That's true but the real question is: How would Will Smith from Independence Day flying one of the alien ships hold up against these guys, and would the blast from the death star be strong enough to pierce the seemingly indestructable shield. These are the questions that keep me up at night.

All that would be required is Tom Cruise from Top Gun to fly into the weapon - and he is the best of the best! The top 1%!!!

But what would've happened if Cougar didn't turn in his wings which led to Maverick getting a shot at top gun?

Goose would probably still be alive! Ahhh fate, she be a fickle mistress.
Cougar and IceMan would've gotten along famously and would've formed a formidable team.

Oh yeah, my bad. Kinda got carried away back there.
I'm going to go with Luke and Wedge for running through Beggars Canyon, and of course the infamous "I used to bullseye womprats with my T-16 back home." line.

The best pilots of the OT would probaly be:
Luke, Wedge and Han
(If there was a fourth choice, Vader would get that spot)

I'll go with Vader, Luke and Han, in that order.
Though it might be a bit unfair to compare Force sensitives with non-Force users.
So, leaving out the Skywalkers, my list would be as follows: Han, Wedge, Baron Fel.

Oh, all right... I'm board jumping, never quite know if I'm lurking in lit or somewhere else.
But... we've got Han and Wedge and I don't like Lando (uh, what's that got to do with his skills as a pilot you might ask... A very sensible question which I will pointedly ignore) and who else is there? I don't actually know which of the Rogue guys are in the movies (so you can actually point at a fighter and say "oh, that's him")...

Despite Tycho being the second (?) A-Wing flying into the 2nd Death Star, I can't make an argument for his CT-greatness, even though I'm one of the few in this thread who make the distinction between "being a good pilot" and "having a fancy flight sequence"
After all, I'm not a dirty purist, and everything always says Vader and Luke were/are the best thing in a cockpit ever, followed by people like Wedge, the Fels, Jaina and that one guy in the one shot to the right, yeah, that one

Not counting any EU material
1. Han
His flying in ESB demonstrated that he not only had the coordination, but also the intelligence to improvise, and the ability to do it under pressure. Han didn't just outfly the Imperials: he out-thought them.
2. Luke
Considering he wasn't relying much on the Force yet at the Death Star I (aside from the proton torpedo shot) and he'd never piloted in space, the fact that he walked away from that battle shows he had some great natural talent. He handled himself well at Hoth as well.
3. Wedge
We don't see Wedge do a lot of obvious fancy flying, and at first I wasn't going to include him. But then I realized that he was pretty much a full time fighter pilot (unlike Luke, Han, Lando, Vader) during the OT, and not only survived the battles we saw on screen, but numerous ones we didn't see.
I didn't include Vader because, while he may have had a great reputation, what I saw on screen didn't cut it. Yes he vaped lots of rebels at DS I, but he also allowed himself to be pounced on by Han - a skilled Force-using pilot like Vader (who also had two wingmen) shouldn't have let that happen. He may have been great back in the day, but not so much later.

My first pick would have to be Wedge, because he is the only character in the OT to fly in all major engagements (Yavin IV, Hoth, and Endor) and not get shot down. All that, and he's an established non-Force user. As Lord Vader once said, "Impressive. Most impressive."
My second pick would be a two-some. Han AND Chewie. They flew a light frieghter like it was a fighter and got out of everything they got themselves into (including, the Death Star). Lando was the best choice to fly in in the Battle of Endor (after General Solo and Chewie, but they were on the ground) because just how many of the modifications did he do, after all? Also, he knew that ship pretty well since he was instuctued by Chewie for the year between Empire and Jedi on just what she's (Falcon) is now capable of.
I guess my third choice would be that TIE Pilow whose ship was destroyed right before the Falcon made it out of the second Death Star. Think about it, here was a nobody that didn't survive his joyride into the Death Star because his fighter wasn't fast enough. He was skilled, but killed by substandard equipment.
