Same here. Vader wasn't really out to kill the guy, but rather to make a point. I think his "as you wish" was, like you said, just more of an "okay, whatever, it doesn't matter because I got my point across anyway". The look on Motti's face after he's let go from the choke kind of confirms this, I think, at least in a retcon sort of way.

I'm sure what I'm about to ask has been covered already, but the thought of scanning hundreds of pages is just too daunting...so, apologies in advance...

ANYhoo, about Star Wars: A New Hope--there's a shot during the scene where Luke is buying C-3PO and R2-D2 from the Jawas which has always bugged me. It's right after the first Astromech droid Luke picks blows its top. Luke yells something like "What about that blue one over there?" off-camera while you see a repeat of a shot of R2-D2 turning his 'head' towards the viewer. The fact that the shot IS an obvious repeat plus which you can see the droid that just blew up still standing whole and well in the background strikes me as one of those genuine oops moments that should be fixed if possible if you're going to be dickering around with the movie. Has it been fixed already, or will it be? I last saw ANH on TV about a year ago and the repeat shot was still there. I have no idea which ANH version was airing, though--I've lost track!

ANH-

- Have a Death Star opening scene like ROTJ where we see all of the craft flying around the DS with the Imperial March theme, and then cut to the meeting with Tarkin and Vader.

- Fix Luke's lightsaber

- Make the destruction of Alderaan more dramatic. I mean, millions of people died! The scene needs to be slowed down and possibly have a shot of inside Alderaan. I know this is kind of dark for ANH, but it would be so much better.

- Make the Death Star computer readout more modern like ROTJ.

- My main problem I have with the final Death Star battle is the scale. You would think there would be more TIE fighters and rebel fighters for this mission. I don't think Lucas has to do much, but just add CGI aircraft in the background behind the scenes of Luke/Biggs/Wedge to make it look like a huge battle is going on. Also remove the line that says something like we count 30 ships Lord Vader.

The only problem with adding in more rebel fighters is that it would defeat the purpose of the scene. There could be a few more, but you really couldn't throw a whole fleet of them in to make a huge battle. The purpose of the scene is to show that a rag tag group of poorly trained and under manned rebels were able to defeat the superior forces of the Empire. If you add in a lot more rebel fighters, it takes away from that idea.

Yes I believe you are correct. But I think it's possible to just show the ships fighting in the background with the original footage to make it more look a dogfight battle like in ROTJ.

Putting in more ships "to make it more like ROTJ" is a ridiculous idea. Why not take ships out of ROTJ to "make it more like 'ANH'"? Why not insert asteroids into the 'ANH' sequence to "make it more like ESB"? Or insert fleets of droid fighters to "make it more like TPM"?

Or, alternately, you could leave the sequence it alone and thus make it more like itself.

Yeah but making it more like ROTJ doesn't make sense in a story context. By ROTJ, the Alliance fleet was much, much bigger because the Tarkin Doctrine that led to the destruction of Alderaan backfired and caused a lot more systems to join the rebellion. In contrast, in ANH they were a group of ragtag rebels that had virtually no support. If you add in more ships, you end up taking away from that.

Don't know which of the following points have been mentioned already, but meh:

ANH - Fix the lightsaber coloring. At some points during Luke's training, the blade is green. We have the technology, I say we use it. Also, Jabba the Hut could look a lot better than he does right now in the scene with Han.

ESB - Make the shots of the Cloud City... antenna pit thing (Don't know the technical term) more realistic. At first glance you don't notice, but after a couple of times the painted backgrounds, while very beautiful, start to look pretty fake.

RotJ - Likewise with the pit the Emperor falls in. Also, stick Sebastian Shaw back in, or at least an older-looking (Either via digital enhancement or make-up) Hayden Christiansen.

Personally, I think they should just get rid of that scene altogether. I think it's redundant considering it's basically a rehash of the Greedo scene a few minutes earlier, and I think his introduction that early in the trilogy takes a bit away from his introduction in Return of the Jedi. I prefer it when he's talked about for so long, and then seen in ROTJ.

^ ^ ^ Agreed! The Jabba scene 1) is redundant, 2) ruins the "reveal" of the Falcon, 3) spoils Jabba's intro in ROTJ, and 4) is poorly animated. Also, Ford is not exactly at his best here; it's his weakest scene as an actor, almost as if he knew this was destined to be an outtake.

IMO (not that this will ever happen), Lucas ought to either excise the scene altogether OR have the animators do one final, superlative version of Jabba, meanwhile altering Jabba's dialogue in places so it isn't a precise repeat of Greedo's from the previous scene.

You've clearly missed my point. Basically all the shots you see are of one individual ship. I'm just saying add something to the background to look like more is going on. For example, as you would see in Coruscant with background shots of ships. I don't want to add anything that would change the story. Lucas added scenes of the rebel fighters approaching the Death Star and they looked great.

Several of us have already observed that that would change the point of the sequence -- which, once again, is that there are a small number of fighters going up against the massive power of the Death Star. Insert more ships zipping about in the background and suddenly the intent, feel and look of the sequence are changed for the worse.

Actually we may have been misunderstanding what PW was saying, either through our misinterpretation or PW's lack of clarity ( tongue ). What PW is saying, at least in the last post, is not that more ships should be added beyond the current number that is already there, but rather some that are already in the battle should be seen flying behind other ships just so you know that they're there and it reminds you that it's an actual battle. Doing that could work, if done correctly.

I consider it unnecessary and distracting! Does no one else appreciate the stark look of deep space behind the medium close-ups of the various pilots? There are already numerous shots which feature multiple Rebel ships. Any confusion as to whether a battle is occurring exists solely in PadmeWindu's mind.
