I have started to believe Vader was living on borrowed time during the OT. That he actually wouldn't have survived being burned alive, but since he couldn't die until he balanced the Force, the Force kept him alive (or allowed him to survive) until he destroyed the Sith, thereby balancing the Force. When he does, by killing Palpatine, he feels that it's his time to go.

The Emperor's lightning fried his suit. Simple enough.

He's dying before that.. that's why when vader asked luke to take off his mask(or whatever he said) luke says you'll die and vader say's nothing can stop that now.I believe it was already near.I dont think he suffocated..or i might be wrong..been known to happen..

And what would Vader have done had he lived? It was the end of the movie
and the end of the trilogy.
Was he supposed to party with the Rebels on Endor or go back to, uh, go back to......,
uh, where would he have gone back to? He had nowhere to go and nothing to do. For all we know, he lived on a Star Destroyer. He had to sit in his meditation chamber to shave, shower, talk on his cell phone. He apparently didn't have a house or apartment anywhere on any planet. He didn't know his kids. He didn't have a woman. He didn't have any other kids by another woman.
Should GL have let him live and hang out with Luke and Leia and were they to have designed a new, benevolent-looking suit for Vader different from his Sith Lord suit?
Then they all go to family therapy to resolve past issues such as child abandonment, for starters. Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Live would he their therapist. And they all live happily ever after. If he lived, he could've had a reality show like Hogan Knows Best, or Run's House. He could've written a book and been on the Oprah Winfrey Book Club thingy she has. Vader would be doing a book-signing tour. He'd be on The David Letterman show. Dr Phil would've had him on his show. Jerry Springer would be calling him. The Food Network would want him to do a cooking show. But then Dog The Bounty Hunter would be after him. Then Vader would be on Court TV. The possibilities are enormous. This is all EU stuff. But, still.
Had Vader ived, anyone from Alderaan not on the planet when it was destroyed probably would've tried to kill Vader if they had the chance. Then Luke protects his father but Luke is a Jedi and in the Rebel Alliance and other members of the Alliance that want Vader dead are in a conflict with Luke, then another fight or war breaks out. That's another EU novel right there.
Now that I think about it, why not have Vader live? He redeemed himself. Mo oe is perfect. Everyone deserves another chance. Come on, GL.
He was old and crippled and was struck with force-lightning. (Am I suppose to capitalize force?) Vader probably didn't even have any will to live anymore anyhow. He was a tragic character and him living would've made him really not a tragic character.
It was the end. Just think of the song The End by The Doors when you watch when Vader dies.

I always thought that Vader was being kept alive as much by the darkside as he was by the suit. So, when Vader kills the Emperor, and turns back to the light, he has defeated the dark side, which causes him to die from the injuries Obi-Wan gave him years ago.
I never believed that it was the Emperor who killed Vader. I see no reason to think that force "lightning" is really electrical by nature. If it were, why don't the Jedi and Vader just wear think rubber soles on their moon boots to insulate themselves from the Emperor's attacks?
I think Vader lets himself die because he has finally learned to "let go".

I disagree. I believe that the lightning absolutely contributed to Vader's death. By frying the very mechanical components that kept him alive, the force lightning virtually killed Vader. However I do agree with the basic idea of your point, in principle. Vader's anger, especially his great hatred for himself, helped sustain him in his suit for all of these years. When he saves his son, is redeemed and kills Sidious, his anger and hatred are relieved. He accepts what he has done, both right and wrong and is at peace. He no longer sees the need to fight for his life. He has hated his very existence since his incarnation as a suited Darth Vader. When he save his son, he feels he has accomplished his purpose and does not fight to stay alive.

"Nothing can stop that now."
In other words, Vader was going to die no matter what because his suit was damaged beyond prompt repair from the force lightning. The instant Palpatine was aware of Vader's betrayal, he made sure that Vader would not survive much longer.
Since he was going to die anyway, Vader figured he may as well speak with his son face to face, without the mask, which only accelerated his death, nothing more. Regarding the Dark Side keeping him alive: If he could do that, he wouldn't need the suit. The suit was keeping him alive before he knew what happened to Padme at the end of ROTS.
IMHO

Leias_love_slave posted:
So basically, you're saying that crippled people should become crippled spirits when they die. The alternative would make "no sense".
Having Anakin's ghost look like Sebastian Shaw is what didn't make sense because his body is too burnt-up and deformed to look like Shaw. Anakin would never see himself as an old man but as the person he used to be before the injuries.
Leias_love_slave posted: Yes, but my original point (that you were responding to) is that Shaw looked like a kind spirit who had been healed of both his physical and emotional wounds.
'Spirit' Hayden still looks like the dark soul who walked into the council chamber where the children were hiding and ignited his lightsaber.

Yeah, well 'spirit' Shaw was no different either since he:
-helped blow up planets
-enslaved the galaxy
-killed off remaining Jedi, Rebel soldiers, and his own imperial officers
-tortured his daughter
-injured his son
-froze a man in carbonite
and
-caused the deaths of countless lives including Owen and Beru.
"Spirit" Hayden was suppose to represent the "never given himself to the Dark Side" version of Anakin Skywalker.
