamber or maybe he can actually take his helmet off and lie down (and/or use an appropriately shaped pillow tongue ), but he has to do it somehow.

I favor the idea that he sleeps while standing around looking intimidating at the Emperor's shoulder, though. tongue It seems that he has to spend a lot of time standing around quietly while Palpy does various things, so if I were him in that situation, I'd sneak a nap. tongue

//soft electronically-distorted snoring noises become audible during RotJ scenes in which Palpy is lecturing Luke and Vader has nothing to do

Emperor Palpatine: Lord Vader...
Darth Vader: ... [slow mechanical breathing]
Emperor Palpatine: LORD VADER!!
Darth Vader: wha? Huh? Er... Yes master?
Emperor Palpatine: RIIISE.
Darth Vader: Just a few more minutes, my master...
Emperor Palpatine: No! NOW! I won't say it again. Who saved your life when you got beaten by your former master? Don't make me have to pop open a can of Force lightning on your ungrateful butt! RIIISE.
Darth Vader: Okay, okay. Let me just clean the drool off the inside of my helmet.

All of this is just too funny happy now snice it's been mentioned everytime i see vader just idly standing in the background...i think he is flat out sleeping and that grumpy mood he is always in is due to the fact he just got up...

How does he use the bathroom is the real question.

How does he use the bathroom is the real question.

The big red button, if you look close enough, says "flush."

How does he go to the bathroom? I can't believe no one has thought of this before. You know that codpiece thing he has on his pelvis? You realize that it has a little cylindrical-shaped thing on it. That's a hatchway! He walks into the Death Star urinals, and it slides up.

Slimy!

I bet it would get to be painful walking around in those boots all day. I wonder if he has a pair of slippers that he changes into every now and again.

If he has to go #1, his codpiece pops open. If he has to go #2, the chair in his meditation chamber doubles as a toilet.

Seriously, wouldn't it have to? If he can't take off his mask and suit outside of his controlled environment, he must do both his eating and his pooping in there. laugh

I've posted this elsewhere, but it seems to go along the same lines as this conversation...

I Vader doesn't have a flesh body below his torso, then why does he have a weenie hatch?

On a more serious note, Vader probablly does sleep. He does have a brain, and the basic reason for sleep is to repair the body, and the brain needs it. Studies on cats have show that if you deprive the body of sleep for long enough periods of time, the brain begins to shut down.

However, if you are adept enough to save a man's life who is basically missing two thirds of his body and make him mobile, then who knows what Sidious did to Vader's body and brain to make him a machine.

As far as food and nourishment go, you ever see Robocop?

What I want to know is,,, Why are is this being discussed when there are so many other un answered important questions such as:

1. Where do the Rebels put the taun taun poop?

2. What do they use to remove stubborn stains?

3. Does Vader need Viagra?

4. Do lightsaber's ever run out of light?

5. If there's a forest moon of Endor, is there a desert, tropical, frozen, and temperate moon of Endor?

6. Am I truely bored or do I just have nothing to do at work?

#4 actually has an answer, I think. If I remember correctly, a lightsaber is a continuously looping beam. To give a vague idea of what I mean, think of what would happen if you had had two mirrors and placed a laser between them so that it reflected went back and forth, except obviously alot more technologically advanced. tongue

I was thinking more along the lines of process by which he sleeps. I think he'd be more likely to use Jedi meditation, which some forms can be strong enough to put the user in a nigh comatose state in order to regenerate energy.

I favor the idea that he sleeps while standing around looking intimidating at the Emperor's shoulder, though. tongue It seems that he has to spend a lot of time standing around quietly while Palpy does various things, so if I were him in that situation, I'd sneak a nap.

That certainly puts a new spin on the term "silent sentry." happy

he must do both his eating and his pooping in there.

Ok, this then is the real reason the officers are afraid to go talk with Vader.

This could also be the reason Ozzel choked to death as I assume Vader has some connection to the ventilation system of the ship while inside his chamber.

I would go with the Vader sleeping standing up arguement. If you had a broken neck, you'd have a hell of a time getting up and down everytime you needed a nap.

On another note, I like what David Prowse said about his time spent doing nothing in a Vader suit. He said that quite often, while the other actors were plodding along with serious acting lines, he was humming a tune to himself, quitely smiling behind the mask and thinking about how ridiculous the whole story was.

Vader does sleep, but you see he sleep walks and talks. So pretty much the entire triolgy he is sleeping. As for the suit, he has an entire closet back on Coruscant filled with black costumes. He even has a dress red pair for those special occasions with Palpatine.
