Why does Vader yell in pain?

During the Luke/Vader figth in ESB Luke hit's the top part of Vader's arm, or maybe the side of this shoulder. Vader gives out a little pain yell like it hurt. Isn't this his fake arm? I guess Luke's fake hand has feelings in it but it didn't hurt him much when it was SHOT in jedi. However he did react to the needle in ESB. As of Vader, does he have feeling in that arm? Also maybe Luke hit above the cut and hit his real arm. Also the laser didn't cut the Vader suit so could it have hurt that bad?

Vader's arms were cut off right below the elbow. He just has mechanical forearms and hands. The entire arm(s) is not mechanical.

The impact may have been enough to bruise him, which could lead to a grunt. It may also have been surprise that Luke got a shot in. I always thought that it should have left a gash in the armor as well, but it didn't seem to. His suit must be made of Lightsaber resistant material. (Forgot what it's called.)

Vader's shoulders are flesh and blood, not mechanical.

Cortosis Now that would just be sensible wouldn't it? Sure, it'd make him over-confident, but he'd strut like the man!

I always believed it was because the mechanical arm was connected to nerve endings.

As one person pointed out, Anakin's right arm (the arm in which he gets tagged by Luke) is flesh from the elbow up. It's gonna hurt like all kriff. His left arm..well he was shall we say..relieved..of it by one Obi-Wan Kenobi. Along with his legs from the knees down

Remember his nerves are connected to the mechanical arm so he can use them. Slashing it off could have the same effect sent through his nerves that the cleaving of his real arm could.

I see it as a story element to show that Vader is not untouchable. He is flesh and blood and can be injured. How lame would it have been if Luke tagged him on the shoulder and Vader DIDN’T groan in pain?

The Shadows of the Empire comic and novel has him contemplating that his arm has healed well after his duel with Luke - so I'm assuming he's flesh and blood. As several persons have mentioned, that part of his arm would still have been whole.
Of course, there is the fact the his whole arm gets cut of in Splinter of the Mind's Eye, but that was a weird novel...

Hmmmm...Vader is flesh & blood fromm elbows on up.
In ESB, Luke tagged his shoulder. I'm sure thats not Cortosis armor. (after spending all that money on the First Death Star, there were budget cuts.
But in ROTJ, his yell doesn't make sense. I don't think it was the fall. The cut was near the wrist area. And the prothetics go beyond that point.

Recall the final scene of ESB when Luke is getting fitted with his mechanical hand. The droid pokes him on the palm and says "Ow".

True. But were Vader's prosthetics of the same quality?

Like I had said before, your nerves would be connected to it to use it just by thought. If it was severed, it would send pain up your arm just as if a real arm was cut off. He was not flesh elbows up, more like shoulder on one side, elbow on the other.

Vader's prosthetics must have some sort of feeling in them, otherwise they'd be fairly useless.
But the point is moot, since Vader's shoulder is not mechanical.
