So what's with the shield blasts all around them? And why did it's armour suddenly "break" when it fell?

The bursts around the walker were tiny bits of armor being burned off. If the Rebels shot at one long enough, the armor would have like be pierced. It would just take a long time (see the Shadows of the Empire game for N64).

As for why the walker was suddenly vulnerable after it fell, there's a couple reasons:

1) The snowspeeders couldn't shoot that spot from the correct angle while it was upright.
2) The impact with the ground could have weakened several spots of its armor.

Actually they hit the weak spot in the walker's "neck". That's what made it explode.

So, when the Millennium Falcon is being bombarded by TIE fighters and Star Destroyers, the brilliant flashes we're seeing are actually little bits of its hull come off? And Luke's snowspeeder is "shedding" metal all over the place as the AT-ATs are firing at them? It doesn't make any sense. You'll also notice that a snowspeeder fires directly into the viewport of Veers' walker, no effect. Please don't tell me they have "laserproof glass". As for the weak neck, why wouldn't the speeders just divebomb straight down and pulverize the neck?

The Falcon has shields. Those bursts of light we see are the shields taking damage.

Walkers and snowspeeders have no shields. Therefore, the bursts of light are bits of hull getting burned off.

And yes, the walkers have laserproof glass. It's called transparisteel, and although it's transparent, it has the same physical properties as the rest of the walker's armor.

The snowspeeders couldn't hit that spot on the walker while it was upright because the head and the body protected it. When it fell, the walker's head was tilted and exposed the weak spot.

lol, when it toppled forward, less of it's neck would be exposed to fire from above. Tilt your head all the way back, feel the back of your neck, and you'll see what I'm talking about. As for the shields, the flashes look exactly like the Falcon's deflectors. The snowspeeders are coming straight at the walkers, and you can clearly see the flashes around the ship as the forward deflectors do what they can against the AT-ATs guns (which isn't much). You can also see flashes around the Rebel turrets, meaning that they have smaller shields, also. Either that, or the AT-AT is just hitting lots of small insects in the atmosphere.

As for the transparisteel... I think I'm gonna be sick.

No shields. The neck area is exposed after toppling, allowing the speeders to score a hit.

There are no shields. The tow cables would have bounced off the shields and they wouldn't have been able to topple them.

Transparisteel is a well-established material in Star Wars. It's been used throughout the movies and the EU.

Probably the best argument, right there. The tow cables are, small and quick and if the Walker had shields, they would be useless.

As far as neck exposure goes, yes, less area is exposed. But, after falling the area that is exposed is accesible being shot. When its standing, you can't get a clear shot, laying down, you have a smaller target, but you have a shot at the target.

Yep. Another problem is AT-ATs supposedly are vulnerable to missiles, especially around the underbelly. That's why they're usually flanked by AT-STs, which are smaller and more maneuverable and hence able to protect the AT-ATs. If they had shields, the AT-STs wouldn't be needed.

I was always under the impression that they didn't have shields because Lukes says "armor" and that the grapling guns and Luke's saber had no trouble connecting with the walker. Really watching it, there aren't any obvious indications of shields. Some here say that the flashes from the blasters are the shields, but they are most likely just the blasts contacting with the armor. Why are there no signs of damage? Either the armor is really strong (Luke says "Too strong for blasters.") or the people making the movie didn't didn't pay enough attention to detail.

Why does the walker blow up so easily? I always wondered, but I guess I'll buy the neck explaination for an "In movie" explanation. But seriously, I think this was just a segment that was overdone by the director. It seems unlikely that the walker would blow up like that with just a couple shots from a small speeder (even if the neck is weak). The same mistake was also made in ROTJ with the small walker that blew up just from hitting the ground. Again, this was overdone and not necessary.

So, I say that walkers don't have shields and the reason why the speeder was able to destroy the walker was simply not explained very well on screen (relunctantly going to the EU.) Even if it did have shields that went down, there is no explaination why it blew up so easily. Most likey the director just wanted an explosion even if it didn't make much sense.

Furthermore, keep in mind that blasters (on the speeder) are weaker than lasers that are found on an X-Wing etc.

I hate the old "weak spot in the neck" thing that always come sup. That just sounds lie an attempt to insert the Atari 2600 game into the picture. As someone said above the thing fell and was weakened as a result.

So why didn't Luke and Wedge use their X-Wings (4 laser cannons and 2 proton torpedoes PLUS DEFLECTOR SHIELDS)???
They could have stopped the Imperial assault dead in its tracks several times over. I also love how Rouge Group keeps
attacking the Walkers head on, where their ONLY defensive armament is located (maybe the walkers front viewport is open
for some country air conditioning after all).
