Sure ROTJ and ROTS and the rest of the SAGA have great space battles among other films such as The Last Starfighter, Enemy Mine, etc.... and then there are great ariel battle from all the war movies in film history, but IMO ANH tops them all.
First off it's was made in 1977, actually earlier. No cable, no internet, no cgi, no vcrs, no dvds, no playstations, no x-box 360s. Sure it had a slight revamp w/the SE version but it is still amazing.
To this day there has never been a space or ariel battle scene to come close. As an 8 year old kid in 1977 watching it for the first time on the big screen I freaking crapped my pants seeing 30 X-wings and Y-wings descending on the DS. Han Solo's heroic save as Luke torpedoes the DS w/the dramatic music in the background. Tarkin's defiant arrogance in the Empires ultimate weapon, and the use of the Force denoting machinery's power of the human spirit is hard to beat.

For effects, of course not.
For suspense, excitement, thrills-empowered by an un-matched score, and ultimate story-bases climax which for 30 years I still haven't tired of, without a doubt.
Nothing, I mean NOTHING in the prequels even resembled anything like that SW moment. I prefer Empire as a film - but THat's my favourite SW moment ever.
From when it's just Luke, Biggs and Wedge left to their cheerful reunion on Yavin-4 - THIS IS Star Wars for me.

actually, the RotJ space battle is just as great and has a few plus points, if a little less suspense, but it's kinda overshadowed by the Throne Room scene and interrupted by the ground battle. That, and Battle of Endor I is a better music track than Battle of Yavin.
The beginning of RotS only happens to be a space battle and is deliberately put largely into the background, so with a completely different focus it's automatically got a much lower chance of winning best space battle in SW, though it's still my favorite opening of a movie ever.

RoTJ - DS2 space battle takes 1st prize in cinema's 'best space battle' category.

I definitely prefer the Trench Run to the space battle over Endor.

I think the battle on Endor and the Luke/Vader/Palpatine confrontation help to make the space battle of ROTJ all the sweeter.

Oh, if we're including the duel in the Throne Room, Jedi's all the way.

Funny - I don't remember any space battles happening in the throne room.
Throne Room duel =/= Space Battle.
The Jedi Space battle had more going on, more people involved, better effects, yes.
But... our attention isn't split 3 ways in ANH. Plus by ROTJ - We've already seen a Death Star get blown up.
Also, take into account... Luke using the force for the first time - the only one left - vader on his tail - R2 taking a hit - Yavin (with Leia and the rest of the rebels) about to be blown up - Obi Wan's "Use the Force Luke" - Han changing his mind and returning... these are iconic moments of which the saga was built upon. Nothing in any of the films touched it emotionally, save for the "No, I am your father" part in ESB. ROTJ's 'wow' moment was when Darth turns from the dark side and destroys the Emperor.
Jedi's space battle was a wonderful achievement - but it was totally over-shadowed by the Throne Room, and it certainly wasn't iconic like the Trench Run.

I don't think it is.
Funny thing is ... all the Sith/Jedi stuff and bringing the force into 'balance' that occurred in the Throne Room seems minor because Wedge and Lando blew up the DS2.

I think the ANH battle is much better. becous you realy get a sense your ther with red squadron. the bigger the battle is the less personal it gets and ROTJ is just to big! and ROTS
just has too many details witch i also love i just love going over it frame by frame and spotting every detail but in ANH is just the right amount of deteil VS drama and our personal intrest in the outcome.
i love how we know evry one in the battle when they check in, i love how the get fewer and fewer towords the and. i love that i feel bad for everyone of the that gets shot down.
i just love it!!!

I love the irony that we don't get to know the only Y-Wing pilot who survives, Keyan Farlander

The ROTJ space battle is the least important (and therefore least dramatic) sequence events that we're focusing on at that point of the film. The throne room duel and the struggle on the Endor moon are far more compelling because they involve the most important characters of the trilogy--Luke, Vader, Leia, Han, etc. The space battle is pretty to look at and exciting, sure, but you're nowhere near as invested in it as you are in the ANH assault.

I have to vote for ANH on this one. The emotional appeal is what clinches it for me. In particular, the sight of Han Solo diving out of the sun (yes, I know it is not THE sun, but that is how the shot is set up) like a WWII dogfighter still gets me everytime I watch it.

I agree that the climax in ANH is the best of the bunch. In ROTJ, we have two climaxes happening at once: the Death Star run and Luke confronting the Emperor.
ANH has the trench run and that's it. I think it focuses all your emotional tension in one place.
Luke has one chance to make the torpedo hit the mark and what does he do? Shuts off the targeting computer! He trusts in the Force, something he barely even understands at this point. I think that really pushes the tension.

That was the driving theme in the OT. The human spirit overcoming technoligical dominace. Or at least that's what GL said in the documentary From SW to Jedi. I still love all the space battles in SW Saga and space battles in other movies as well, but it amazes me that 30 years have gone by and ANH's space battle still reigns supreme.

Exactly. Luke had faith. This is after he's lost R2, after he's the last rebel left fighting, he's in Vader's scope - then his friend changes his mind and comes back to save him!
AFter 30 years of watching all 6 episodes countless times, I thin kthe whole heart of the Saga can be summed up right there - in the Trench Run climax.
