Thats possible, i find Yoda's comments interesting considering that during the PT the Jedi's ability to use the force to see things has diminished due to the sith. Yet he seems to have watching Luke through the force from a different planet, while the sith are in control of the universe.

But perhaps Obi-wans skills and powers have deteriorated due to lack of action or practice.

That doesn't sound like something Obi-Wan would allow.

Well that and Vader can't get through his defenses so if Ben had really let his skills atrophy like that it makes the vaunted Dark Lord of the Sith unable to kill an old man who hadn't practiced in almost 20 years.

Then again, how did Obi-Wan practice? It's not like he had his own Magnaguards or anything...

...though there's always Hett tongue

I figure that Obi Wan hasn't used his powers at all since his escape from the purge.

I'm pretty sure he used the ole Jedi mind trick from time to time in the canteena. tongue

I doubt Obi-wan would have seen much action in the years following the Jedi purge. He may have killed a few sand people, but thats unlikely unless he was cornered by them.

He probably spent years learning from Qui Gon and Yoda. But i wouldnt imagine lightsaber skills were top of his priority list. He and Yoda would have accepted that it was not their destiny to destroy the Sith. Even if his skills were to slip a little over the years, he was still more than a match for most scumbag or sand person he would have come into contact with.

What was interesting in ANH was the fact Obi-wans lightsaber flickered a lot. Could this be connected with his own strength being weak?

It could be, but it's really just the special effects being less advanced.

And David Prowse being a horrid fencer. There's a reason he was replaced for the TESB and ROTJ duels: he sucks. tongue

interestingly enough, there was a theory that Obi-Wan's flickering lightsaber was linked to his power and/or concentration

Well, if that were true, why wasn't Luke's sabre flickering when he was getting pelted with random objects and generally badly owned in TESB? tongue

I'd like to repost this:

Obi-Wan is not 'weak' by any means in ANH. If anything, he's reached a high-water mark of fighting defensively (which has been declared his philosophy since AOTC or so); he has virtually no wasted moves, no flashy strikes-Vader [i]could not land a blow on Obi-Wan until he stopped fighting.[/]. And it's not for lack of trying; Vader tries to penetrate Obi-Wan's defense literally dozens of times in ANH. None of them work. Vader saying his powers are weak is Vader trying to find a hole in a defense he couldn't beat twenty years ago, and still can't.

Re the idea of Obi-Wan not using the Force in the time between ROTS and ANH:

I don't think it would have been possible for Obi-Wan to not use the Force in some way. Since infancy he's been trained to used it and wouldn't know how NOT to use the Force in his life. His senses are attuned to it in such a way that it would be impossible for him to disconnect it's influence.

Vader was just talking trash. Obi-wan and Vader were preety even with lightsaber. Obi-wan sacrificed himself to let Luke and the others escape. Someone might ask me "if they were even then wy did he sacrifice himself?" I think he sacrificed himself because there was not a lt of time to win so it was faster to sacrifice himself then to win. Another reason he sacrificed himself was to join with the force and help Luke which is a better way then if he was alive. Remember he was training for a while to become one with the force over the years when he was watching Luke. I think Obi-wan wanted Luke to beat Vader to complete his training.

If we look at the third draft of ANH, there is this:

LUKE
But you're still a powerful Jedi. You don't need my help.

BEN
A Jedi's power is measured by the amount of the Force that is stored within him, and I have little of the Force left in me.

Admittedly, this is not supported by the theatrical version of ANH, but it might explain how Obi-Wan's supposed weakness originally made it into the story.
