CLASSIC TRILOGY FORUM RULES, THREAD INDEX, AND REFERENCE GUIDE [Version 4.0]

Welcome to the latest edition of the Classic Trilogy Forum Rules, Index and Reference Guide! This thread will be broken down into three parts:
  1. Rules: The general rules and regulations.

  2. Thread Index: Links to great discussions.

  3. Reference Guide: Answers to questions that are asked on a regular basis (FAQ), and more.

---------------1. CLASSIC TRILOGY FORUM RULES---------------

While posting in the CT forum, there are some general guidelines and rules that you must understand and follow.
  • Redundancy Policy: Please check the thread index before creating a new thread. The moderating staff would appreciate it if all members make sure there is not an existing thread on the same subject before posting a new topic. It is a small effort that will benefit the forum as a whole. If a thread listed in the Index is locked due to the auto-locking feature, please feel free to PM one of the moderators to have it unlocked for discussion.

  • Canon Policy: Since many questions asked in this forum have both film and EU answers, it is easy for threads to degrade into a Canon War between fans of only the films and fans of both the films and the EU. Any thread in which this happens will be closed. Please do not state that the EU is 100% canon or the ONLY correct answer to a question; please do not state that any answer or theory must be rejected because it originates in the EU. Users are expected to respect the fact that the point of view of the other is one of many possibilities.

  • Version Policy: Since this is the Classic Trilogy forum, it is a given that there will be disagreements over the quality and preferences of the Original Trilogy, Special Editions, and the Prequel Trilogy, and their relationship to each other. In the same vein as the Canon Wars, we ask that both sets of fans respect one another’s opinions. Keep discussions civil, and do not let them degenerate into an endless, circular argument. Treat your fellow fans with respect, even if you disagree vehemently with them. Try to focus on the films and avoid labeling the fans.

Also, if you start a thread, O-OT, SE, and PT discussion can be excluded if you simply clarify it in the opening post (even though it might need some reminders along the way), e.g. "What did Vader's revelation/The duel(s) on the Death Star(s)/Obi-Wan's speech on Dagobah/Boba Fett's death/The Emperor's death/Leia's Hippie Dress mean before the SE/PT/EU/Ewok movies?". Discussion of Padmé, the rule of two, Dark Empire, Cindel, etc. would be off-topic. Most threads can accomodate discussion of all versions, though we don't want to have "Version Wars" break out (i.e. into trolling/baiting/flaming). Yes, there are some topics that warrant discussion from a single version POV, and those threads will be allowed on a case-by-case basis. Though not required, an advance PM to bounce an idea off a moderator wouldn't be a bad idea.

  • Literature and TV Spoilers: The Classic Trilogy forum has a "blacked-out spoilers allowed" policy for literature and the upcoming TV series. This means that the only time spoilers are allowed is if you use the following the format tags around the part of your post containing spoilers:
    [color=black][hl=black]Spoiler-text[/hl][/color]
Literature spoilers are any piece of information found in a book, comic, or video game that was not previously known. This information will be considered a spoiler for one month after the release of said material. TV spoilers are anything from the TV show that is not known prior to it being aired. Since the shows are a one-time thing, the spoiler policy for them will be lifted once the show has aired board-time (PST).

  • Forum-wide rules:

No flaming: Do not insult another user.
No baiting: Do not post things with the intention of angering another user.
No trolling: Do not attempt to incite a negative response by flaming, fishing for flames or posting negative/offensive messages.
No spamming: Do not post many times consecutively, post simply to up your post count, post identical threads/posts across several forums, or otherwise worthless messages. Soliciting (trading, selling or buying) and advertising also fall under spamming. This also includes "in before the lock" or "lock this thread" type of posts.
No posting inappropriate material: Swearing, porn, etc - stuff you wouldn’t show your grandparents, not-safe-for-work, or anything that violates the TOS/ROC or any other forum-wide rule is inappropriate. Please see the Official Profanity and Disallowed Words List for further clarification of what words aren't allowed.
Moderation: While it is helpful for users to redirect (link to) appropriate threads and generally keep focus on topics, please do not attempt to moderate the behavior of other users. If you see something that upsets you or violates the rules, the best course of action is to contact a moderator.

For a more complete list of rules, please read the Rules of the Jedi Council Forums.
The administration holds the right to edit or remove posts at their own discretion as per the Terms of Service/Rules of Conduct.

---------------3. CLASSIC TRILOGY FORUM REFERENCE GUIDE---------------

This section will provide you with answers to some questions that come up pretty often in the Classic Trilogy forum. Although this used to be an FAQ section, we’re seeing if it works better as a reference guide providing information rather than answering direct questions.

