But then, there aren't any ground vehicles that can take that sort of punishment, probably.
Yeah....well, this is why I think there shouldn't realistically be any ground combat vehicles heavier than a Gian Speeder ^^
17 kilometers is nice I suppose, but a few gunships or troop transports could strike a target with greater ease. Even assuming decent surface-to-air defenses, that's still less risk than having your walkers get bombed from the air. By the time we get to the New Republic era, we're looking at V-wings which are even faster, more maneuverable and are purpose built with semi-moderate weapon payloads in mind.

It's not just a matter of walking vs. repulsorlift vehicles. Gravitation fluctuations are no excuse for putting legs on a vehicle over treads, like a modern day tank. Treads would allow for greater speed, greater stability (e.g. it can't be tripped, and allow for the vehicle to roll right on over some pretty unsteady terrain.
In the Star Wars Tech program, the design of the AT-AT is criticized for not being practical, with legs offering no advantages in an open environment. However, it is stated that the AT-ST as seen in ROTJ is more practical, as it is deployed in a heavily forested environment and the added agility of having legs would allow the vehicle to step around trees.

The AT-AT's main advantage was that it inspired fear in enemy troops. They were quite intimidating.

I'm not a fan of the (happily entirely EU-based) "weaknesses" of repulsors.
If they only work well under certain conditions...then why the hell does the entire galaxy use them? We see repulsors EVERYWHERE, with the sole exception of Mustafar, and there's a fair number of vehicles that use only repulsors-speeder bikes, snowspeeders, Zam Wessel's speeder, Count Dooku's ship, all of the Trade Federation vehicles, all of the Naboo vehicles..
*deep breath*
Anyway, I still don't think AT-ATs are terribly badly designed; 1) no ground vehicle can absorb damage from proton torpedos 2) it has exceptionally long-range firepower and 3) proper deployment & tactics can make up for it's weaknesses.

We do? I barely remember any vehicles on Mustafar, besides those giant walking fleas

I wouldn't call those vehicles, really. Well, the one Obi-Wan was on..maybe. it's like calling a pool float a vehicle
Either way, it just serves to sink that stupid notion that much further.

Proton torpedos were used against the AT-AT's on the battle of Hoth? Not sure about that one...

They were used in the novel Isard's Revenge. The X-wings were much more effective than the snowspeeders.

The way I understand it, from a realistic perspective, the AT-ATs would have to have magnetic or plasma shielding of some sort. My understanding is that the blasters of the Star Wars universe are essentially particle beam weapons. As the particles are free and of like charge, there is nothing holding the particles together (as would be the case with a bullet) Thus, the particles fired at such a high speed would be able ti disrupt the molecular makeup of anything it comes into contact with, and transfer heat deep within the object... including metals. So, the laws of physics (as we know them) applying, no amount of armor could ever make a vehicle "too strong for blasters" a blaster pistol would be just as capable of this as a turbolaser, though the resulting damage would be less as fewer particles are fired. Only magnetic shielding, or a cool plasma shield could protect the AT-AT by altering the trajectory of incoming plasma particles.
Granted, this is a "Galaxy Far, Far Away" so, some suspension of belief may be required, as different metals with different properties could be used in the construction of armor.

In the Incredible Cross Sections I don't remember there be anything talking about them having shield generators, so they probably just have armor.
