I never seen any means of moving the ship faster-then-light or seen things like jets or thrust rockets on the sides of the Death Star.

But the only way it could have gotten to Alderan so fast was with Hyperdrive.

So were is the hyperdrive located and how do they make it work?

I often wondered that too.

Yes, it's the only way the Death Star could be effective. Should a planetary system know the impending arrival of the Death Star and the doom that would inevitably occur, they would have time to evacuate. Only through hyperspace ability could the Death Star be any kind of threat. Just my opinion.

I think the Empire uses a giant "super-slingshot" (as seen in the EU possibly?) to catapult the DS across the cosmos.

I had to read this forum every day for over 2 years now - you'll pick up on stuff like that tongue (unless you were being sarcastic - can't tell wink )
although, this bit in particular I knew before... no idea where, though. Behind the Magic perhaps?

Yes, yes it does. The old West End Games Death Star Technical Manual has a great cross-section diogram of the Death Star I.

I would hardly call it scary without hyperdrive capability.

"THAT'S IT! NOW YOU'VE DONE IT! SOON WE WILL BE BLOWING UP YOUR PLANET!" - Tarkin to outer Rim World representative.

"Sir, Death Star sublight engines fired up at full throttle. We should reach the target world in 1138 standard years." - Death Star Staff

"We are on our way now, you rebel scum. May your children's, children's, children's, children's, children's, children's, children quake in fear as my great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson brings the wrath of this battlestation to bear upon your homeworld." - Tarkin

"Do your worst Grand Moff. Our sun is expected to go Supernova in 1100 standard years, give or take 100 years. If you hurry and are lucky, you'll make it to kill us before that event." - Rim World Rep.

Hyperdrives don't work like jet engines or thrusters, so you wouldn't necessarily see them anyway.

Even though it had a hyperdrive, the size of the thing must've made navigation hell for the nav computers. :P
