Yeah, I agree the Battle of Yavin was sweet.
The Battle of Endor had the potential to outdo it if we didn't have those dual storylines going at the same time with all those stupid bears, the new re re re re re re release of Return of Jedi should scrap that and add another 20 minutes to the space battle. Rock on Lucas.

I think that if the Endor space battle hadn't been broken up by the ground battle and the lightsaber battle, it would have become too overwhelming. It's the single most action filled sequence I've ever seen, even beating out Temple Of Doom's mine cart chase.

Please don't try and "sell" SW importance/nostalgia to all us SW fans.
IN CINEMA HISTORY is the debate.
Hi, I'm under 25 and think the Battle of Yavin is the best space sequence in the Saga.

I agree. It was very technogically advanced for its time and its definitely one of the greatest and most iconic scenes in movie history.

Vortigern99 posted: RamRed, you owe it to yourself to take a closer look at the battle. You may note the fluid movement of each individual shot, and how it's all cut together very precisely and with an eye toward total clarity of narrative. Or note how the stakes are raised every couple of minutes or less, with the Rebel ships being destroyed one by one until it's down to Luke and Biggs, before the DS gets Yavin in its sights, R2 is shot, Biggs is killed, Luke turns off his computer, the superlaser sequence starts... and then Han rides out of the sun and Luke fires an ace in the hole. It's action filmmaking at its absolute best. There was a reason audiences cheered in the theaters in 1977!
Alright, granted the sequencing is excellent. However..like for some of you, how 'perfect and shiny' everything is with the PT? I can't get over the datedness of the OT in some areas. But meh, who'm I kidding? I watch em all and enjoy them all, just somethings bug me with each, but that's neither here nor there, I simply disagree with the OP, I think the opening battle of RotS is better, along with the RotJ space battle. But then I'm in the category that ANH is 'meh' for the most part, unless it's Vader throwing people against walls, force choking them, killing Obi-Wan Kenobi, interrogating his own daughter, getting ready to blast his own son out of space...Vader all the way

It's odd, we disagree on the 'mehness', but I totally agree Vader is the proverbial business in 'ANH'.

No cable, no internet, no cgi, no vcrs, no dvds, no playstations, no x-box 360s.
All of these essential in creating your modern day super-awesome cinematic space battle.
Except the CGI of course, that's just superflous...
I mentioned all of those not only because I grew up in that time but I believe it has true relevance. Having no cable, internet, vcrs, dvds, playstations, and x-boxs didn't desensitize us visually which made the vfx in ANH even more amazing considering the era it was made.

The Battle of Yavin is a fight for the whole of humanity, and the world is basically on Luke's shoulders.
Humanity? Isn't it the domination of humanity that is oppressing the galaxy during this period in the first place.

It still reminds me of a second-rate WWII movie. And I was one of the few who didn't cheer. I just watched.

Not really. That's a subtext that got added on in the sequels/EU.
Sure, the Empire is all-human, but in Star Wars so is the Rebel Alliance. Within the context of this one film, it's easy to suppose that the aliens we see in Mos Eisley are from outside the Empire or the "human" section of the galaxy, the way a country on Earth might have a seaport full of shady foreigners during a civil war.

What is it about humans that they have to put themselves on a **** pedestal? Especially in science-fiction and fantasy stories?
As for the Battle of Yavin being a battle for humanity, who gives a ****? It bored the hell out of me. And I still consider it nothing more than a space-age version of a "B" war film.

The fight in "Jedi" put's all the other ones to shame. I likes the fight in TPM but, felt it lacked that something to push it over the top. ANH however is miles better than the battle of Hoth.

Part of its greatness is its short length, I think. The timer countdown works flawlessly here. You know that the conclusion is coming, and it can't possibly be very far away.
From the initial diving-into-the-trench shot to the DS1 exploding, this scene just doens't let up once. That's where its strength is. We go from "holy jeez, that thing is enormous" to "LUKE *** ARE YOU DOING TURNING OFF YOUR COMPUTER!!" in ten minutes or so.
