In a draft for A New Hope Biggs comes back to visit Luke. When they start talking about The Academy Biggs informs Luke that he is leaving to join the rebellion. Luke is shocked. This move by Biggs only makes him want to go off to become a pilot more. Luke would have probbaly planned on deflecting like Biggs.. but we all know what happens when those two old droids show up.

Dewbacks. I've always wondered - were those rentals? They must have been, right? The stormtroopers landed and rented them to traverse the desert? There's no way they had those on the Star Destroyer is there?

Well honestly? I always thought when Luke said he'll join the academy is that he'll join a flight school, one that trains people to be pilots, and after you finish you can fly whatever you want. You're just a pilot. You're not in the Empire's service!

Here's another possibility: maybe he was telling uncle dumbhead (sorry - I had an uncle like this and I don't like him -) aheam, maybe he was telling his uncle that he was going to enroll in the imperial academy but was actually just planning on going off to learn from the Rebellion.
Uncle Owen seems very "keep your nose clean" and wouldn't think to kindly on Luke joining the rebels; but joining the legitimate military, now that's not something most by-the-book parents can object to. I think saying he was "going to the academy" was just the only way he could leave Tatooine without having a big fight with his uncle (the only link to his father he had).

TLJ Edit: I was posting the rules snippet to prevent this kind of thing, pointing out that a rule like that exist. The rules say not to shoot down anything just because it's the ever evil EU. There are dozens of other ways to circumvent that and keep discussing things even though an EU answer has been given, they're all just not quite as easy as a good old movie-forum-EU-rant. It's been months since I last handed out a Strike.

The staff of this message board, if it's limited to myself. That is, if you can call it tyrannical when I'm doing what I've been doing quite often in my close to two years (not that wasting so much time here is an accomplishment). I'm just keeping posts within the rules.
Yes, I do edit opinions if they are contained within a rant about a subject that's very well covered in our rules and presented in a way (and line of logic, too) I have seen almost more often than you have posted.
