Has there ever been a question you wanted answered about the Classic Trilogy, but you weren’t sure where to ask or didn’t want to create a new thread about it? Have you ever been watching the film again and suddenly thought “hey, wait a minute, what’s that about?”

This is the place to ask those questions. It’s a catch-all for the “hey, I have a couple quick questions” type of threads that are posted on a regular basis. It puts everything in one place and keeps the forum nice and tidy. And hey, your question may have already been answered earlier in the thread, so it also becomes a bit of a reference archive for little tidbits about the Classic Trilogy.

So… let’s get this party started. Ask away!

I was wondering. In ROTJ you can see Vader is holding Lukes saber while Luke is in hiding (in their duel), in a scene that has had dialogue and further scenes cut, it features in the latest star wars magazine in the U.K. however do you know why the scene was cut? and why have they left Vader holding the saber still in the DVD? its clear to see it's Luke's saber in his hand.

I've actually wondered too. This site has some more info about the scene itself, but it really doesn't say why the scene was cut. The best guess I have is that it'd seem repetitive to have Luke toss away his saber twice (originally he tossed it aside just before that as well). Then he draws his saber to his hand with the Force - which theoretically could still have happened based on the way the moview as cut. I guess Lucas figured not many people would notice it.

I remember in the Empire of Dreams documentary it syays that Alan Ladd jr, the 20th Century Fox executive that got Star Wars off the ground, had to quit during the production of ESB. If he got Star Wars made, and eventually, a whole lot of money, why did he have to quit???
And another question concerning Star Wars production. Why was Gary Kurtz replaced for ROTJ???

I know that Ladd became President of MGM... so I'd say he got a decent deal out of it. I don't know any details as to why he left though... anyone know?

Kurtz was replaced because he had a lot of differing opinions from Lucas about the ideas for ROTJ... one of the biggest ones being the Second Death Star. Lucas also put Kurtz at blame for ESB running way over budget.

In terms of the Alan Ladd question, I read years ago (I'm sorry, but I don't remember for sure where it was) that one of the reasons Ladd left Fox was because some of the other executives and board of directors felt he did not make enough money for the studio from Star Wars and its sequels.

Obviously ANH and its sequels were phenomenally successful and made a bunch of money for everyone involved, especially Lucas. Fox studios had, I think, its best year ever. But some of the execs saw the $ that the movie was bringing in and felt more could have gone to the studio. When Lucas went to negotiate specific deals for ESB and ROTJ, he was obviously in a great bargaining position and in the contract kept much of the profits for Lucasfilm. Ladd probably made the best deal he could, but others felt differently, and he eventually had to leave.

As Empire of Dreams points out, this hurt Fox in the long run. Lucas liked Ladd and without him at fox brought the Indiana Jones series to a different studio.

In ROTJ, Vader throws his saber at luke, toppling the scaffold(or whatever it was), but in the very next scene, Vader magically has his lightsaber again. IS this more bad editing on the part of the OT?

He probably just called it back to his hand after the camera switched to Luke or Palpy.

The next time you watch that scene pay close attention to when Vader walks down the stairs. You will hear the sound of his lightsaber igniting. This should mean that he retrieved it with the force since he didn't bend or anything like that.

Why would Lucas make Greedo if he just lasted a few minutes?

Because introducing Greedo set ups up the Han & Jabba sub plot which plays a major part in each movie of the CT. Also gives us an insight into Han's cocky, gunslinger character.

On a side note, it also gave Lucas an alien he could use in the background for several scenes thereafter wink

He realized that everyone has evil inside of them, and that maybe fighting and killing Vader isn't the answer to what he wants.
