Due to the success of the PT CBC discussions, I would like to discuss ROTJ chapter by chapter on the DVD. There are 47 chapters to discuss over the next eight months, excluding Chapter 1: Opening Logos, Chapter 2: Return of the Jedi and Chapter 50: End Credits.

Each discussion will last 5 days. At the end of 5 days, the following chapter will be posted.

Chapter 13: The Emperor Arrives
DISCUSSION: October 18, 2005 – October 22, 2005
DVD TIME INDEX: 37:43 – 39:30

Synopsis:
Palpatine, Emperor of the Galactic Empire arrives at the Death Star II. The entire legion and commanders await his arrival. Vader kneels before him and Palpatine tells him to rise. Vader says the Death Star will be on schedule. Palpatine is pleased and knows that Vader wishes to seek out his son. He tells him patience. Luke will come to him and everything is going according to plan. END OF CHAPTER

Opinion:
A very crucial chapter in Jedi occurs with the first physical appearance of Palpatine in over 20 years. Now that Palpatine’s on the Death Star, business picks up and all hell will break loose in this climatic episode.

This scene is similar to the Dooku and Sidious scene at the end of AOTC in content and structure. Two important moments with master and apprentice and arriving ship. This one is more powerful with the struggle between Palpatine, Vader and Luke is played out.

I admit this is the scene that turned ROTJ off for me. Palpatine freaked me out as a child. The first angle of him aboard Death Star II is chilling enough. We know chronologically, he is the baddest man in the universe and Vader is the tragic character we must sympathize with.

Both characters are playing both sides. Palpatine does have the dominant hand and Vader is the weaker one, yet both are being manipulative in their own way. It reflects the Emperor’s Message from TESB and their relationship since. Good chapter.

Yes! Finally we're off of Tatooine! And we jump right into what Star Wars is really about - and not only that, but with such a great scene, too. And it contains everything. The political/war matters of the Death Star and the Force-side of things with their talk about young Skywalker. Exactly the kind of reminder we need after chewing on all that sand since the last visit on the Death Star.

And it shows the Empire's desire to be "bigger" all the time. Vader arrives in a shuttle escorted by two TIEs and lands in some hangar where a couple of squads greet him.
The Emperor arrives to a huge TIE fighter show off formation flight into the big hangar with half the Death Star personell greeting him cool
It's one of my favorite images from Star Wars and I think it was one of the more prominent ones from RotJ

btw, I love how the synopsis always sounds so unintentionally funny (even if it's intentional) tongue

It's an impressive scene. When I first saw it, I thought the Emperor was a weak frail old man, inferior looking to Vader. Then you sense as soon as he talks the evil that will follow.

First time you also see Vader giving a bit of respect. thinking well apart from Tarkin.

For me the pace of the film starts to move in ROTJ from this scene.

One of those scenes that really are a lot more impressive post ROTS for me. We've seen what he can do there, and he's barely appeared in EP IV and V. This is the great entrance of Darth Sidious in the OT and I think it's done beautifully.

I always thought it was cool that the Emperor had a much larger escort of fighters and honor guard/assembly. It shows one of two things:

1) Vader, being the hated and feared enforcer of the Emperor's will, doesn't get a heck of a lot of respect from the military.

OR...

2) Vader doesn't bother with tons of pomp and circumstance. He's all business. Whereas Palapatine is Emperor and you had best honor him the right way!

It's also cool how we don't really see Palpatine's whole face in this scene. It makes him seem very mysterious. And you wonder what this seemingly decrepit old man can do that makes Vader subservient to him.

What really got to me about this scene, is its visual design, everything looks really sleek and fitting for the Star Wars era. I mean the place is really shiny. But apart from the look i think that the discussion between Vader and the Emperor is a turning point in the whole movie. Here is where we find out that Vader really wants to find Luke, and Palpatine gives him the ok. This scene shows Vaders essential respect and obedience towards Palpatine. I mean you caught a little of it from when Vader was speaking to him in the Star Destroyer in Episode V, but this time in the Death Star you physically see Palpatine and you get the whole Apprentice-Master feel.

This is a great scene, it would have been funny though if just for kicks, Vader choked an Imperial officer to impress Palpatine. laugh

Vader was not expected. It was an unannounced inspection.

Jerjerrod: " Lord Vader, this is an unexpected pleasure. We are honored by your presence. "

Vader: " You may dispense with the pleasantries, Commander; I am here to put you back on schedule. "

Palpatine's visit was known, thanks to Vader's announcement. There was time to form and deploy an appropriate honor guard complete with Sidebouys ( Google that term along with " US Navy " ) and aerial formations.

I love this scene. Here we have the two most important figureheads of evil in the galaxy, grouped together in one place. It's the third film in a trilogy. You can feel it in your bones, these two monsters will not leave the Death Star alive. You may not know the specific details of their demise, but the set up for the ultimate battle between good and evil is here. But knowing all this, it's impossible to look at the mass of perfectly disciplined soldiers, quickly compare them to the Rebel rabble we see on Hoth, and think the forces of evil have the upper hand. Now you know it for sure, not only is the conflict going to be settled here, in this steel moon, but the battle will be spectacular on all three fronts (I'm of course referring to Endor-Ground, Endor-Space, and the Throne Room duel). This scene no longer sends tingles of anticipation down my spine, but I still know something awe-inducing is coming up.

All that remains to be seen of the calm before the storm, is how the Rebels plan to defeat the Empire...

Although I have preference for ESB, I think that this scene is my favourite in the whole series. We finally get to see the emperor, the boss of the guy that everyone is afraid of. It gives the watcher (assuming they have not seen the PT) some insight into different parts of Vader's personality.

I love the imagery with the guards lined up, the black and white with the red. I have the lego set for this. It's awesome.

And let's not forget the Emperor himself. He is a really neat character. But I'll get into that towards the end of the chapters.....

This scene, along with it's counterpart on Dagobah, are among the best in the Saga and set the stage for the climax. The arrival of Palpatine reveals the evil master of Vader, who is probably the best-known villian in film history. The music segues from the bombastic Imperial March into the chilling Emperor's Theme as Palpatine begins his final manipulation of Anakin Skywalker.

This is such a great scene.
We check back in with the Empire after a long sequence on Tatooine.

The first true appearance of the Emperor, is a grand enterance.
I love the way he lands and his discussion with Vader set the rest of the film in motion.
it shows the Emperor/Vader dynamic as well, Vader kneels before him and is clearly is underling.

I love any and all emperor scenes cause there are so few of them!!

One of my favorite scenes to watch in the film

Especially interesting the line "rise, my friend". He only called Jedi his "friends" before. Tells a little bit about the true nature of what he thinks about their relationship.