  • "Princess" Leia. Leia's title comes from her being part of the Royal Family of Alderaan, not the offspring of the monarch of Naboo. Bail Organa is more than just a Senator; he's also the Viceroy and First Chairman of the Royal House of Alderaan. His children would therefore be royal too--even if he adopted ones. It has yet to be revealed whether the offspring of Naboo royalty are afforded similar status - it's quite possible that they're not, since Naboo elects their royalty, and that royalty has term limits. Padmé, after all, was not Queen when she gave birth to the twins. (Star Wars Insider #60)

  • Memories of the droids. One thing that often bugs people is how/why the characters who interacted with the droids in the Prequels do not recognize them in the Classic Trilogy. This can be explained one of two ways:
[blockquote]1. They do remember them. Owen and Ben do remember the droids - they just choose not to say anything about it. It would be rather awkward if Owen or Ben told Luke that he remembered either of the droids being owned by his father. Additionally, Owen seemed rather intent on having their memories erased - he knew that they may still know about the past.
    2. Droids are very common. Although the droids seem interesting and unique to us, they’re very common in the Star Wars galaxy. That being said, would you remember a toaster you owned 20 years before that was painted a different color?[/blockquote]
People also often ask why R2-D2 doesn’t tell what he knows to Luke or anyone else. One reason is that R2 may not even know what many of the events that happen consisted of. For example, he wasn’t with Anakin during the Jedi Temple slaughter, and he waited by the ship on Mustafar. As far as knowledge of Darth Vader, R2 wouldn’t even know it was him in the suit.

  • Luke’s familiarity with Dagobah. The most logical reason that Luke felt "something familiar about this place" upon landing on Dagobah is that he recognized the presence of Yoda (albeit subconsciously). Yoda was present at his birth, and therefore may have left an imprint in Luke’s mind.

  • Leia remembering Padmé. There are just as many theories as to why Leia remembered Padmé as there are people screaming that it is a plot hole. For various "explanations" of Leia’s seemingly inexplicable memory, read this entry from the blog of Paul Ens, Official Site webmaster.

  • Obi-Wan’s Jedi training. "Luke" you will go to the Dagobah system. There you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me." The simple explanation of this line is that Yoda instructed Obi-Wan. Not only does Yoda teach the Younglings before they become apprenticed to a Master, but as the head of the Council, he instructs every Jedi on a regular basis. Obi-Wan did not need to mention Qui-Gon, because it would only further confuse Luke.

  • Yoda’s species. There is no official word on Yoda’s species. It is likely that this will remain to be true in the future.

  • Duration of Luke’s visit to Dagobah. No source is clear on how long Luke stayed on Dagobah (or how long the Falcon took to get to Cloud City). The most common speculation is that it was anywhere from one to three months.

  • Vader’s knowledge of Luke. It is generally accepted that Vader found out that the name of the Rebel who destroyed the Death Star was Skywalker some time shortly following the Battle of Yavin. In the comic book "Vader's Quest" by Darko Macan, the Dark Lord searches for the hero of Yavin and learns from a Rebel that it was Luke Skywalker, his son, who destroyed the Death Star.

  • Stormtrooper hitting his head. This happens while C-3PO and R2-D2 are hiding and the stormtroopers come in. The one on the far right hits his head on the doorway. A sound effect was added for this in the special edition, and Lucas put a brief shot of Jango Fett hitting his head on the Slave I as a joke about the genetics for clumsiness being replicated.

  • Timeline of films. Using Episode IV as year 0 (Battle of Yavin), the timeline is as follows:

TPM: 32 BBY (Before Battle of Yavin)
    AOTC: 22 BBY
    ROTS: 19 BBY
    ANH: 0
ESB: 3-3.5 ABY (After Battle of Yavin)
    ROTJ: 4 ABY

  • Age of Characters. The ages are as follows at the time of Episode IV:

    Anakin/Vader: 42
    Obi-Wan Kenobi: 57
    Luke Skywalker: 19
    Princess Leia: 19
Han Solo: No official sources for Han’s age; anywhere from 25 to 30

  • Emperor’s Dignitaries. These are the men leaving the Imperial Shuttle with Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. They are dignitaries/advisors to the Emperor. Their names are Sate Pestage, Sim Aloo, and Janus Greejatus.

  • The Missing Episode: The original theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1977 was simply called 'Star Wars'. 'Episode IV' and 'A New Hope' did not appear in the crawl until the 1981 theatrical re-release. There is much debate over this, and many people claim to have seen it in 1977. But, it has been confirmed that the first theatrical appearance of 'Episode IV: A New Hope' was 1981 after Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back was released. However, it is said that the 'Art of Star Wars' book from 1978 did indeed feature the words 'Episode IV: A New Hope'.

  • Common abbreviations.

    CT/OT: Classic Trilogy/Original Trilogy
O-OT: Original Original Trilogy, the editions released in 1977, '80, and '83 respectively
SE: Special Edition, the version of the trilogy released in 1997 with changed scenes and effects
AE: Archival Edition, the rumored new version of the trilogy that may be released in the future
    PT: Prequel Trilogy
    EU: Expanded Universe
    GFFA: Galaxy Far, Far Away

They're the best rules ever.

If anything the index might not be perfect, but that's minor.

Go away, kid tongue
