When he is leaving Hoth, and also leaving Dagobah, why is Luke not traveling at lightspeed? Going from system to system, wouldn't it take A VERY LONG TIME only traveling sublight?
We all know he was in a hurry leaving Dagobah, so why was he only going sublight?
Is this a technical issue with ILM, or is there a nice Star Wars answer someone has?

Luke does use his hyperdrive, he has to fly some distance away from Hoth first before he can escape from the planets gravitational pull and actually be able to make the jump to light speed (Hyperspace),i guess he does it off screen after the scene with him cuts away to the star destroyers, and he has probably already left hyperspace when we see him in orbit over Dagobah as well, he is most likely circling to find a place to land and also scanning the surface for a city which Artoo doesnt detect.
The only complaint i have is that Luke avoided the Star Destroyers when he left Hoth, they should have detected him while he flew away from the planet but they never did, not a realistic attack force, they would have encircled the planet from different points and chased after any fighters or transpots trying to take the back path away from all of the battleships in the main area, bad directing there.

Luke did go to hyperspace; it just happened off-screen every time.

Why not show a scene of that then? They did it with the falcon.

because the X-Wing flying at sublight all across the screen makes for a more interesting shot to wipe-cut to another scene from

Showing the ships go into hyperspace every time would be pointless.
In fact, every movie of the OT has at least one hyperspace jump that isn't shown on screen:
ANH: Falcon leaving the Death Star to go to Yavin.
ESB: Luke going to Dagobah and then to Bespin. Also Slave I and Executor going to Bespin.
ROTJ: Luke and the Falcon leaving Tatooine.

I agree with the above “Showing the ships go into hyperspace every time would be pointless.” There are many things that happen off screen that we just don’t need to think about because they are not important to the plot.

Between ANH and ESB we actually only see two scenes of ships jumping to hyperspace. The first time, when the Falcon jumps from Tatooine to Alderaan, introduces us to what it looks like. The second one however, doesn't occur until the very end of ESB when R2-D2 finally fixes the darn thing and allows the Falcon to escape. If we had seen Luke firing his hyperdrive each time he traveled somewhere I think it would've taken away from that final escaping scene.

I was under the impression Slave I followed the Falcon to Bespin at sublight the whole way, otherwise Fett would have been detected by the Falcon.

but how would he alert the Empire of the Falcon's destination, then? Remember, the Empire was already there when Han&Co arrived.

I'm sure he could have contacted Vader from Slave I.
