Due to the success of the PT CBC discussions, I would like to discuss ROTJ chapter by chapter on the DVD. There are 47 chapters to discuss over the next eight months, excluding Chapter 1: Opening Logos, Chapter 2: Return of the Jedi and Chapter 50: End Credits.

Each discussion will last 5 days. At the end of 5 days, the following chapter will be posted.

Chapter 49: Celebration
DISCUSSION: May 6, 2006 - May 10, 2006
DVD TIME INDEX: 125:20 - 127:48

Synopsis:
There is celebration on Bespin, Tatooine, Naboo and finally Coruscant where the Emperor's statue is finally taken down. Back on Endor, Ewoks are beating on Stormtrooper helmets. Lando runs in and hugs Han and Chewie. Luke embraces his sister. Obi-Wan and Yoda appear as Force-Ghosts, followed by a younger Anakin. Luke goes back to the celebration. And the Galaxy Far, Far Away lived happily every after. END OF CHAPTER - END OF STAR WARS - EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI

Opinion:
This is the end of the Saga and Return of the Jedi. Like ANH and TPM, this is an up ending. It's not some big ceremony like the other two up endings were, but still it bookends the saga in a memorable way.

Honestly after the PT, I don't look at this as a celebration for the Rebellion, but more so a freedom from ambition and corruptness on Anakin’s part. He has finally reached his ultimate goal. He has defeated death. By retaining his identity, he can live on forever. From a religious point of view, you could say that this is heaven.

This definitlely was extended from the 1983 version. There was a time when there was no intergalactic celebration. It's better now, because after the PT, you can really understand the oppression of the Empire and how the planets were affected. Maybe in a few years they'll add Kashyyyk and Utapau to the lineup.

The other thing and this was quite controversial a few years ago was replacing Shaw with Hayden. I think that this was a wise move. The image you take as a Force-Ghost is your last one in life. Anakin died in ROTS, so he should look like Hayden. Great way to end the movie and series.

When I was a kid, I have to say the old Ewok ending was great. However, as I've got older, I appreciate the "current" ending just as much. Each time I watch this chapter I get a touch excited and teary. It reminds me just how much I love Star Wars and wish there was more. A fitting end to the best Saga of all.

Thanks to you to Moleman for organising these CBC critiques as well happy

Perfect ending to a saga I love.
It's bittersweet.
The goodguys won, but you also get a sense of the loss it took to get here.
The Sith and their Empire are defeated and balance is brought to the Force.
Before the PT, it was a pretty open-ended ending. The Bad guys lost, good guys won, still a bittersweet sense of loss and victory, but apparently there was the possibility of more which is where the EU came in.
You can still have the EU with this ending (not without it having to dance around and explain away the celebrations of course) but for those who just watch the movies, you get a sense of completeness with the added celebrations.
Though I don't hate the EU, I do like this ending to it all better.
I know people simply cannot fathom how I genuinely love this 6 part saga, and to that I say I can't explain it. But it's not out of being brainwashed or loving uber boom booms over substance. It did connect with me, and I will forever appreciate this epic, mythical story happy

The old ending was funny and (too) light-hearted. Well, probably to make it seem very happy. I don't think 'happy' is really appropriate here. It's too weak.

The new one adds a layer of meaning and the new (absolutely gorgeous) music changes the tone. It's still a victory celebration, but it has some melancholy to it. For me it's says "It's finally over" instead "yay, we pwned teh Empire".

I almost cried a few times while watching this ending. And yeah, with the Prequels it gets one more moment - you feel a lot more for Obi-Wan and Yoda, because you knew what they've been through to get to this moment.

Yes, and there is Anakin. But I don't think I'll need to comment on that wink

However when I get that sad I usually just end up whatching another STAR WARS movie and I'm right back into it. happy happy happy

I loved the victory celebration theme in this chapter. Seeing planets like Bespin, Tatooine, Naboo, and even Coruscant. The most notable change in this movie was definitely when they changed the ghost of Anakin Skywalker from Sebastian Shaw to Hayden Christensen.

Palpatine is the Sith lord we've been looking for. After the death of Count Dooku, Anakin became his new apprentice.
I'm a Jedi, like my father before me.
May the Force be with you.

People have been down on the SE's, but the new ROTJ ending is byfar the best alteration in the OT. The old "Yub Yub" music sounds child like and juvenile but the new music is mch more poignant and fitting. Also Hayden as Anakin's spirit fits now after having seen ROTS.

Hopefully for the Archival Edition, Lucas can add Kashyyk to the list of celebrating planets. happy

I was of the belief that Vader became Anakin again when the helmet was removed by Luke and as such, that was how he looked when he passed. Truthfully, I felt Hayden's ghost still looked pretty evil.

And as a kid, I couldn't understand why Obi-Ghost and Yoda-Ghost didn't start beating on Anakin-Ghost when he appeared. I would be pretty ticked if I would've had to simply accept Anakin is a nice guy now and his "killing me" as a case of bad judgment. Then again, I was 12 at the time. tongue

It's a great ending except for the final shot which completely ruins the film for me. Lando Calrissian might as well be winking at the camera. I just think it's God-awful.

I like the Ewok music better. "Celebrate the love." I wish there was a way where GL could include both pieces of music. Start w/ the Victory Celebrate and then when we return to Endor switch over the the Ewok music.

I don't get how one can like Yub Nub as an ending to the Star Wars Saga. To like the song as the silly thing it is (like Numa Numa), okay, sure.

But it's so... awful.

I could tolerate it as source music far in the background when Leia breaks the news, but please, nowhere else.

The Ewok Feast/Part of the Tribe track on the RotJ SE soundtrack is much better Ewok music

Hayden does look a bit odd in the OT, especially in those new Jedi robes he has on.

But I do like the music, I've only heard the yub-yub song once.

Thanks for going these CBC chapters moleman, I'm going to miss them!

I like Yub Nub a lot for what it is as a song.
Not as a way to end a six part series full of everything that was in it.
The new music is grander in scope, more reflective.
That, and I'm not to keen on english lyrics in a SW movie. I like the wordless choice better. It fits in better I think.

I absolutely agree, I always hated the "Yub yub" music in the original release. It felt like someone just threw it together with a Sesame Street beat, there were absolutely no emotions evoked by it. The new ending, and the addition of Hayden as Anakin's spirit totally fits.

The way that Anakin's funeral pyre transitioned into the local Endor celebration, which then went to galaxy wide celebrations, finally to return back to Endor made everything personal, yet showed how much was lost and gained in the rebellion. It wasn't just a few people who suffered and stood to now benefit, but a whole galaxy. Yet, the galaxy is made up of people, individuals who made it all happen. The music in the new versions just reflected all of this perfectly, and it still brings tears to my eyes when I see and hear it. The original version never did that to me.

Oh, and on another note about the Endor celebration: I don't know how many noticed, but this is the only time that Han greets Luke completely whole heartedly, without a trace of jealousy in his expression or demeanor. He greets him like the brother he is, now that he knows, instead of a competitor for Leia's interest. He visibly shows that he is proud of Luke and his accomplishments as well. I loved that mini-scene, too. it was sweet.
