PMT99 posted: Yeah, well 'spirit' Shaw was no different either since he:
-helped blow up planets
-enslaved the galaxy
-killed off remaining Jedi, Rebel soldiers, and his own imperial officers
-tortured his daughter
-injured his son
-froze a man in carbonite
and
-caused the deaths of countless lives including Owen and Beru.
"Spirit" Hayden was suppose to represent the "never given himself to the Dark Side" version of Anakin Skywalker.
Quoted for Truth. Ok, so Anakin Skywalker, becoming Darth Vader (AKA Christensen) slaughtered a few Younglings in the council chambers. Big..fat..hairy..deal. Darth Vader (Seb Shaw) Stood by and watched MILLIONS if not TRILLIONS of childern die in ANH, this is AFTER he tortures his own daughter, then he goes on to kill yet another Jedi, eventually trying to kill his own son in the trench of the Death Star, freezing his daughter's lover in carbonite, cutting his son's hand off while trying to lure him down the same path he's taken, then near the end, he's become robotic almost in his responses, KNOWING he didn't believe it anymore. Gimme the 'Youngling Killer' over the Mass Murderer anyday of the week. Now, that being said? I worship Vader in the Star Wars Universe, he's the epitomy of what a bad guy is, and Anakin Skywalker? I Worship his ability in the prequels, he's what a Warrior should be. Now. Ontopic:
Why'd Vader die? This should be most obvious: Palpatine fried his suit, he can live without it for a SHORT while, yes, but even that's a moot point: We've seen Mace Windu take such a bombardment as Anakin did in his last moments, and Mace didn't survive nearly as long as Anakin. Palpatine cooked him from the inside out, and killed his suit. Anakin Skywalker was done with this life. The Force in human form wanted no more of what the galaxy had to offer. His will, his suit, his innards. They were shattered, destroyed, and fried. That's why Anakin Skywalker died.

Stood by and watched MILLIONS if not TRILLIONS of childern die in ANH, this is AFTER he tortures his own daughter . . .
So, if Leia had not been his daughter, the horror of the torture would have been less? And why is it that many love to blame Vader for watching the destruction of Alderaan more than blame Tarkin for giving the order in the first place?

Firstly, he got his are chopped off.
Then he got fried as he was trying to throw palpatine down the shaft. the lightning fried the circuits needed to run the suit.

The best that I can come up with is:
It has been said that Vader survived because his hate kept him alive. When he let go of that coupled with the fact that he had been zapped by lot's of lightning that did him in.

its like you never took a scienece class and learned the effects of electricity.
As for Hayden v. Sebastian I hate seeing Hayden in ROTJ, Lucas screwed up the prequels and he needs to keep his screw up seperate from the OT. Plus if Anakin is going to appear young than so should Obi Wan; Anakin should appear old and fatherly to his son not young hot Hayden Christensen. He just doesnt fit with the two other older wiser guys who have learned so much in their lives.

I still don't believe that the force lightning fried his circuits. Here on Earth, we have developed a way to protect sensitive electronics from lightning strikes called a Faraday Cage. We haven't figured out inter-stellar travel or artificial intelligence, but we've figured this out. You would think that Vader, given the fact that he has access to much more advanced technology, and that he was a mechanical genius, could have figured out a way to make his suit lightning proof in the 20 years he wore it.
We've even made suits like this:

but it's Force lightning. Surely it won't be stopped by puny technical safety measures.

Yes, but we have seen it absorbed and deflected by light sabres. So there is some technology availble that can stop it.

I can't believe this is being debated... for six pages no less!!!
I didn't read it all, but here is the scoop:
I saw this movie when I was 10. I thought (and still thought) that the Emperor's lightning (not Emperor Palpatine's Force Lightning - cause that wasn't around when I was 10) killed Darth Vader (not Anakin Skywalker - we didn't care about the whole Anakin/Vader thing when we were kids). If it fried and nearly killed Luke at long range, it surely could kill Darth Vader at short range, with or without electronic components. I never thought about his suit, all I saw was him getting a REALLY good jolt of lightning to his head. The lightning that was meant to KILL Luke ("now young Skywalker... you WILL die...") no just toy with him and make him suffer.
So in short from the 10 year old perspective: "Killing" lightning at short range = death
Fin.

I always thought that Palpatine was just toying with Luke, and that he never really given him a fatal dose of the lightning yet. I think he was going to slowly increase the power of the lightning to give Luke a very slow death. When Vader picked him up he attacked with the full fatal lightning.

It was the lightning shorting out his life support suit. This is explained by Darth Vader's strained breathing after killing the Emperor and the skeletal effects as he's doing it. His suit is failing him and his suit was the only thing keeping him alive after ROTS.

I think that, if I may cite Rise of the Dark Lord the prequel to a new hope, his suit was basically all that kept him alive physically but the dark side did have a role to play. Palpatine lied as stated in the book and the Dark Side made Vader strong but did not animate him, it simply made him continue, his pure hatred for ObeWan on Mustafar is what allowed him to survive the trauma of his wounds initially. The suit simply maintained him. His mask provided a breathable atmoshpere but a pressure seal was required hence the hyperbaric chamber he had on his Star Destroyer that kept him alive sans mask. His burned lungs needed a super oxygenated atmosphere. You'll notice his lightsaber technique centers around protecting the control panel on his chest. IN ESB he uses a one handed style to indicate he has no fear of Luke but in ROTJ he plays it close to home and protects his panel.
Also, He laments directly after being imprisoned in the suit that it was a sick joke by palpatine putting his most vulnerable electronics on the outside in a very obvious place. The force lightning not only further destroyed his body ruining what little tissue he had left it also completely overloaded his electronic systems and destroyed sensitive cyborg interface components like his lung implants that fed oxygen to his bloodstream. Once they failed it was strike one. The hatred that kept him sustained in the Dark side began to subside and he began to lose the strenght and vitality he had. As he turned to Anakin again the mortally wounded Jedi realized that he no longer wanted to live as the shell, the shadow of his former self and resigned himself to become one with the force. The mask removal simply hastened the departure.

I don't recall the book saying that Palpatine lied to him.
